Downey, Jr. plays the role of Peter, who is trying to get home to his wife in Los Angeles who is due to give birth to their son. Everything is going fine for him until he gets shot in the arm, is forced off the plane and put on the no fly list. This forces him Peter to drive across the country with Ethan.

Robert Downey, Jr. has starred in numerous other films throughout his career including; "Weird Science" (1985), "Iron Man" (2008) and "Sherlock Holmes" (2009). His performance in "Sherlock Holmes" (2009) earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.

Peter leaves a message on his wife's phone about a dream he has where they are in the woods having their baby and a bear comes and cuts the umbilical cord.

Ethan reveals that he keeps the ashes in a coffee container because the label states that it is vacuumed sealed. This turns out to be disastrous when Peter's friend unknowingly uses the ashes to make coffee.

Peter asks his wife to transfer money to Ethan Tremblay as he believes he left his wallet with his identification on the plane. Peter's wife wires the money. However, when Ethan shows his identification to the teller, it states that his name is Ethan Chase. Ethan reveals that this is real surname and he made the name Tremblay up as a stage name.

Ethan is affected by drugs and believes that he is approaching a petrol station when in fact he is approaching the Mexico border. The pair are asked to step out of the car and Ethan flees while Peter is interrogated by Mexican police. Ethan steals a police car and comes back for Peter. The pair then use this vehicle to complete their journey to Los Angeles.

Peter has to convince a rather reluctant Ethan to let go of his father's ashes. Also while at the Grand Canyon, Ethan reveals to Peter that he has had his wallet all along. This causes the boys to start fighting until Peter gets a phone call from his wife telling him that she has gone into labor early. This causes them to drive hurriedly to Los Angeles.

Ethan finds a gun in the truck that he stole from the Mexican police. Without realising the gun is loaded, he shoots Peter in his side. Peter is in such a hurry to reach his wife that he refuses to stop for medical assistance.

After Peter wakes up from fainting due to his gunshot wound, Ethan announces to Peter that he has a daughter named Rosie. Ethan also reveals that he cut the umbilical cord. Peter relates this to the dream that he had at the start of the film where he saw a bear cut the cord. Peter assumes that this is a positive sign.
