Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two "Dr. Who" films were made in the 1960s. Who played the Doctor in both of them?

Answer: Peter Cushing

As played by Peter Cushing, the Doctor is an Earth based scientist and inventor whose surname is actually Who, rather than a time travelling Time Lord. He has invented TARDIS, as opposed to The Tardis, and although it is still bigger on the inside than the outside, inside is all wires, lights, switches and equipment rather than a space with a central console.

Peter Cushing had a long acting career, but will probably be best remembered for his appearances as vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing, opposite Christopher Lee as Dracula, in a series of films made by Hammer House of Horror. He also played Baron Frankenstein in Hammer's first colour horror film, which led to several sequels. Away from Hammer Horror films he appeared as Sherlock Holmes in the 1959 film, "The Hound of The Baskervilles", and, in 1977, as Grand Moff Tarkin in "Star Wars".
2. On which planet does much of the action in "Dr. Who and the Daleks" take place?

Answer: It is not named

The home planet of the Daleks is not named in this film, although in the sequel it is named as Skaro. When the Doctor and his companions arrive on the planet it is clear it has been devastated by nuclear war. Radiation has deformed the Daleks and forced them to retreat into their city and live inside machines.
3. Who are the race that share the home planet with the Daleks?

Answer: Thals

Thals are a humanoid like race. They survived the nuclear fallout because they had access to anti radiation drugs, and they have evolved into a peaceful, agricultural, people. The Daleks are determined to find a way to wipe them out.
4. In "Dr. Who and the Daleks" who plays the boyfriend of Dr. Who's granddaughter?

Answer: Roy Castle

In the film Roy Castle's character, Ian Chesterton, is comic relief. This is in contrast to the first television series, in which Ian Chesterton also appeared, where he was a more heroic character.

Roy Castle was an all round entertainer, best known for his television work. However, he made several films including "Carry On Up The Khyber" (1968), "Dr. Terrors House of Horrors" (1965), which also starred Peter Cushing, and "The Beast Must Die" (1974), again with Peter Cushing.
5. Who played Dr. Who's granddaughter, Susan, in both "Dr. Who and the Daleks", and "Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150 AD"?

Answer: Roberta Tovey

This is probably one of Roberta Tovey's better known roles. She also appeared as "Samantha" in the television series "My Husband and I", and as Anne in four episodes of "Black Arrow". She has had minor roles in several television series including "The Two Ronnies" and "Casualty".
6. In "Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150 AD", Bernard Cribbins plays Tom Campbell. What is he working as when he meets Dr. Who?

Answer: A Special Constable

Bernard Cribbens is patrolling as a Special Constable when he sees a jewellery store robbery. He is knocked down by the get away car, and when he gets up staggers to what he thinks is a Police phone box, but it is actually TARDIS.

Bernard Cribbens later appeared in the television series "Dr. Who" with David Tennant.
7. In "Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150 AD", what are the Daleks planning to replace the Earth's core with?

Answer: A gigantic motor

The Daleks intend to remove the core from Earth and replace it with a massive motor. This will enable them to move Earth and steer it to their own home planet. They can then use Earth to live on instead of being forced to live in one city on their own ruined planet.
8. "Robomen" are Dalek slaves. What race were they before becoming slaves?

Answer: Human

In "Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150 AD", the Daleks have brainwashed some humans and turned them into slaves called "Robomen". Only those whom the Daleks consider the most intelligent are selected for this process. All other captured humans are set to work in the Dalek mine in Earth's core.
9. Two men provided the voices of the Daleks in both "Dr. Who and the Daleks" and "Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150 AD". Who were they?

Answer: Peter Hawkins and David Graham

Neither man was shown in the credits of "Dr. Who and the Daleks", and it was only when "Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150 AD" came out and they were given credit that it emerged they also provided the voices in the first film.

Peter Hawkins was a voice actor who worked primarily in television. His only film, other than the two "Dr. Who" films, was "The Four Corners of Nowhere" made in 1995. In television however his work was prolific. He provided all the voices for "Captain Pugwash" as well being the original voice of Zippy on "Rainbow".

David Graham is also a voice actor. providing the voices of Brains and Gordon Tracy in the "Thunderbirds" films. In the 1984 commercial that introduced the Apple Macintosh computer he was the voice of Big Brother.
10. In "Dr. Who an the Daleks", Dr. Who fakes a malfunction in which part of TARDIS to stop them returning to London?

Answer: Fluid Link

His companions all want to make an immediate return to London, but Dr. Who wants to investigate the planet and the city and fakes a leak in the fluid systems. This forces the party to set off for the Dalek city to see if they can get mercury to re-fill the link.
