Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "And just where, my dear Pluskat, are these ships heading?" "Straight for me!" Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Longest Day

This movie uses an all-star cast and almost three hours of screen time to tell the story of the Normandy beach invasion on June 6, 1944 in World War II. In this scene German Major Werner Pluskat (Hans Christian Blech) has just spotted the Allied invasion fleet in the English Channel from his Atlantic Wall bunker and realizes the Normandy invasion is about to begin.

He is warning skeptical German Lt. Colonel Ocker (Peter van Eyck) by telephone, who calmly asks line one. An agitated Pluskat shouts back line two.

In the 1963 Academy Awards, "The Longest Day" won two Oscars and was nominated for three others, including Best Picture (but lost to "Lawrence of Arabia"). Former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower was willing to play himself in the film, but it was decided it would be too difficult for makeup artists to make him appear young enough to play his WWII self.

Instead, the part went to set designer Henry Grace. He had never acted in a movie before, but he had a remarkable resemblance to the young Ike. Comparing the Normandy invasion beach scenes in this movie and those in "Saving Private Ryan" shows how much censorship standards changed between 1962 and 1998 (their respective release dates).
2. "I just bought these shoes." "Shut up, Cosmo." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Fugitive

This 1993 movie is an expanded version of the 1963-1967 American TV series of the same name starring David Janssen as Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford's role in the movie). The story follows Dr. Kimble, a successful Chicago surgeon, who arrives home one evening to find his wife brutally attacked and dying and a one-armed man fleeing the scene. Kimble is wrongfully convicted of her murder and is on his way to jail when his bus is struck by a train (a great scene).

He escapes to a nearby hospital where he treats his own wounds, dresses in a doctor's smock and steals an ambulance.

He is chased by helicopters and patrol cars and is seemingly trapped in a tunnel in a dam, but escapes through the dam's wastewater tunnels. In this scene Deputy Marshal Cosmo Renfro (Joe Pantoliano) has to wade through ankle-deep water in new shoes and disgustedly says line one. Marshal Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones), intent on capturing Kimble, replies with line two.

In the 1994 Academy Awards Tommy Lee Jones won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. "The Fugitive" also was nominated for Best Picture but lost to "Schindler's List." In the train crash scene a real train was actually crashed.

There was only one chance to film this scene, but after extensive planning the scene went exactly as planned. The engine used was not destroyed.
3. "What happened to the warriors at Thermopylae?" "Dead to the last man." (Hint: Tom Cruise is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Last Samurai

In the events leading up to this scene, decorated army hero Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is hired in 1876 to train and modernize the Japanese army. However, while in Japan he comes to admire the fierce fighting spirit and sense of honor of samurai warriors, even though they only use swords and bows and arrows.

He develops a relationship with samurai leader Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) and tells him the story of how a small, vastly outnumbered army of Greeks held back a much larger Persian army for three days at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece.

In this scene just before the final climatic charge of the samurai army against the modern Japanese army, Katsumoto recalls this story and asks line one. Algren replies with line two. In the 2004 Academy Awards "The Last Samurai" was nominated for four awards but didn't win any.

The final climatic samurai charge is very reminiscent of the famous poem entitled "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson ("Into the valley of death rode the six hundred...").

This poem was about a suicidal charge by mounted British forces in the battle of Balaclava (Ukraine) in the Crimean War (1854-56).
4. "I'm not sure I agree with you a hundred percent on your police work there, Lou." "Yeah?" (Hint: Frances McDormand is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Fargo

In the events leading up to this scene, car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) engineers a kidnapping of his own wife, with the intent of solving his financial problems with the ransom money he expects will be paid by her wealthy father. However, persistent investigation by policewoman Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) starts to unravel his scheme.

In this scene Marge and policeman Lou (Bruce Bohne) are investigating the shooting death of a highway patrolman (who had been shot by the kidnappers).

When Marge asks Lou what the patrolman had written down in his citation book, Lou says the last entry was DLR. Lou assumes it was a partial license plate that started DLR___ and said he had the state checking their records. Marge looks at Lou and says line one. Lou looks surprised and says line two.

She thinks it was plates from a dealer (car sales lot). In the 1996 Academy Awards "Fargo" won two Oscars, including Frances McDormand for Best Actress in a Leading Role. It was also nominated for Best Picture, but lost to "The English Patient." This area of the U.S. was settled by many Swedish immigrants and this is reflected in character names and the frequent use of the word "Yeah."
5. "Mr. President! Wow! This is... what a pleasure. As you can imagine, they... they don't let us out much. "I can understand that." (Hint: Will Smith is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Independence Day

In the events leading up to this scene a large alien mother ship is detected moving towards the earth. It later launches smaller ships to earth, which hover over all major cities around the world and then unleash death rays which destroy earth's buildings.

In this scene the plane Air Force One carrying U.S. President Thomas Whitmore (Bill Pullman), his family, and a few close advisors had just escaped Washington, DC and has landed at the secret military base in Nevada called Area 51. President Whitmore is introduced to the chief scientist Dr. Brackish Okun (Brent Spiner), who gushes line one. President Whitmore, looking uncomfortable, replies with line two.

In the 1997 Academy Awards "Independence Day" won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and was nominated for Best Sound (but lost to "The English Patient"). Great comic relief is provided by crop duster pilot Russell Casse (Randy Quaid), who claims to have been abducted by aliens years before (his neighbors ask him if there were any "sexual experiments").

In the final climatic battle, when a computer virus has disabled the spaceships' defensive shield, Casse flies his plane inside the space ship while laughing, "Ha-ha-ha! Hello, boys! I'm back!"
6. "There was a moment when I used to blame everything and everyone for all the pain and suffering and vile things that happened to me, that I saw happen to my people. Used to blame everybody. Blamed white people, blamed society, blamed God. I didn't get no answers 'cause I was asking the wrong questions. You have to ask the right questions." "Like what?" (Hint: Edward Norton and Stacy Keach are in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: American History X

After white supremacist Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton) is sentenced to jail for killing several black men, he starts to rethink his life and how his little brother Danny (Edward Furlong) is being twisted like he was by local racist Cameron Alexander (Stacy Keach).

In this scene high school principle Dr. Bob Sweeney (Avery Brooks) visits Derek in the prison infirmary after some fellow inmates brutalized him. They start talking about the meaning of life and Sweeney says line one. Derek asks him line two and Sweeney answers, "Has anything you've done made your life better?" In the 1999 Academy Awards Edward Norton was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role but lost to Roberto Benigni in "La Vita è bella." In preparation for his role in "American History X," Edward Norton gained 30 pounds of muscle.
7. "Please inform these men that the mess hall is closed." "But sir, it's only a quarter 'til eight." (Hint: George C. Scott is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Patton

This movie follows extremely talented but very complex American General George S. Patton, Jr. (George C. Scott) through his WWII days. He was a brilliant tank tactician at the leading edge of tank strategy but identified with the ancient past ("God, how I hate the twentieth century").

He was very religious but swore a blue streak. In his younger days (at age 26) Patton represented the US at the 1912 Olympic games in Stockholm by competing in the Modern Pentathlon (he finished fifth). In this scene Gen. Patton has just assumed command of the Western Task Force in North Africa in 1942 and is inspecting a mess hall.

The cook explains, "We're open from six to eight. Most of the men are just coming in now." A displeased Patton says line one. He hopes to infuse his green troops with some discipline.

The cook protests with line two. In the 1971 Academy Awards "Patton" won seven Oscars, including Best Picture. George C. Scott won the Oscar for Best Actor but refused to accept it, calling the competition a "meat parade" and stating that competition between actors was unfair. Scott initially turned down the role but then reconsidered when he realized it would be a great acting challenge. Nearly half the film's budget was spent on renting soldiers and equipment from the Spanish army.
8. "Mommy's very angry." "This is not hunting behavior, Ian. They're searching." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Lost World: Jurassic Park

This movie picks up four years after the disaster at Jurassic Park on Isla Nublar. Entrepreneur John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) reveals to Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) that there was another island ("Site B") on which dinosaurs were bred before being transported to Isla Nublar. Hammond assembles a team to visit and document the area before it is exploited by others.

Included in the four-person team are Dr. Malcolm and his girlfriend, Dr. Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore). In this scene a baby Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur with a broken leg has been carried back to the team's trailer so they can set it. Dr. Malcolm hears the adult T-Rexes bellow and says line one. Dr. Harding listens and responds with line two.

In the 1998 Academy Awards "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" was nominated for Best Visual Effects but was beaten out by "Titanic." This movie held the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for four and a half years, from May 1997 to November 2001 ($92 million).
9. "Seven weeks sailing, and he happens in darkness on our exact position." "Hmm. Well, the French have their spies in England and elsewhere. As do we." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

This movie is set in the early 1800s during the Napoleonic Wars. In the events leading up to this scene, Capt. Jack "Lucky Jack" Aubrey (Russell Crowe), commander of the British man-of-war HMS Surprise, opens orders while underway to sink or capture the French privateer Acheron, which has been deployed to the region.

In this scene Midshipman Hollom (Lee Ingleby) spots the Acheron in a fog bank after seven weeks of uneventful sailing and it opens fire on HMS Surprise. After Surprise manages to escape into a fog bank, Capt. Aubrey says line one to the ship's surgeon, Dr. Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany). Dr. Maturin replies with line two.

In the 2004 Academy Awards "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World " won two Oscars and was nominated in eight other categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King").

This is the first movie to include scenes filmed on the Galapagos Islands. Russell Crowe did most of his own violin playing in this movie.

He learned to play for the film (and said it was the hardest thing he'd ever done for a movie).
10. "Oh, I had some bets down for you. You saw some money." "You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am. Let's face it. It was you, Charley." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: On the Waterfront

In the events leading up to this scene boxer-turned-longshoreman Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) struggles to stand up to corrupt union bosses. Much of this movie was shot on location around the docks of Hoboken, New Jersey. In this scene in the back seat of a taxicab Terry realizes his brother Charley 'the Gent' Malloy (Rod Steiger) is the real cause of his lack of boxing success. Charley tries to blame it on Terry's manager but Terry says, "It wasn't him, Charley.

It was you. Remember that night in the Garden you came down to my dressing room and you said, "Kid, this ain't your night. We're going for the price on Wilson." You remember that? "This ain't your night." My night! I coulda taken Wilson apart! So what happens? He gets the title shot outdoors in the ballpark and what do I get? A one way ticket to Palookaville! You was my brother, Charley, you shoulda looked out for me a little bit. You shoulda taken care of me just a little bit so I wouldn't have to take them dives for the short-end money." Charley tries to protest with line one but Terry finally understands the situation and says line two.

In the 1955 Academy Awards "On the Waterfront" won eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Marlon Brando for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Actress (and future princess of Monaco) Grace Kelly turned down the role of Edie Doyle (the part played by Eva Marie Saint), deciding to make the 1954 movie "Rear Window" instead.
