Answer: Saving Private Ryan

In the events leading up to this scene a clerk, responsible for sending out death notification telegrams after the D-Day invasion in World War II, notices that one mother will get three telegrams at the same time, announcing three of her four sons have been killed. General Omar Bradley (Harve Presnell) decides the fourth son is to be pulled out of the fighting and Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) and a squad of soldiers are sent to try and locate him.

In this scene Captain Miller finds him and says, "James, I'm here to tell you your brothers were killed in combat.

They're dead." Private Ryan (Matt Damon) asks the question in the first line and Captain Miller replies with the second. In the 1999 Academy Awards "Saving Private Ryan" won five Oscars and was nominated for six more, including Best Picture. Best Picture that year was won by "Shakespeare in Love." This movie was based on the true story of the Niland brothers. One was killed on D-Day while in the 82nd Airborne, one was killed on Utah Beach with the 4th Infantry Division, and a third was reported killed that same week in Burma (but later turned up alive). Mrs. Niland received all three death notification telegrams on the same day.

The fourth son was serving with the 101st Airborne and was ordered pulled out of the front lines, but couldn't be found. He survived anyway.

Answer: Rain Man

In the events leading up to this scene, yuppie car salesman Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) picks up his autistic brother Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) from his institutional home in Cincinnati and starts driving them to Charlie's home in Los Angeles. Just after they pass Las Vegas, Charlie realizes Raymond's phenomenal memory would give them an edge playing the card game blackjack.

They pull a hasty U turn and head for a casino. In this scene Raymond is approached by a prostitute in the casino who asks Raymond the first line.

He replies with the off-the-wall comment in the second line. In the 1989 Academy Awards, "Rain Man" won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Dustin Hoffman. Dustin Hoffman was originally cast as Charlie, but after seeing a real autistic savant he switched it so he played Raymond.

Answer: The Color Purple

In the events leading up to this scene, Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) has endured years of physical and mental abuse by her husband Albert (Danny Glover). In this scene Celie finally has had enough and tells Albert she is leaving him and going to Memphis, Tennessee with houseguest Shug Avery (Margaret Avery) and her husband.

As they leave Celie says the first line and Albert runs after the car shouting the second. In the 1986 Academy Awards, "The Color Purple" was nominated for Oscars in 11 categories but didn't win any.

This movie was the film debut of TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey (she played Sofia).

Answer: The Italian Job

In the events leading up to this scene, a gang of thieves steals $35 million dollars worth of gold bars in Venice, Italy. However, one of the thieves double crosses his companions and keeps all the gold for himself. One year later, in Los Angeles, the surviving team members plan to get it back and get their revenge on the traitor.

In this scene Left Ear (Mos Def) is casing out the security features at the house of traitor Steve Frezelli (Edward Norton) when he spots two guard dogs. He then reports the first line by wireless telephone to team leader Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg) and Croker responds with the second line.

The high-speed boat chase in the canals of Venice won an award and the chases involving several Mini Coopers in Los Angeles should have (in my opinion).

Answer: Dog Day Afternoon

This movie is based on a true story of an attempted bank robbery in Brooklyn, New York in 1972, that degenerated into a media and neighborhood circus. In this scene would-be bank robber Sonny (Al Pacino) is talking by telephone to a TV anchorman, while the robbery is underway with his partner Sal (John Cazale).

The anchorman suggests the first line and Sonny replies with the second. In the 1976 Academy Awards, "Dog Day Afternoon" won one Oscar and was nominated for five others, including Best Picture. Best Picture that year was won by "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." The real character on which Sal was based was killed in the resulting standoff and the real Sonny was sentenced to 20 years in a federal penitentiary.

Answer: The Godfather: Part II

In this scene Corleone family buttonman, Willie Cicci (Joe Spinell), is testifying before a U.S. Senate committee investigating organized crime in America. Cicci admits he has killed people that the family wanted eliminated, but claims his orders never came directly from Don Michael Corleone (Al Pacino).

The questioning Senator (G.D. Spradlin) wants to know if a buffer was always involved. When Cicci expresses puzzlement at this term, the senator explains it with first line and Cicci responds with the second.

In the 1975 Academy Awards "The Godfather: Part II" won six Oscars, including Best Picture, and was nominated for five others. This was the first sequel to win Best Picture. This movie continues where the "The Godfather" left off, following the lives in a fictional American crime family.

However, many of the characters in this fictional story are based on people and incidents in real life.

Answer: Five Easy Pieces

In this scene Bobby Dupea (Jack Nicholson) is in a diner with some friends and is frustrated in placing his order. He orders a side of plain toast to go with his omelet but the waitress (Lorna Thayer) tells him there are no substitutions and no side orders.

He then orders a chicken salad sandwich but wants to hold everything except the toast. When the surprised waitress says line one, Bobby sarcastically says line two. "Five Easy Pieces" was nominated for four Oscars in the 1971 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

However, Best Picture that year was won by "Patton."

Answer: The Shining

In the events leading up to this scene, would-be writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) has been hired as the winter caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel, in the secluded mountains of Colorado, and moves his family there. In this scene delusional Jack meets butler Delbert Grady (Philip Stone) and is convinced he was an earlier caretaker who went berserk and killed his family.

In this scene Grady makes a suggestion with line one and Jack replies with line two. As Grady explains, "And when my wife tried to prevent me from doing my duty, I "corrected" her." In a famous scene from this movie Jack Torrance chops through a locked bathroom door to get at his terrified wife Wendy. Jack Nicholson improvised the line "Heerreee's Johnny!" in this scene.

The look in Nicholson's eyes is chilling. This movie is based on an early Stephen King novel and is one of my favorites.

Answer: Ghostbusters

In the events leading up to this scene, three professors, specializing in parapsychology, are thrown out of their college and decide to form a business named Ghostbusters, that specializes in ghost removal. In this scene Ghostbusters receptionist Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) is making small talk with Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) and says the first line.

He replies with the second. In the 1985 Academy Awards "Ghostbusters" was nominated for Best Visual Effects but was beaten out by "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." John Belushi was originally slated to play Dr. Peter Venkman in "Ghostbusters," but after his sudden death in 1982 Bill Murray was cast and the role was extensively rewritten.

The college scenes were filmed at Columbia University in New York City, but they agreed to this only on the condition the school not be mentioned by name in the film.

Answer: Jurassic Park

In the events leading up to this scene, entrepreneur John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) has learned how to extract DNA from the blood of prehistoric mosquitoes entombed in clumps of hardened amber and has successfully cloned dinosaurs from that. He plans to create a park and exhibit these creatures behind electrified fences to paying tourists. In this scene a T-rex dinosaur has broken out of its enclosure and has eaten a smaller dinosaur. Hammond downplays the significance of this and says line one to some visiting scientists. Visitor Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) responds with line two. (Note: Although Disneyland actually opened on July 17, 1955, Hammond says 1956.)

In the 1994 Academy Awards "Jurassic Park" won three Oscars, including Best Visual Effects. Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), the special effects company started by George Lucas in 1975, created the digital dinosaurs in the "Jurassic Park" movie and sequels. Some other hits that ILM has contributed to include all the "Star Wars" sequels and prequels, the "Indiana Jones" movies, the "Men In Black" movies, "Forrest Gump," "Twister," "The Perfect Storm," the "Mummy" movies, "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" and the "Harry Potter" films.
