How much do you know about Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban? | Quiz

I love the book and thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Here's my quiz about the movie and I hope you like it. Warning, though, there are some spoilers so perhaps it would be best to take the quiz only after you've watched the movie.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Aunt Marge do to get Harry's attention and as a prelude to ordering about like a servant?

Answer: she snaps her fingers and calls him "you"

Aunt Marge is worse than the Dursleys, always ordering Harry about and snapping her fingers then pointing to what she wants done as if he really were the lowest of servants.
2. What two magical things does Harry do that he can't control when Aunt Marge angers him?

Answer: explode her glass and inflate her

Who wouldn't get mad when Aunt Marge does nothing but insult Harry and then his parents? He totally loses it, though, when Aunt Marge insults his parents. This is dangerous for Harry because he's still an underage wizard and can't do magic outside of Hogwarts.

In the book, though, when Aunt Marge inflated, Harry quickly ran up to get his things but in the movie, he stayed until Aunt Marge flew out the open door.
3. What is the name of the hippogriff in Hagrid's class?

Answer: Buckbeak

In the book, there were actually a dozen hippogriffs, but in the movie they narrowed it down to one - Buckbeak, who played a bigger part than all the others. Also, in the book, Harry hated flying on a hippogriff, but in the movie, he loved it. It was a poignant moment in the movie when Harry was just free to be a kid as opposed to the other dark moments in the film.
4. Dudley Dursley is always pigging out, but what other activity was he doing during most of the time we see him on film?

Answer: watching tv

Other than always eating, we see Dudley keeping his eyes on the many tv sets that are scattered around the house. After all, in the third book, the Dursleys bought Dudley new tv sets as a welcome-back-home kind of thing so he wouldn't have to walk very far to watch tv (he kept complaining).

In the movie, it's really funny the way he is so ignorant of everything happening all around him and all he can see are his tv shows. He just stopped watching to see Aunt Marge blow up but then went back to concentrating on his show. Quite a mark of the subtle humor that the new director exhibits in the third movie.
5. What was the name of the violently purple triple-deck bus that picked up Harry?

Answer: Knight Bus

Isn't it a big thing in the wizarding world to not allow students to do magic when not in Hogwarts? Then I wonder why Harry was using his wand to light up so he can read his homeworks when we first see him when the movie first opens? He kept saying "lumos maxima" (or something like that) to make his wand light up and then extinguishes it when he hears Uncle Vernon going to his room to check on him. Hm... sorry, I tend to nitpick.
6. Where was Harry when the wizard's public bus picked him up?

Answer: beside a playground

You can clearly see this since the playground was focused on to give a feeling of eeriness - the swings and seesaws moving on their own and all. And then when Harry sees the big dog across the street and then trips, you can see the playground clearly behind him.
7. In the last scene, what gift does Harry receive anonymously (it doesn't mention who it came from)?

Answer: a Firebolt

Everybody who has read the book knows that he received a Firebolt from his godfather, Sirius Black. But in the movie, this is only hinted with a hippogriff feather included with the package. And Ron is never shown to receive Pig.
8. On the night the entire school slept in the Great Hall, what was the enchanted ceiling showing?

Answer: galaxies

That was weird, the ceiling of the Great Hall was enchanted to show and reflect the sky outside, but in the movie, it was showing galaxies and such. I doubt THAT can be seen in the night sky with the naked eye!
9. What is Harry's quidditch robe number?

Answer: 7

In the third movie, you'll notice the Quidditch players' uniform has changed slightly: they now wear goggles and have numbers and names printed on their back. Written on the back of Harry's scarlet robes are "Potter 7" in bright yellow. This is a first since they didn't have this in the first two movies nor was it written in the books. Also, I miss Sean Biggerstaff, who played Oliver Wood in the first two movies, he was so cute!
10. What do the Weasley twins give Harry that will play a big part in this movie and possibly the fourth movie since it also played a part in the fourth book?

Answer: Marauder's Map

In the movie, he sees Peter Pettigrew, who supposedly died, in the map and tries to find him but fails to do so because Peter is disguised as Scabbers. In the book, he never sees Peter's name. Also isn't it cool the way they depicted Marauder's Map? I loved it! Exactly how I imagined it to look like! Sadly, though, I wish they had shown the audience that Sirius, Remus, Peter, and James were all close friends when they were in Hogwarts. I guess the director and script writer were banking on the fact that majority of those who'll watch the movie has probably read the book and would know that fact even without being told.
11. How many times does Uncle Vernon check on Harry in the very beginning of the movie?

Answer: 2

Again, isn't Harry supposed to be unable to use magic outside of Hogwarts? But he lighted his wand to study, and then extinguished it when Uncle Vernon was nearing so he could lie down and pretend to sleep.
12. What was Harry mostly doing in the background when Hagrid is throwing rocks at the lake, depressed because his hippogriff has been sentenced to death?

Answer: sitting down on a rock

There was a blooper here, if you'll look closely. When the camera is in front, you'll notice that at the end of Hagrid's, erm, speech Harry stands up. But when the camera shoots from behind them, Harry is once again sitting down on the rock, as if he never moved at all.
13. Can Harry produce a corporeal Patronus?

Answer: yes

In the book, his properly-formed corporeal Patronus takes the form of a stag. In the movie, this is never shown, only that his patronus looks like a bright white shield that protects him from dementors. Beside the lake, though, before Harry passed out, he saw a bright white stag across the lake from him before it repelled the Dementors. Later, when Harry and Hermione used the Time Turner and Harry realized it was him who made the patronus and not his dad, there was no stag - just a really bright white shield that pulsated away from him, repelling the many Dementors in the area.
14. What was included in Harry's gift of a new broomstick?

Answer: a gray Hippogriff's feather

It's to signify that it came from Sirius since where else and who else does Harry know has a gray Hippogriff?
15. Who directed the movie?

Answer: Alfonso Cuaron

Chris Columbus directed the first two (which, sadly, disappointed me) and he also directed the "Home Alone" movies. Alfonso Cuaron directed the third (which exceeded my expectations) as well as directing many other films that centered on children growing up ("coming of age" is the used term), which is probably why he did such an excellent job on the third movie.
16. During most of the movie, where was Harry's scar located on his forehead (from his viewpoint)?

Answer: right

I'll be shocked if someone answered "he had a scar?"! It's mostly found on the right. Unfortunately, one of the biggest bloopers of the movie is that his scar kept jumping around. In one of the scenes, I swear it could be found on the left side of his forehead (it was a quick shot, hardly noticeable).
17. What happened to Harry's old broomstick, his Nimbus Two Thousand?

Answer: got blown into the Whomping Willow

Harry's broomstick got blown off course and flown into the Whomping Willow after Harry passed out from being attacked by so many Dementors. Lightning DID strike the broomstick tail of one of the chasers and it burst into flames, but that wasn't Harry.
18. What animagi does Sirius Black turn into?

Answer: dog

Remus Lupin is a werewolf and is not an animagus. However, his other friends are. Sirius Black, aka Padfoot, turns into a big black dog that "has a really sweet disposition" to the point that James Potter once commented that he should just be a dog all the time (Sirius says this in the movie). James Potter turns into a stag and is called Prongs by his friends. Peter Pettigrew, the traitor, is aptly a rat, is also called 'Wormtail'.
19. In chronological order, who were the ones who went through the passageway underneath Whomping Willow?

Answer: Sirius, Ron, Scabbers, then Harry, Hermione, then Remus, lastly, Severus

Peter and Scabbers are one and the same. Ron and Scabbers and Sirius all went down together with Sirius pulling Ron's leg while Ron was holding on to Scabbers. Harry followed, then Hermione literally drops on top of him. Later, Remus Lupin and Severus Snape follow.
20. How many times does Hermione call Ron by his whole first name, "Ronald"?

Answer: 4

She calls him Ronald four times. The first one was in the Leaky Cauldron, when they were arguing about Scabbers, second one was on the train when he exclaimed over how she knew everything, including the name of the professor they were sharing the cabin with.

She replies, "it's on his suitcase, Ronald". Third, when they were fighting over their respective pets, she says, "Ronald here has lost his rat". And the fourth and last, when they were coming from Divination and she says "Honestly Ronald, how can anyone be in two classes at once?" (thanks MarciZ6 & jninehawk)
21. What color dress does the fat lady wear, the one who guards the Gryffindor entrance?

Answer: white

Originally, it was pink - it says so on the book and can be seen in the first two movies. This time around, they got a different woman to play it with a different personality (the old fat lady was dignified while this fat lady is a trying-hard opera singer). For this movie, they seem to have rearranged Hogwarts.
22. During Harry's first night back in Hogwarts, he and his dorm-mates were all eating something that made them imitate some animals, who did Seamus imitate?

Answer: a monkey

Seamus, the first one we see doing this, was imitating a monkey. Neville came next and he was an elephant, Ron followed doing a lion. When Harry ate one, though, his ears started to blow off steam. Another one of the few moments in the film where the director depicted light-hearted 13-year-old innocent fun in contrast against the darker tone of the rest of the movie.
23. Apart from Harry, Ron, Hermione, and the Weasley Twins, who else knew that the "spare bit of parchment" was actually the Marauder's Map?

Answer: Professor Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin knew what it was, of course, as he was one of the four who made it.
24. In using the Time Turner, who went back in time?

Answer: Hermione and Harry

Professor Dumbledore said that they should be back before the clock finished it's strokes then he told Hermione that three turns should do it, with each turn symbolising an hour. When Hermione turned her Time Turner back three times, they stopped at 7:30. And this is weird because if we are to follow that, then that means that Hermione and Harry should be back in the hospital wing by 10:30.

However, grandfather clocks don't usually stroke in between hours... So I'm not really sure what time they ended up going back to the hospital wing.
25. How many times was Hermione supposed to turn the Time Turner back?

Answer: 3 times

What a great movie, thanks for playing.
