More Quotes from "An Unexpected Journey" Quiz

These are some quotes from the movie "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey". Because the dwarves' names can be so confusing, I have restricted quotes by dwarves to only Balin (the oldest dwarf) and Thorin Oakenshield.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When addressing the arguing trolls, who very dramatically announces, "The dawn will take you all!"?

Answer: Gandalf

Captured by trolls, Bilbo and the dwarves are about to become dinner. Bilbo picks up on the fact that the trolls cannot be out after sunrise. He also catches a glimpse of Gandalf, who has returned. Bilbo buys some time getting the trolls talking about the best way to cook the dwarves, eventually suggesting that they shouldn't be eaten at all because they are infested with parasites. Saying the above line, Gandalf strikes the boulder, which is blocking the dawning sun from the trolls, with his staff.

The boulder splits open and exposes the trolls to the sun. The trolls turn to stone. Gandalf is played by Ian McKellen.
2. When talking about the old fortress of Dol Guldur, who travels some distance to deliver this disturbing news? "A dark power dwells in there such as I have never felt before. It is the shadow of an ancient horror... one that can summon the spirits of the dead."

Answer: Radagast

Troubled by the deaths of many woodlands creatures and other, disturbing changes in the forest, Radagast follows the giant spiders back to the old fortress. Seeing the shape of a necromancer, he flees on his rabbit-drawn sled to find Gandalf, but not before picking up a Mordor blade. He catches up with Gandalf outside of Rivendell and gives him both the information and the blade. Then he offers to act as decoy, to draw away the wargs and orcs that are in pursuit of the party.
Radagast is played by Sylvester McCoy.
3. Once in Rivendell, the dwarves learn the names of the swords they found in the trolls' cave. Who says to Bilbo, "Not sure it is a sword, to be honest. More of a... letter opener really." about his sword?

Answer: Balin

Elrond identifies the swords as being of elven make and mentions the names of each of the two large swords (wielded by Thorin and Gandalf) as well as some of their battle histories. Bilbo's small sword is not given a name. Balin points out that swords are named for their performance in battle. Bilbo asks Balin if he doesn't believe that his sword had done battle and Balin replies with the above lines.
Balin is played by Ken Stott.
4. When looking at the map to the alternate entrance into the Lonely Mountain, who says, "Fate is with you Thorin Oakenshield. The same moon is upon us tonight."?

Answer: Elrond

Gandalf has given Thorin a map and a key, to provide them with an alternate way to get into the mountain that does not involve going past the dragon. However not everything is clear on the map and Gandalf needs Elrond to look at it (against Thorin's wishes). Elrond finds Moon Runes and explains that these can only be read at the same time of year, under the same moon as they were written. He then speaks the above lines.
Elrond is played by Hugo Weaving.
5. "You've been busy of late my friend. Did you think these plans and schemes of yours would go unnoticed?" Who, after surprising Gandalf with his presence in Rivendell, says this to Gandalf?

Answer: Saruman

Despite Thorin's objections, Gandalf has deliberately brought the dwarves to Rivendell to seek Elrond's help with the map. He is pleasantly surprised to find Galadriel in attendance, but is not as happy to find Saruman, the head of his order, also there. Saruman explains his presence with the above statements and then goes on to tell Gandalf that he disapproves of the plan to stir up trouble be attempting to retake the mountain back from the dragon.

He also refuses to believe anything that Radagast has imparted, even when confronted with the Mordor blade.
6. During the council at Rivendell, who speaks telepathically with Gandalf, asking "Mithrandir, why the Halfling?"?

Answer: Galadriel

While Saruman is going on about the foolishness of Radagast's news, Galadriel begins speaking with Gandalf using only her mind (but said in voiceover for our benefit). Initially she indicates that she realises that Gandalf has brought proof. Then she asks Gandalf why he has chose Bilbo for the party. Gandalf replies that, unlike Saruman, he believes that little acts can make huge changes. He also admits that he is afraid and Bilbo somehow gives him courage.
Galadriel is played by Cate Blanchett.
7. What goblin-eating cave dweller, who talks to himself and makes strange sounds in his throat, excitedly exclaims "Games! We Love games."?

Answer: Gollum

After eluding capture with the rest of the dwarves, Bilbo wrestles with a solitary goblin. They fall a great distance into the area under the mountain occupied by goblin. Bilbo watches in horror as Gollum kills the goblin and then starts to speculate about what manner of creature Bilbo is and how he might taste. Misunderstanding something Bilbo says, Gollum gets very excited about playing a game with him. If Bilbo wins Gollum agrees to lead him to the exit. If Gollum wins he will eat Bilbo.
Gollum is played by Andy Serkis.
8. Who asks the game-winning question, "What have I got in my pocket?"?

Answer: Bilbo

Engaged in a life-and-death game with Gollum, Bilbo is running out of riddles to try and stump Gollum with. He discovers the ring which he had previously found and put into his pocket, but had forgotten about. He wonders out loud what it could be. Gollum, taking this for one of Bilbo's riddles, responds angrily that it is unfair. Although he never intended it as a riddle, Bilbo sees this as his way of winning and insists that Gollum had told him to 'ask a question' and he had done just that.
Bilbo is played by Martin Freeman.
9. "You thought you could escape me. What are you going to do now wizard? ... That'll do it." Who has this exchange with Gandalf?

Answer: The Goblin King

After falling through a crack in the floor of the cave, the dwarves are captured by the goblins, led by the enormous Goblin King. Gandalf returns in time to stop any of them from being killed and leads them in an escape through the caves. They kill many goblins along the way but are stopped when the Goblin King crashes down from above and blocks their way.

He addresses Gandalf with the first two lines, after which Gandalf hits the king with his staff and slices open his belly with his sword. The Goblin King delivers the third line and falls, presumably to his death. The Goblin King is voiced by Barry Humphries.
10. After Thorin asks him why he came back, who says, "That's why I came back, because you don't have a home... it was taken from you."?

Answer: Bilbo

After escaping from the goblins' lair, the party notices that Bilbo is missing. Thorin declares that Bilbo has done nothing but think about his home since they left and has obviously taken his opportunity to make good his escape. Made invisible because he is wearing Gollum's ring, Bilbo hears this comment.

He removes the ring and announces his return to the group. When Thorin asks him why he has come back, he answers with the above quote.
