Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie begins with the party being pursued by Azog and the Orcs. Bilbo soon notices another animal tracking the party. What kind of animal is it?

Answer: Bear

While travelling down the Carrock pursued by the Orcs, Bilbo notices a very large bear is also tracking the party and informs the others. Gandalf seems familiar with the animal and tells the others there is a dwelling nearby where they can find shelter. The group finds refuge in the home.
2. The party finds refuge from their pursuers in Beorn's home. Who or what is Beorn?

Answer: A skin-changer

Gandalf tells the party that they are in Beorn's home and that he is a skin-changer. He is in fact the bear that had been following them. As a bear he is unpredictable but as a human he can be reasoned with. Beorn remains a bear through the night to protect the party from the Orcs but in the morning he returns to his human form.

Although he is not fond of Dwarves he hates Orcs more and helps the group out by lending them his ponies so they can make it to the forest of Mirkwood.
3. When the party reaches the forest of Mirkwood Gandalf is summoned away by who or what?

Answer: Galadriel

Gandalf notices Black Speech written on an old ruin when they arrive at the forest. At the same time he also receives a telepathic message from Galadriel telling him to go to High Fells of Rhudaur to check on the nine human kings who are buried there.

These are the Nazgul or Ringwraiths who figure prominently in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Gandalf leaves the Dwarves and Bilbo telling them to stay on the path and not get lost.
4. Bilbo puts on the ring during the battle with the spiders and it allows him to do what, besides disappear?

Answer: Understand what the spiders are saying

When Bilbo puts on the ring he can hear and understand exactly what the spiders are saying. They are getting ready to eat the Dwarves so he distracts them by throwing a rock and the vibration causes them to go off to investigate. Only one spider stays behind. Bilbo sticks him with his sword several times and the spider says it stings.

This is where Bilbo gets the name for his sword Sting.
5. Bilbo helps the Dwarves escape from the Elves by putting them in empty barrels and sending them down the river. What had been in the barrels?

Answer: Wine

The barrels had been filled with wine from Laketown. When the barrels are empty the Elves send them down the river back to Laketown to be refilled. Bilbo discovers this while retrieving the keys to unlock the cells the Dwarves are being kept in. He leads them back to the wine cellar and places them in the empty barrels so they can escape down the river, out of the Elf kingdom.
6. Which Dwarf is wounded by the Orcs while escaping from the Elves?

Answer: Kili

As the Dwarves head down the river, the Elves close a gate across the river sealing them in so they cannot escape. Kili gets out of his barrel to open the gate and is shot by an arrow from Bolg, who is leading the Orcs as they attack the Elf kingdom from the river searching for the Dwarves. Kili still manages to open the gate and the Dwarves head down river pursued by both Elves and Orcs.
7. Bard sneaks the Dwarves into Laketown and hides them in his home. Later on the Dwarves learn who Bard really is. Who is he?

Answer: A descendant of Girion Lord of Dale

Bard is known as Bard the Bowman and is descended from Girion, the man who failed to slay Smaug when he first attacked the Lonely Mountain and Dale. As such he is held somewhat responsible for the failings of his ancestor. He is at odds with the Master of Laketown because Alfrid, the Master's steward, has been telling the Master that Bard is behind the civil unrest in the town. Bard has one remaining Black Arrow that he gives to his son to hide at the end of the movie.

This arrow figures prominently in "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies".
8. While in Laketown who saves the wounded Dwarf from the poison of the Morgul arrow?

Answer: Tauriel

Tauriel learns from the captive Orc that the arrow that hit Kili will kill him because it had poison on it. Against her king's command she leaves the Elf kingdom to go to try to find Kili and save him. In Laketown she finds the Dwarves who stayed behind in Bard's house and uses her Elven healing powers and the herbs found by Fili to save Kili's life.
9. Who discovers that it is moonlight that will reveal the door into Lonely Mountain and not daylight, as everyone had assumed?

Answer: Bilbo

The party arrives at the door just before sunset but they do not discover the door or the keyhole and think all is lost when the sun sets. The Dwarves head down away from the area, believing their only chance to enter the mountain has been lost. Bilbo however does not give up and as the moonbeams hit the stonewall the door is revealed.

He yells back for the Dwarves to return and they do. The door is opened with the key and they are able to enter the mountain.
10. What do Thorin and the Dwarves use to try to kill Smaug?

Answer: Molten gold

Thorin directs the Dwarves to get the furnaces going again so they can melt down gold that he can use in a trap to kill Smaug. The Dwarves trick Smaug into relighting the furnaces which they then use to melt the gold. The gold is then deposited into a mold that Thorin lures Smaug to stand before. Once Smaug is in place he releases the molten gold that overwhelms Smaug who sinks beneath the surface of the molten gold. Only the plan fails and Smaug is able to escape the molten lake.

He leaves the mountain and heads towards Laketown to take his revenge on its inhabitants for helping the Dwarves.
