Her two worlds finally collide and in her first parallel world Helen dies. In her second more miserable existence she eventually breaks up with her boyfriend and actually meets James in the final scene. They exchange quotes about the Spanish Inquisition from "Monty Python".

In this dark comedy, Amber (Kirsten Dunst) enters a small town beauty contest in an effort to realise her dream of being the next Dianne Sawyer. Gladys (Kirsty Alley) and her daughter Becky (Denise Richards) have other ideas. After a litany of sabotage, Becky wins the contest and Amber is runner up.
Unfortunately Becky is burnt to death in a swan float and Amber goes off to the pageant finals. When all the other contestants are victims of food poisoning, the door is opened for Amber to pursue her dreams.

Each is linked to the other through a series of events and they turn to each other for comfort and support. As the title implies, together they are strong and survive the trials and sadness of each others' lives. Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine and Olympia Dukakis head a stellar cast.
