Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I've met some rotters in my time; but, without a doubt you're the lowest excuse for a man I've had the misfortune to meet." That is a quote from the 1931 movie, "Platinum Blonde". The film did, indeed, star a "platinum blonde" who said the line. Who was she?

Answer: Jean Harlow

Jean Harlow's character, Anne, said that to Robert Williams character, Stew, after he had promised not to print a salacious story about Anne's sister, Gloria, then printed it. Guess what? Those two fell in love - of course. Although many critics wrote Loretta Young, who was also featured in the movie, was the better actress, it was Jean Harlow who said that line and claimed the moniker, "The Platinum Blonde". Jean Harlow began acting in movies at a relatively young age - before she was 18 years old - and, sadly, her career was short.

She died from various health related causes at age 26. Another star of the movie, "Platinum Blonde", was Robert Williams. He was a very talented (and, bankable) actor but his career was unfortunately shortened, too. Williams died soon after the release of "The Platinum Blonde" from complications resulting from an appendectomy.

He was only 37 when his hopes of (which he had every reason to expect) a long and lucrative career ended.
2. "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together ... and blow." Lauren Bacall said that line in movie which was released in 1944. Her co-star was Humphrey Bogart. What was the movie?

Answer: To Have and Have Not

This quote happened when Bacall's character was trying to convince Bogart's character to take some money she had offered him. It was a very sexy scene. She kissed him and left his room with the money - after she said the quote. Even decades later and hundreds of movies released afterward there have been very few scenes that compare to the iconic moment the two actors created in that scene with their repartee. Perhaps unbelievably, "To Have and Have Not" was Lauren Bacall's first movie.

She was only 19 when the movie was filmed.

The onscreen chemistry between Bacall and Bogart was evident and their off-screen love story was remembered for many years. It has been written that, to commemorate this scene, Bogart gave Bacall a charm bracelet with a small gold whistle (charm) attached.

The charm was inscribed: "If you want anything just whistle". It has also been written that Bacall included the charm with Bogart's ashes when he was interred.
3. Vivien Leigh played an unfortunate woman named Blanche DuBois in the 1951 film adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play, "A Streetcar Named Desire". Her character's last line in that film is one of the most often quoted from cinema history. What was it?

Answer: "Whoever you are, I have always depended on the kindness of strangers."

Vivien Leigh's character, Blanche, had indeed always depended on someone else - the majority of those someones being men. Men who were easily influenced by her youthful sex appeal. Once the "bloom was off the rose" life became very different for Blanche; so much so, she needed to live in psychiatric facility - rather than with her sister and brother-in-law. Vivien Leigh won her second Academy Award for her portrayal of Blanche DuBois in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and her delivery of that line often made the "best of best" lists of movie quotes.

Theater and movie critics have drawn parallels in Tennessee Williams' own family members to the characters seen in the play/movie. Williams was especially close to his sister, Rose, who struggled with mental health troubles for many years.

Some of her struggles may have been the inspiration for those experienced by Blanche. Sources cite that Williams used revenue from the tremendous success of this play to fund health care for Rose.
4. The movie was "Funny Girl" (1968) and the character was seen - only from behind - for more than one minute. She wore high heels, a knee length leopard skin coat with a matching hat. Then she turned to face a full length mirror and said, "Hello, gorgeous". Who was the actress?

Answer: Barbra Streisand

It was Barbra Streisand and the line, "Hello, gorgeous" was the first spoken by Streisand in the film. Barbra Streisand starred in "Funny Girl" along with Omar Sharif. It was rumored those two engaged in a love affair throughout the production of the film, thus, their on-screen "chemistry" required very little "acting". Since the movie's 1968 release that unforgettable line has found its way into many aspects of the entertainment industry.

For example, a book that was released in 2020, that bills itself as "Empowering Wisdom from Bold Women ..." is titled, "Hello Gorgeous". Streisand won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her work in "Funny Girl".

When she accepted the award she looked directly at the Oscar (statuette) and said, "Hello, gorgeous". What else could she have said?
5. During the extent of the movie both leading characters, Jenny and Oliver, would say the line (at different times), "Love means never having to say you're sorry." From what movie, written by Eric Segal and released in 1970, was that line taken?

Answer: Love Story

"Love Story" was a box office hit for 1970 but what a tear-jerker. The movie featured Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neal as Jenny and Oliver. Both were nominated for an Academy Award for their work in this film but it was the music which won the Oscar (for Best Original Score) and was used in romantic settings for decades after the movie's release.

The movie was considered by the American Film Institute to be among the top-ten most romantic films ever released for many, many years after 1970. "Love means never having to say you're sorry." became an oft-quoted line from the movies.

The quote occurs twice in the film. The first time comes when Oliver gets upset when he does not find Jenny, so he apologizes and then she tells him "Love means never having to say you're sorry." Spoiler alert: Watch the movie to see the second time it is said. Unrelated movie fact: This was the first big screen appearance for actor, Tommy Lee Jones.

He had a bit part as one of Oliver's college (Harvard) roommates; he was billed as Tom Lee Jones.
6. The 1981 thriller, "Body Heat" starred William Hurt and Kathleen Turner. What does Turner's character, Matty, say to Ned, William Hurt's character, on the pier after he follows her there? It is very early in the film.

Answer: "You're not too smart, are you? I like that in a man."

It would appear that Kathleen Turner hit "pay dirt" with her feature film debut. Although Turner had worked some on television, "Body Heat" was her first movie. Turner's deep, sultry voice and alluring appeal was perfect for the scheming character of Matty Walker - a woman intent on using William Hurt's character, Ned Racine, to help her murder he husband.

The quote sets the tone for just how much sway Turner's character, Matty, intends to have over Hurt's character, Ned, as the "predator" becomes the "prey".

The film's writer/director, Lawrence Kasdan, went on record to say the way Turner sounded was exactly the way he had "heard" the character in his head as he wrote "Body Heat". Unrelated movie bit: Christopher Reeve refused the part of Ned Racine when it was offered to him. Reeve said (later) that he did not think he could play the part of a "seedy lawyer" and he was very glad his friend, William Hurt, had taken the role.
7. The declaration of "I am your number one fan. There is nothing to worry about. You are going to be just fine." could have been comforting in many settings. But in the 1990 psychological thriller film, "Misery" such was not the case. Who was the actress who gave us all chills with her delivery of those lines in the movie?

Answer: Kathy Bates

Kathy Bates delivered those lines perfectly as Annie Wilkes. She was "the biggest fan" of author Paul Sheldon (played by James Caan) but her intentions were more self-centered than just nurturing him back to health. Indeed he should have been worried as "Annie" was determined to influence his writing - in a most bizarre way.

The film "Misery" was based on a novel by Stephen King of the same name. King has said it was among his favorite film adaptations. No wonder! It was the first film - and, for many years - the only film based on a Stephen King novel to win an Academy Award; Kathy Bates won the Best Actress Award for her portrayal of scary nurse, Annie Wilkes. The film's collective talent did not stop with King and Bates, it was directed by Rob Reiner, William Goldman did the screenwriting and it also featured James Caan, Lauren Bacall, Richard Farnsworth, Graham Jarvis and Frances Sternhagen. Movie fun fact: À la Alfred Hitchcock, Rob Reiner did a cameo appearance in his film. Reiner is the helicopter pilot seen with the Police Chief as they search for the missing Paul Sheldon (James Caan's character); it is a quick shot of Reiner.
8. The phrase, "You had me at 'hello'", was said by Renée Zellweger's character, Dorothy, in response to a profound apology from her estranged husband, played by Tom Cruise. The scene was in a 1996 romantic-comedy about a sports agent who lost his job for all the right reasons. What movie?

Answer: Jerry Maguire

Renée Zellweger's character, Dorothy, said, "You had me at 'hello'", to Tom Cruise's character, Jerry, after he had interrupted a "gal-pal party" at her house. They had separated (from their marriage) and Jerry walked in and said "Hello" followed by a long, long list of reasons why they should reconcile.

Her response conveyed her feelings. The film was a box office success and was well received by movie critics, too. It was nominated for five Academy Awards; Cuba Gooding, Jr. won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

In addition to "You had me at 'hello'", fans of the movie often quote: "Show me the money", "You complete me", "Help me, help you" and "Just another shark in a suit".
9. In the 2006 film, "The Devil Wears Prada", co-star Emily Blunt's character, Emily, delivered a line about her appearance that added comic relief but also showed the extreme nature of the importance of body image. What did Emily say about her recent weight loss?

Answer: "I'm just one stomach flu away from my goal weight."

"The Devil Wears Prada" was billed as a comedy-drama about the fashion industry with the Merle Streep portraying magazine editor, Miranda Priestly, and Anne Hathaway as her not-so-capable, aspiring journalist, co-assistant, Andy Sachs. Both Streep and Hathaway, along with Emily Blunt, were praised for their performances.

The film did very well at the box office and grossed almost ten times its budget. Surprisingly, since the use of designer clothes and accessories shown in the film was said to have made it one of the most expensive costumed movies in film history. One source cited Patricia Field, who served as film stylist, as saying, "We must have used at least $1 million worth of clothing." (As quoted in the "New York Post".)
10. In the 2015 film, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" fans heard character, Rey, say: "I know how to run without you holding my hand!" Who was the English actress who found her initial film success portraying the grown-up Rey in that movie?

Answer: Daisy Ridley

The "Star Wars" film series had no shortage of strong and capable female characters. The 2015 film, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" introduced fans to Rey, who trained to be a Jedi with Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa. Using the quote mentioned in the question Rey - played by Daisy Ridley - lets former stormtrooper, Finn, know that his intention of (too often) lending her a hand would be unnecessary.

In this film Finn was portrayed by British actor John Boyega. Daisy Ridley would reprise the role of Rey in two more segments of the "Star Wars" series - "The Last Jedi" (2017) and "The Rise of Skywalker" (2019). Between those two films fans of Ridley could see her as she played the title character of the romantic drama, "Ophelia", that was released in 2018.
