Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who sings this, "...slave of fashion, basking in your glory."?

Answer: Phantom

The Phantom sings this to Christine after the performance of "Hannibal" when she is in her dressing room. The Phantom is appearing as Christine's angel of music in the mirror of her dressing room at the Opera House. He is singing this about Raoul because he feels Raoul is taking credit and glory in her talent after the performance.

This is after Raoul insists on taking her to supper against her better wishes because "the angel is strict."
2. Who sings it? "Will you still play when the rest of us are dead?"

Answer: Raoul

Raoul sings this in the prologue when he buys the Phantom's music box. He is singing to the box, remembering Christine, with a broken heart.
I want the music box so badly.
3. "A great black hole served as the nose that never grew." Who sings it?

Answer: Buquet

This takes place in the song "The Magical Lasso". It is where Buquet is trying to scare the ballerinas. He is singing about the Phantom, telling the dancers what the Phantom looks like. The dancers seem to be enjoying the story until Madame Giry stops it and confronts Buquet.
4. "Who was the shape in the shadows? Whose is the face of the mask?" Who sings it?

Answer: Christine

Christine sings this once she wakes up after "Music of the Night". The Phantom's monkey music box wakes her up. She is singing this trying to remember if she really saw the Phantom or if it was a dream. She gets her answer when she wakes up and sees the Phantom and sings this right before she takes off his mask, causing him to knock her down and yell at her. ("I Remember/Stranger than You Dreamt It")
This is one of my favorite scenes because you really see the Phantom's insecurity!
5. How about this one; who sings it? "...this repulsive carcass, who seems a beast but secretly dreams of beauty, secretly, secretly."

Answer: The Phantom

This is right after Christine takes off the Phantom's mask in the scene mentioned in the previous question. This is the Phantom's song "Stranger Than You Dreamt It", which is one of my favorites. At this point the Phantom shares his inmost feelings, wants and dreams with Christine.

It makes him become human and makes us see the pain he must really experience. He is singing of the pain and insecurity he has faced throughout life and reveals how he's always just wanted the same things as others have.
6. "Yet in his eyes, all the sadness of the world, those pleading eyes that both threaten and adore..." Who sings it?

Answer: Christine

Christine sings this to Raoul on the roof ("Why Have You Brought Me Here/Raoul I've Been There") in the scene before they sing "All I Ask of You". Raoul is trying to convince her that there is no Phantom but she has proof - she's seen him. She explains the emotions in the Phantom's eyes.

In his eyes she saw sadness and a pleading. But now she sees that the eyes are also full of threat and adoration. This is shortly after the Phantom commits his first murder and Christine is feeling so many things about who her angel of music is.
7. "...let me be your light." Who sings this one?

Answer: Both Raoul and The Phantom

This is during "All I Ask of You" and Raoul sings it to Christine. Raoul sings this to Christine shortly after the Phantom's first murder. He is on the roof with Christine after she ran from the opera house. He sings this promise to her and it is a duet between the couple. After this song, Raoul proposes and Christine accepts.

This causes the Phantom's reprise of this song. In his reprise he also sings this line, and it is also directed towards Christine.
8. Who sings this? "He was bound to love you when he heard you sing."

Answer: The Phantom

This is one of my favorite scenes and lines of the whole production. The Phantom sings his reprise of "All I Ask of You" after he sees Christine and Raoul singing together and Christine falling in love with Raoul. The Phantom is actually crying in this scene because his muse has fallen in love with someone else.
9. "Hide your face so the world will never find you". Who sings it?

Answer: Chorus and The Phantom

The first time we hear this is during the song "Masquerade". The chorus, or the whole cast, sings this. This is the opening song for Act 2, when Andre and Firmin throw a masquerade ball for New Years Eve. They also hadn't seen the Phantom for a long time.

In all their celebrations, the Phantom returns to scare everyone once again. We hear it again at the end of the musical, sung by the Phantom. After "Down Once More", and Christine chooses Raoul over the Phantom. He is playing his music box which plays "Masquerade".

He no longer has his mask on and is crying. He nearly whispers, he sings this so softly.
10. "It's over now, the music of the night!" Who sings this?

Answer: Phantom

This is the last line of the musical. This after the Phantom sees Christine run away with Raoul. He realizes he will never have Christine and that she will never love him. It is such a heartbreaking moment for him, as he realizes he can never give Christine what Raoul can. Without Christine, the Phantom has no muse.

She was the only person who could help him make music. Without her, there is no music of the night to sing.
