From him they needed a ship, a crew and his navigational charts so that they could sail off the edge of the Earth to rescue their beloved Captain Jack. Jack had been killed at the end of the second movie, "Dead Man's Chest", by the Kraken, Davy Jones' sea monster.

Lord Cutler Beckett and the East India Trading Company had control of the sea because Beckett had in his possession the heart of Davy Jones, and could therefore command the Flying Dutchman. The East India Trading Company having control of the sea meant a huge blow to pirates everywhere.

The Company was able to track down and sink many pirate vessels, and the pirates on board were all put to death in a mass hanging shown at the beginning of the film.

Elizabeth indirectly killed Jack at the end of "Dead Man's Chest", when she handcuffed him to the mast of the Black Pearl, leaving him to be killed by the Kraken while the rest of them escaped. After Jack said this quote in "At World's End", Elizabeth looked very guilty and all the other members of the crew were shocked, especially Will.

The other three people who tried to kill Jack but were unsuccessful were Barbossa, Pintel and Ragetti, as Jack's enemies in the first film "The Curse of the Black Pearl". Will also tried to kill Jack at the beginning of the first film, when they were sword-fighting in the blacksmith's shop.

In "At World's End", it was revealed that Tia Dalma, the haunting and macabre woman who aided the crew in "Dead Man's Chest" and brought Captain Barbossa back to life, was the human form of the goddess Calypso. Captain Barbossa released her from her human body in "At World's End".

Sao Feng had taken Elizabeth aboard the Empress because he believed that it was she who was the goddess Calypso in human form. The Empress came under attack by the Flying Dutchman and Sao Feng was killed. Before he died he passed on the duties of ship's captain to Elizabeth, also giving her his place as one of the nine pirate lords in the Brethren.

Captain Teague, played by Keith Richards, believed so firmly in the Pirate Code that he would shoot anyone who denounced it, as shown during the meeting of the Brethren Court. He was the keeper of the code book and would bring it out whenever there was a dispute as to what should be done. Captain Teague was also Jack Sparrow's father. Jack Sparrow's mother was shown to be a shrunken head that Captain Teague carried around.

Norrington, back on the side of the English Navy after having clawed his way back to the good graces of Lord Beckett by capturing the heart of Davy Jones, was helping Elizabeth and the crew of the Empress escape after they were taken prisoner on board the Flying Dutchman. Bootstrap Bill Turner, Will's father, who seemed to have lost his marbles a little bit in this film, found them escaping and stabbed Norrington for treachery.

They were married by Captain Barbossa while fighting a battle against Davy Jones' sea creature servants and the Royal Navy. Due to the big battle in which the odds did not favour the crew of the Black Pearl, Will was afraid he would not get another chance to marry her, and insisted that the marriage take place immediately.

Will was killed at the hand of Davy Jones during the battle, but Jack had Davy Jones' heart and used Will's hand to stab the heart. Davy Jones died, and as the legend went, the Dutchman had to have a captain; whoever stabbed the heart of the captain became the new captain - and had to place his own heart in the chest and would become immortal. Will acquired the job of ferrying those who die at sea to 'the other side'.
