Answer: The Coconut Grove Girls

Debbie Reynolds, as Kathy, is with the Coconut Grove Girls. In the movie she jumps out of a cake at a party Gene Kelly, as Don, is attending. This is a movie made in 1952, showing the trials and tribulations of moving from silent movies to talkies, while filling in the space with an unrequited love story of Gene Kelly and Jean Hagen.

It finally ends with a requited one of Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. The final scene shows them kissing in front of a billboard advertising the movie.
3. In "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", filmed in 1953, which character says, "I like a man who can run faster than I can"?

Answer: Dorothy Shaw

In this Anita Loos story, the "two little girls from Little Rock", Shaw (Jane Russell) and Lee (Marilyn Monroe) travel by ship to Paris with a private investigator Lee's fiance's father has hired dogging their footsteps. The father suspects Lee wants only to marry his son for his money.

By the time the trip is over, the investigator and Shaw have fallen in love and Lee has won over the father. Thus, the movie ends with a double wedding for the "two little girls from Little Rock". In this quote, Dorothy is speaking of the pole vaulter with the group of athletes on the also on the ship.

She is not as interested in money as she is in love.

Made in 1950, this movie, based on a story by Mary Orr, is about a young woman, played by Anne Baxter. She pushes herself into the group around an older but well established actress, played by Bette Davis, in order to use them and their contacts to rise to the top of the theatrical world, in any way she can.

She wants so much to, as the quote says, hear the "applause". The film received six Academy Awards including that of Best Picture.
5. What character in "Quo Vadis" said, "It is not enough to live well. One must die well"?

Answer: Petronius

A monumental work by MGM and released in 1951, "Quo Vadis" showed Petronius, a trusted advisor who treated Nero with both adulation and hidden scorn, as he historically is said to have done. The movie starred Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr, with Leo Genn as Petronius and is based on a happening in the Acts of Peter.

The film includes both historically correct as well as fictionalized people and events. Petronius committed suicide at a dinner he held for his closest friends, and before dying wrote Nero a letter telling him what a bore he was and that was the cause of Petronius' death. Petronius "died well".
6. In which 1953 movie does Joe Bradley, played by Gregory Peck, say the following line: "I haven't worn a nightgown in years"?

While on a tour of European capitals, a princess, played by Audrey Hepburn in her American debut, rebels against her schedule and sneaks out, after having taken a sleeping pill. She is found sleeping on a park bench by an American newsman, Bradley, who takes her home to sleep it off. Later, he pretends he doesn't know who she is, hoping for an exclusive interview, and offers to show her the sites of Rome.

While doing this, he falls in love with her. The quote is one Bradley says to Princess Ann, in reply to her question if he "had a silk nightgown with rosebuds".

Eventually, Marty, played by Ernest Borgnine, and Clara, played by Betsy Blair, find their way to love. The movie won four Oscars, including Best Actor, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Writing, Screenplay.
9. "I assume he had a mother, but I am not certain", is a quote made about what protagonist of this 1956 movie who did a great deal of traveling in a relative hurry. What was the character's name?

Answer: Phileas Fogg

"Around the World in Eighty Days" starred David Niven as Phileas Fogg and a very droll Cantinflas as his valet, Passepartout. In this lovely film, the two travel around the world by any means they can find when need be. In doing so they end up a trio with a rescued princess, played by Shirley MacLaine.

In fact, the quote is in reply to a question asked by Princess Aouda as to whether or not there had been any women in Fogg's life. All kinds of missteps occur, but Fogg still keeps to his usual schedule, even down to mealtimes, which more than keeps Passepartout jumping! A fun movie with over 40 cameo performances, and glorious scenery, it won five Academy Awards as well as roughly 65 other awards.
10. "Be happy in your work." An enemy Colonel said these words in a 1957 movie about an incident in the Second World War. What was the name of this powerful movie?

Answer: The Bridge on the River Kwai

Starring Alec Guinness and William Holden, the film tells the story British prisoners of war who are forced to build a railway bridge. Although most of the POWs wish to sabotage the bridge, their Colonel Nicholson, played by Guinness, persuades them to build it as a monument to British morale and dignity.

As it turns out, he has deluded himself and the bridge is really monument to himself and not British character, thus the building of it could be called a collaboration with the enemy. In the meanwhile, the Americans are sending a troop in to destroy the bridge.

The quote was said by Col. Saito, played by Sessue Hayakawa, when Col. Nicholson and his men arrived at the POW camp. The movie won seven Academy Awards.
