Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie that started it all is the 1968 classic titled 'Night of the Living Dead'. It stars Duane Jones and Judith O'Dea. What happens to the character of Ben at the end of the film?

Answer: He is shot through a window.

While Ben is the lone survivor in the house, he is awakened by the sounds of gunfire outside. When he goes to the window to see what's happening, he is mistaken for one of the undead, and is shot through the head by someone in a group who are killing the zombies.

His body is then dragged out of the house and burned along with the others. Such a tragic ending for someone who went through so much to try and survive. This classic film is known to many fans as the one that started the zombie genre, and is also the one that portrays the undead as flesh eaters who need to be shot in the head in order to be destroyed. George A. Romero, who is known by horror fans as the "Godfather of the Dead" created this masterpiece on a small budget of $114,000.

It has grossed over $30 million. He is the director, editor, cinematographer and one of the writers.
2. A teenage boy who believes himself to be a vampire is the premise of this 1978 film that is written and directed by Romero. What is the name of this film?

Answer: Martin

John Amplas plays the title role in this classic low budget horror gem. Martin may not have fangs, nor does he need to stay out of direct sunlight, but he does truly believe that he is a vampire. This film has been said to be Romero's personal favorite of all his movies.

He plays the role of Father Howard, while Tom Savini (another horror icon) plays the role of Arthur. 'Martin' was made on an estimated budget of $80,000.
3. Romero is the director and screenplay writer for the 1988 film titled 'Monkey Shines'. It is about a man named Allen who becomes a quadriplegic and is given a trained monkey to help him with things around the house. What is the monkey's name in the film?

Answer: Ella

Things seem so pleasant in the beginning. The relationship between Allan and Ella is great, as she helps him and obeys his wishes... at first. But things turn ugly fast as Ella starts becoming very possessive of her owner! She is genetically modified and has the ability to read his mind, and act out in aggressive ways towards anyone she feels necessary!
4. Ten years after 'Night of the Living Dead', Romero presents us with his follow-up masterpiece 'Dawn of the Dead'. This film takes place inside a shopping mall. What is the name of the mall?

Answer: Monroeville Mall

Romero is the director, writer and editor of this gruesome sequel that stars Ken Foree, David Emge, Scott Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross. The movie tagline is "When there's no more room in HELL the dead will walk the EARTH".
5. In the year 2000, Romero wrote and directed a film about a man named Henry Creedlow who is unhappy with his life due to everyone he knows treating him badly. His boss, his best friend, his wife, even his housekeeper and his dog! So one day he wakes up and realizes that his whole face has mysteriously changed into a completely white mask without any facial features. He then goes after his tormentors who wronged him. What is the name of this French horror thriller?

Answer: Bruiser

When Henry tries to remove the white mask off his face, he ends up cutting himself because it won't come off! The tagline is "Meet the new face of terror". This movie was filmed in Toronto.
6. The 1990 horror film 'Two Evil Eyes' is a double feature film with both stories being inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe. While Romero directed one of the movie's tales, another famous filmmaker directed the other. Who is it?

Answer: Dario Argento

Romero has worked with Argento prior to this film on 'Dawn of the Dead'. Argento directed a segment called 'The Black Cat', while Romero directed 'The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar'. Originally it was supposed to be done with four short films by four different directors that also included John Carpenter and Wes Craven, but the latter two pulled out of the project leaving just Romero and Argento to each direct their own film segment of the film. Argento is famous in his own right with a very impressive filmography that includes 'Suspiria' (1977), 'Demons' (1985) and 'Mother of Tears' (2007) just to name a few.
7. This 1973 classic has the tagline "Why Are the Good People Dying?" and also has the alternate title called 'Code Name: Trixie'. It spawned a 2010 remake that Romero is the executive producer of. Name the film.

Answer: The Crazies

'The Crazies' is about a small town in Pennsylvania that becomes overrun with a man-made virus meant to be used for the military. Turns out the side effects are killer! People who become infected go insane and eventually die! While insane they have the urge to hurt others, even causing death! The military men dressed in white quarantine suits do what they must in order to contain the virus! Bill Hinzman, who is the first zombie seen in 'Night of the Living Dead', has a small role as a "crazy".
8. Which of these "dead" films is about a group of film students who encounter the undead while in the midst of trying to make a horror film?

Answer: Diary of the Dead

This 2007 movie is a bit different from Romero's other films. Rpmero takes this film more in the direction of the whole "found footage" style flick, but without the severe movement of the shaky camera that makes most people nauseous! We get to see what the filmmakers see, usually at the time they see it... which adds to the suspense. Watching all the zombie action through a video camera gives the viewer the feeling of actually being there when the apocalypse is happening.

Another great entry added to Romero's filmography!
9. What is the name of the trained zombie in the 1985 film 'Day of the Dead'?

Answer: Bub

In this film, scientists are using an underground compound to experiment on the undead to try and make them more human and docile. The most advanced zombie creation is "Bub". He knows how to hold a gun, he listens to music, and even knows how to salute. Of course, this may all seem like fun and games at first.

But this is a George A. Romero film, so as one would imagine... things turn very ugly!
10. And so last, but not least... we have the 1982 horror anthology 'Creepshow'. Directed by Romero and written by Stephen King, this fun film is definitely a classic. Not counting the prologue and epilogue, there are five stories. The titles are "Father's Day", "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill", "Something to Tide You Over", "The Crate" and... wait... what is that last segment called?

Answer: They're Creeping Up on You

'They're Creeping Up on You' is about a mean, rich businessman named Upson Pratt who lives as a hermit in an all white upscale apartment. When the city has a blackout, Mr. Pratt finds himself helplessly fighting off cockroaches. First there's only one, then two... then hordes of them! 'Creepshow' spawned two sequels, but most fans will say that the original film is the best by far! Stephen King himself stars as the title role in "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill".
