Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What event leads to Lovis saying that Ronia's life begins magnificently?

Answer: The castle splitting in two.

Because all answer choices are found in this scene I will describe the scene. Ronia is born during this terrible thunderstorm which leads to Matt running out to the robbers and yelling that he has a daughter. Lovis then comes out from the bedroom carrying Ronia and Matt passes her around to some of the robbers so they can hold her. Suddenly the castle starts shaking and Noddle-Pete runs around yelling that the castle has split into two parts, which is when Lovis says that Ronia's life starts magnificently. Matt is convinced that the castle is still a good place to grow up and as Ronia burps, he yells that she can talk. Matt is now very happy, because by the birth of Ronia, his clan is secured another generation.
2. Which of the earlier scenes do we see Ronia relive in one of her dreams?

Answer: The one where she and Birk are lost in the fog

Ronia and Birk are arguing in the forest when the fog arrives. While trying to get home, Ronia is taken over by the Unearthlies. Afterwards, Ronia can't remember what happened in the forest. She had scratched Birk on the cheek and asked him if he had been bitten by the wolf. When she got home she told her father that she couldn't remember what she had been doing in the forest.
3. After what event do Ronia and Birk become friends?

Answer: After Birk gets her foot out of the Rumphob's hole

While skiing in the forest, Ronia's leg slips into a hole in the ground, goes through the roof of the Rumphob's hole and she becomes stuck. A harpy then arrives and threatens to grab Ronia and fly away with her. While the harpy is flying off to get her sisters, Birk arrives and helps dig out Ronia's leg.
4. What is Birk's reaction when Ronia sacrifices herself, while Birk is held captive by Matt?

Answer: He smiles.

As Matt and Borka are rivals, Birk and Ronia's friendship has to be kept a secret. One day when Ronia comes home, Matt reveals that he has captured Birk. Ronia, of course, is not happy about this as she and Birk feel like brother and sister. Matt tries to cut a deal with Borka; if Borka moves out of the castle, Borka will get Birk back. Ronia sees the evil side of her father and sacrifices herself for Birk by jumping across Hell's Gap, onto Borka's side of the castle.

As she jumps, we see Birk's face for a second and we see him smiling.
5. Where does Birk find the knife?

Answer: Under the moss

Birk comes back with a freshly-caught salmon and asks Ronia for the knife, which she claims not to have. They start arguing about who had the knife last which leads to Ronia running off. Birk kicks the moss, in anger, and finds the knife.
Birk and Ronia, about eleven years old, live in a cave in the forest for an entire summer. They manage to go fishing, bake bread and stay alive. This is very impressive for two eleven-year old kids.
6. Who, among the following, doesn't come and visit Ronia and Birk while they live in the cave?

Answer: Noddle-Pete

First they get a visit from Little-Snip who was sent by Lovis with bread. Next, Lovis comes by to explain to Ronia that Matt is very sad and cries and calls out Ronia's name in his sleep. At last, Matt comes by to ask Ronia to come home.
7. Why does Birk agree to move back to the castle?

Answer: Ronia threatens to stay in the cave with him during the winter.

As Birk had been kept a prisoner by Matt and his robbers for about a day, it is very understandable that Birk isn't crazy about Matt or his robbers but Ronia still means a lot to him. By the time Matt arrives to ask Ronia to come home, he says that Birk can come too. Birk says that he would rather freeze to death in the cave than live with Matt and his robbers. Ronia gets mad and says that he wouldn't be freezing to death alone because then she would stay with him. Birk didn't want to waste Ronia's life so he finally agrees to move back to the castle.
8. What is the first sign we see that shows Matt is warming up about Borka?

Answer: Matt allowing Birk to visit Ronia

When Matt finally succeeds in convincing Ronia to move back home, he allows Birk to come and visit Ronia in Matt's half of the castle. Afterwards Noddle-Pete keeps saying that Matt and Borka should team up to become a stronger gang against the King's Men. Which they finally do.

After dueling to see who is the stronger leader of the two gangs, they celebrate with a beer. At the end, Ronia and Birk inform Matt that they are moving back out to the cave.
9. Why does Matt feel that it's a problem that children, nowadays, go their own way?

Answer: Neither Ronia or Birk want to become robbers.

This is said after Matt and Borka come inside, after the duel between them. Earlier on in the movie, when Ronia is told what robbers do for a living, she makes it clear to Matt that she doesn't want to become a robber. After the duel, which Matt wins, he tells Borka to cheer up since Birk would be the future chief of the robbers, since Ronia didn't want the job. Birk then makes it clear to both Matt and Borka that he doesn't want to become a robber either.

This is where Matt says that children go their own way nowadays.
10. Which of the following events happens last in the movie?

Answer: Matt and Lovis dance around the table inside the castle.

Firstly, Matt and Borka join forces. Secondly, Matt, Borka and their robbers beat the king's men in a fight, which Borka tells Undis when they return to the castle. Thirdly, Noddle-Pete dies of old age. Lastly, Matt and Lovis dance around the table inside the castle, after Ronia and Birk tell them that they are moving back to the cave for the summer.

It is never said in the movie, but it seems like the robbers have split up. The only scene that comes after this in the movie is where Ronia and Birk are riding up a hill toward the cave and look out upon the forest.
