Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Starter For 10" tells the story of the young and curious Brian Jackson's dream to appear on a classic British quiz show. Which show is this?

Answer: University Challenge

The character Brian Jackson is played by young Scottish actor, James McAvoy - star of TV show "Shameless", and the film "The Last King of Scotland".

The film "Starter For 10" was directed by Tom Vaughan, was released in 2006, and was set in 1985.

"University Challenge" is one of the most prestigious quiz competitions in the country, as well as one of the most difficult! The format of the show is elimination style, where teams from different universities around the country compete to win the annual championships. The original series was broadcast on ITV from 1962-87, whilst the current series has been shown on BBC2 since 1994.
2. As well as James McAvoy, there were several well known actors who starred in "Starter For 10". Which comedian, known best for her catchphrases such as "Am I bovvered!" and "How very dare you!", played the role of Brian's mother?

Answer: Catherine Tate

Julie Jackson, played by Catherine Tate, is rather dippy and, as the sole parent and guardian of Brian, is very fussy and protective over her son.

Tate became a prominent figure of British comedy when she was given her own sketch show ("The Catherine Tate Show") in 2004. Notable characters include Lauren the teenager, Joannie, the foul-mouthed granny, and Derek, who is very adamant he is NOT gay. Tate also appeared in the TV show, "Doctor Who" in 2006 (as well as several follow-up appearances on the show).
3. Whereas Brian is excited about going to university, his friends back home think that it may change him for the worse (although they use their own, colourful language). Where is "back home"?

Answer: Westcliff-on-Sea

There are several scenes of the film set in Westcliff-on-Sea (although filming actually took place in the village of Jaywick). We see two of Brian's friends from home - Tone, played by James Corden, and Spencer, played by Dominic Cooper. Whereas Spencer is portrayed as Brian's best friend, Tone is the more comical character and appears as very selfish and blunt. Dominic Cooper has starred in films such as "The History Boys" and "Mamma Mia". James Corden has also appeared in "The History Boys", as well as in TV's "Gavin & Stacey", and the sketch show "Horne and Corden".
4. Upon arriving at university, Brian keeps an optimistic smile whilst meeting his rather odd flatmates, being assigned the smallest room in the flat and being dragged to a party themed "Tarts & Vicars". Which university does Brian attend?

Answer: Bristol

During his interview, Brian tells the interviewers that he wants to know everything, and how he longs to be in a place where people share that desire. Upon standing up to leave the interview hall, Brian hears "we'll see you in September, Mr. Jackson".

The person who delivers this news is to be Brian's English literature lecturer. Brian joins many activist groups after starting university, and is heavily influenced by the political views of his friend, Rebecca Epstein.
5. Brian's thirst for knowledge starts from a young age. Who is seen to be Brian's inspiration?

Answer: His father

Brian's dad worked as a window salesman, but died at a young age. We are told that his dad was a huge fan of quiz shows. This is reflected in the first scene, where a young Brian watches an episode of "University Challenge". The question asked in that episode of "University Challenge" ("from the Greek meaning "wing" and "finger" what was the name of the flying reptile of the Triassic and Cretaceous period?") is similar to a question on the episode on which Brian features, allowing him to answer quickly and get his "starter for 10".
6. Returning home for Christmas, Brian finds that his mum has found a boyfriend - Des. What is the occupation of Des?

Answer: Ice cream man

Brian is not at all keen on Des, who he previously knew as the "guy down the street". Des, however, is nothing but pleasant towards Brian throughout the film. Brian discovers that his mother has entered a new relationship after walking in on her and Des in the bath together. Des stays with Brian and his mother for the Christmas meal. During this meal, Brian tells his mum that he intends to appear on "University Challenge".

Whilst Des congratulates Brian on the "great news", Julie tells him that she thought he was going to tell her something else.
7. Brian's first love interest in the film is Alice. During their date in a restaurant, Alice comments on a rather odd type of pizza on the menu. What type of pizza is this?

Answer: One with chips on it

Brian tells Alice that the restaurant looked much nicer from outside, as inside it is rather tacky and the service is poor. The pizza in question is advertised as the "King Edward" pizza. Brian mentions that he will order the garlic mushrooms and is met with the response, "well, you won't be snogging anyone tonight".

The couple get past the awkward start to the date and begin to enjoy themselves. Brian later opens up to Alice, telling her about his father and the life lessons he learned from him, such as how knowledge is the key to success and how it is important to get a job that you enjoy.
8. As Alice is also on the quiz team, she and Brian spend more and more time together. After being invited to Alice's cottage over New Year, Brian runs into her naked parents in the middle of the night. What fact makes this encounter even worse?

Answer: Brian is stoned.

Straight after spending Christmas at home, Brian makes his way to Alice's parents' cottage. After dinner, Alice talks Brian into smoking marijuana and he becomes stoned. As a side affect of him smoking marijuana, Brian gets the "munchies" later and so goes downstairs to make a sandwich, using left over meat which his mother had given to him.

Whilst in the kitchen, he runs into Rose, Alice's mother, who is naked. Although she doesn't seem to mind Brian seeing her naked, she does not appreciate the humor of Brian's question, "Are you trying to seduce me Mrs. Harbinson?" Alice's nude father joins them in the kitchen and it becomes clear that Brian has been taking drugs. Alice tells Brian the next morning that they have to leave due to emergency, leaving him to return to university early.
9. Under the leadership of the rather pompous PhD student, Patrick Watts, Brian and his quiz team show promise of doing well in the competition. Do they manage to win their first round match?

Answer: No

After a poor start against the tough opposition of last years' winners, Queens' College Cambridge, Bristol makes a terrific comeback - a team effort, but most points are won by Brian. Nearing the end of the game, Brian answers a question before it is even asked. He knew the answer due to seeing the question by chance shortly before the recording began. Because of this, recording is stopped and the team is disqualified from the competition.

Originally, Brian is first reserve for the team, having failed to make the top four after being beaten by Alice in the tryouts by one point. However, after one of the contestants is hit by a bus, Brian is on the team. Other team members include Patrick (doing a PhD in mechanical engineering), Alice (doing drama) and Lucy Chang (a medicine student).
10. After moping around following the events at the quiz show recording, Brian returns to university to try and improve his failing grades. He also makes a choice about the girl he wants to be with. Who does he choose?

Answer: Rebecca

Although being instantly smitten with Alice earlier in the film, the events at New Year and the fact that she "fooled around" with Brian's best friend, Spencer, tell Brian that she is not the girl for him. Rebecca, on the other hand, is portrayed as much deeper than the superficial Alice, and keeps Brian company on his early return at New Year.

After kissing her at the stroke of midnight, Brian wishes "happy new year, Alice" to Rebecca, which she does *not* appreciate! However, she easily forgives Brian and the two share a kiss in the final minutes of the film.
