Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In directing this film, the director made a small departure from his previous films. Primarily known for his work in the "horror" genre, he may be remembered as the director of "The Thing," "Halloween," "Ghosts of Mars," and many others. Who is he?

Answer: John Carpenter

In retrospect, this film is quite mild in comparison to other John Carpenter films. Although relatively critically successful, this was not really a great box office hit. Carpenter's largest financial success continues to be "Halloween".
2. This prodigious actor comes from a celebrated family of acting talent. He has an actor brother named Beau and an actor father named Lloyd. Can you identify the actor that portrayed the "alien" in this film?

Answer: Jeff Bridges

Jeff Bridges is phenomenal as the "alien" in this film. His reproduction of foreign language accents is extensive. He has been nominated numerous times for film awards.
3. Can you identify the name of the craft which carries an invitation to visit Earth? In the film, it launches from Cape Kennedy in 1977.

Answer: Voyager II

In the opening sequence, the Voyager II is launched into space with a recording of images of Earth, musical sequences and a message of greetings in more than 50 languages. The declaration is that, "Voyager II is our invitation to other intelligent species in the universe. Please come and visit our planet Earth."
4. As is apparently typical with extraterrestrial visitors in science fiction films, what happens to the visiting spacecraft?

Answer: It is attacked and shot down.

The destruction of the spacecraft is arguably a naturally defensive reaction, but after all, they were invited. A lone survivor emerges from the attack, and we have our plot.
5. In which U.S. state does the spacecraft land? This state has the nickname of, "The Badger State". The capitol is Madison.

Answer: Wisconsin

The spacecraft crash lands into an area near Chequamegon Bay, in Wisconsin. Fortunately, for the space traveler, it is in a relatively isolated part of the country.
6. A civilian (Mark Shermin) is inducted to assist with the investigation of the anomalous landing of a spacecraft. For which organization does he work?

Answer: SETI

Mark Shermin (Charles Martin Smith) is a mid-level government employee associated with SETI. (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) He is immediately excited about the prospects of this discovery.
7. The alien has transformed himself into the image of Scott. The former Scott has tragically died in an accident. What is the name of Scott's widow?

Answer: Jenny Hayden

Jenny Hayden is portrayed by Karen Allen. Jenny is shocked by the assimilation of her departed husband by the alien. Initially, she is appalled, frightened and disturbed. However, with acquaintance, their relationship grows into something significant.
8. The alien must reach a certain destination within a prescribed amount of time. He has learned the ways of human existence through observation. The alien is driving a car. How does he interpret a yellow light?

Answer: "Go very fast"

The alien's reluctant driving companion is shocked when the alien zooms through a yellow light and causes multiple collisions. She exclaims, "I thought you knew the rules!" The alien calmly replies, "I watched you very carefully. Red light - stop, Green light - go, Yellow light - go very fast."
9. The alien's captive decides that she is very hungry and that they should stop for dinner. She takes this opportunity to decide to part ways. However, something very dramatic and poignant happens. What makes her change her mind?

Answer: The alien resurrects a deer.

The alien's captive wants to leave him to his own devices and escape on the next bus. However, she observes a miracle, in which the alien reanimates a deer. The deer had been killed by hunters, but the alien uses his powers to revive the deer. It is perhaps the single most poignant and riveting scene of the film.

This single act endears the woman to the alien and they are emotionally bound together from this point on.
10. In which U.S. state does the alien spacecraft arrive in order to transport the alien home? It's also known as the "Grand Canyon State," and the state capitol is Phoenix.

Answer: Arizona

It is imperative upon the government to capture the alien, dissect and analyze him. Fortunately, the errant government employee chooses to intercede and afford a temporary respite for the alien. The alien provides a wonderful gift for his former captive and ascends into the spaceship in the final scene. They tearfully bid each other a final goodbye.
