Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Streets of Fire" has a subtitle. What is it?

Answer: A Rock and Roll Fable

Fables are usually used to teach a lesson and while this movie does not teach any lessons, one senses while watching this movie that all the characters represent something. Whether it works as a fable is questionable but it is fun. One critic described the movie as "Soldier Boy saves Teen Angel from Leader of the Pack" which would make it more of an allegory than a fable.
2. Michael Pare stars in "Streets of Fire" as Tom Cody, the "good guy", a recently discharged soldier, summoned home to rescue his ex-girlfriend Ellen Aim, who has been kidnapped by a motorcycle gang. How does Tom's sister, Reba, get in touch with him?

Answer: telegraph

Reba sends a telegraph to him as shown during the opening credits sequence. The use of the telegraph is just one of many devices used in this movie to create an odd sense of time. Even in 1984 when the movie was released, the use of Western Union's telegraph service was in serious decline. Many present day viewers may not even know what that form of communications is.

Micheal Pare went on to star in "Eddie and the Cruisers" and its sequel. He has done a lot of movie and TV work, but is hardly a household name. That is unfortunate, as he is a fine actor.
3. Diane Lane stars in "Streets of Fire" as Ellen Aim, the lead singer of a rock band. She is kidnapped during a benefit concert by the leader of a motorcycle gang. What is the name of her band?

Answer: Ellen Aim and the Attackers

Posters announcing "Ellen Aim and The Attackers" are prominent during the opening minutes of the movie and they are also announced on the marquee of the theater (in beautiful flashing neon) where they are performing. According to imdb.com, "The Attackers" are the actual band for Laurie Sargent, the singer who provides the voice for Ellen Aim in concert. All of the musicians we see on stage are actors providing action and lip-syncing to the studio music.

Diane Lane was only 19 when she made this movie. Diane Lane was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for "Unfaithful" in 2002.
4. Amy Madigan plays McCoy, a tough talking, hard drinking, punch throwing, trigger happy, former soldier who helps Cody save Ellen Aim from the motorcycle gang in "Streets of Fire". Where do McCoy and Cody meet?

Answer: In an unnamed bar

Cody goes to the bar to kill some time after returning home at Reba's request. McCoy is there and asks Clyde the Bartender for another drink. McCoy punches out Clyde (played by Bill Paxton in an early role) when he refuses to serve her any more alcohol. She steals a bottle of tequila for Cody and they leave the bar together. When he thinks he is going to "get lucky", she tells him "You ain't my type."

Amy Madigan was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in "Twice in a Lifetime" (1986) but is probably best known for playing Kevin Costner's very patient wife in "Field of Dreams". She is married to actor Ed Harris.
5. Rick Moranis plays Ellen's slimy business manager in "Streets of Fire", though he is better known for his comedic roles than for dramatic roles like this one. What is the name of his character?

Answer: Billy Fish

The name is somehow appropriate as Billy is both very cold and definitely slimy. Billy cares about Ellen on a superficial emotional level, but ultimately sees her as little more than a way to get rich. The conflict between Billy Fish and Tom Cody seems to represent the conflict between the spirit of rebellious youth and the spirit of capitalism, but then again, I may be reading too much into it.

This is a rare dramatic role for Rick Moranis. He is best known for "Ghostbusters", "Spaceballs", "Parenthood" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids".
6. Willem Dafoe plays Raven Shaddock, the leader of the the motorcycle gang that kidnaps Ellen Aim. What is the name of the motorcycle gang?

Answer: The Bombers

The Bombers are sort of a Hell's Angels gang that appears to have about a 100 members and no visible means of support. They hang out in The Battery in a bar named Torchy's.

"Streets of Fire" is Willem Dafoe's breakout role and his performance as Raven Shaddock, the leader of the motorcycle gang, gives a clear sign of the type of intense performances he would give in future roles. He is a two time Oscar nominee for "Platoon" (1987) and "Shadow of the Vampire" (2001). He played Jesus in Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ". He is known to a new generation of movie goers as Norman Osborn, "The Green Goblin" from the "Spider-Man" movies.
7. The soundtrack for "Streets of Fire" is absolutely great. It includes songs by Stevie Nicks, Bob Seger, Ry Cooder, and Dan Hartman. The opening number and the closing Ellen Aim concert numbers - "Going Nowhere Fast" and "Tonight is What it Means to be Young" - are by an eccentric rock composer known for overblown melodramatic excess in his songs. He is closely associated with Meat Loaf. Who is this rock composer?

Answer: Jim Steinman

These two concert sequences came to have a great influence on the evolution of music video and MTV. Steinman's overblown musical style is perfect for the larger-than-life style of the movie.

Jim Steinman has written songs that became hits for Meat Loaf, Air Supply, Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow, Celine Dion, Bonny Tyler, and many others. If you ever hear his own album, "Bad for Good", you will immediately realize why other people sing his music. Steinman has been working on a musical based on Peter Pan called "Neverland" for 30 years.
8. The director of "Streets of Fire" has made movies in a wide variety of genre. These include action in "48 Hours", comedy - "Brewster's Millions" and "Johnny Handsome", and westerns including "Geronimo" and "The Long Riders". Who is he?

Answer: Walter Hill

Hill is also well established as a screenwriter and a producer. He has won several awards for his work, but never an Oscar. His extensive list of credits can be found at imdb.com
9. The setting for "Streets of Fire" is highly stylized and in a undefined time. The opening credits refer to "Another time, another place". The actors make reference to "The Battery", "The Richmond" and "The Bayside". The characters cross town in an elevated railroad. The streets and storefronts are almost gray and without color. In what city is the movie set?

Answer: We never know

The geographical references imply San Francisco. The elevated transit system implies Chicago where some filming was done. The attitudes of people imply New York. The script never says. "Another time, another place".

All the cars used are late '40s and '50s American cars adding to the ambiguous time of the setting.
10. There is a black soul/doo-wop group in the movie that includes future stars Mykelti Williamson (Bubba in "Forrest Gump") and Robert Townsend ("The Five Heartbeats"). What is the name of this singing group?

Answer: The Sorels

The other members of The Sorels included Stoney Jackson, who has done television work for years and Grand Bush, who has played cops in "Die Hard", "License to Kill" and "Lethal Weapon". The Sorels do a great performance (dubbed) of Dan Hartman's classic song, "I can dream about you". All three wrong answers are actual 1950s black groups, the type of which that the Sorels were based on.
