Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the movie opens, the Roosevelt family are sailing on the ocean, but go onshore to do what?

Answer: fight a fire

James (Tim Considine) spots the brush fire and alerts the rest of the family. They break off tree branches and beat out the flames. When they sail back home, all go swimming in the cold water except Eleanor (Greer Garson) who must see to dinner preparations. Afterwards, Franklin (Ralph Bellamy) sits around for a while in his wet trunks, then starts to feel ill.
2. The Roosevelt family rehearses what Shakespearean play to read as an after dinner activity?

Answer: Julius Caeser

There is some dissension amongst the children as to who will play which parts. Eleanor defers to Franklin on all casting decisions. Franklin casts the maid in the title role, himself as Mark Antony, Eleanor plays Portia and James is Brutus. However, they never get to perform when Franklin is suddenly taken ill.
3. Franklin's close friend and political advisor, Louis Howe, arrives quickly when he hears the news of Franklin's illness. Which character actor played Louis?

Answer: Hume Cronyn

Cronyn's scene-stealing performance in this film was not even nominated for an Academy Award. He was only nominated once for supporting actor Oscar in the 1944 movie "The Seventh Cross" but lost that year to Barry Fitzgerald in "Going My Way". Married to fellow actor Jessica Tandy, he appeared in dozens of movies and TV anthology series.

He may be best remembered for his portrayal of senior citizen Joe Finley in "Cocoon" and its sequel.
4. When Franklin is being carried on a stretcher bed to a boat to take him to the mainland he comments that he feels like the ___________________. To what personage does he refer?

Answer: Caliph of Baghdad

Trying to make light of the serious circumstance and diffuse everyone's concerns about his comfort, he compares his method of transportation to that of a wealthy eastern potentate being carried on a litter. Only after a boat ride across the bay to Eastport, Maine, while dodging curious reporters all the way, and he is on the train, is it revealed how stressful the situation was for him.
5. Which member of Franklin's family is always nagging him to quit politics and retire to his estate in Hyde Park, New York?

Answer: his mother, Sara

From the moment she arrives at Campobello and throughout her appearance in the movie, Sara Delano Roosevelt (Ann Shoemaker) strongly urges her son to retire from politics and devote his time to managing the Hyde Park estate. Her position, that she never approved of politics as a respectable career, is made quite clear.

She is constantly at loggerheads with Eleanor and Louis Howe on this matter. Even Franklin argues with her about it: "I have no intention of retiring to Hyde Park and rusticating!" All other members of the Roosevelt family are quite supportive of his choice to remain on the political scene.
6. Which character said, "I have this naive view that you should pursue principles without calculating the consequences."?

Answer: Eleanor Roosevelt

This occurred when Eleanor and Louis were discussing her role in assisting Franklin by giving speeches at ladies clubs and other politically orientated meetings. Louis' reply to her comment is, "You're no politician!"
7. After the Roosevelt family are settled in their home in New York City, Franklin receives several callers. What was the purpose of Mr. Brimmer's visit?

Answer: to discuss Franklin's investing in dirigibles

The energetic Brimmer is played by character actor Lyle Talbot. He continuously paces back and forth wearing squeaky shoes while giving his spiel to Franklin. This annoys Franklin to the point that he snaps at Louis Howe when Howe stands up from the sofa where he had been reclining: "Louis, why ... must you keep pacing up and down?" To which Louis quips, "I'm nervous."
8. Another caller to the Roosevelt home is Mr. Lassiter, with an abrasive request for Franklin. What actor portrayed this bigoted visitor?

Answer: David White

Lassiter, who represents an unnamed organization, asks Franklin to make a public statement that he would not support Al Smith as a Presidential candidate because Smith is a Roman Catholic. Roosevelt's action is to dictate a letter to his secretary, Missy LeHand (Jean Hagen), stating that if no one of the Catholic faith could be considered for President, then neither should they be eligible for any other public office. Lassiter leaves in a huff. David White went on to play Darren Stephens' boss, Larry Tate, in the long-running TV sitcom "Bewitched" (1964-72).
9. What is the famous inspirational poem mentioned in the movie?

Answer: "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley

When it is made public that Franklin's favorite poem is "Invictus", he receives many copies of it from his admirers. In one scene, Louis starts to read it in a comically exaggerated European accent, but gradually reverts to reading it seriously as it becomes a tribute to Franklin.
10. Dore Schary wrote the original story and also the screenplay for this film, but does he appear in it?

Answer: yes

Schary has a cameo role as the chairman of the Connecticut delegation at the Democratic convention just before Roosevelt makes the nominating speech for Al Smith (Alan Bunce). Schary also had another uncredited role in the movie "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer" (1947). However, he was best known as a writer and producer.
