"Boogie Nights" is a 1997 film starring Mark Wahlberg as Eddie Adams. Eddie is a loser who finds success overnight as an adult film star named Dirk Diggler. Initially, Dirk lives a lavish lifestyle but quickly falls into drug use and other vices. Julianne Moore plays Amber Waves, Dirk's costar. Amber is a mother but loses her child because she is deemed an unfit mother due to her career. She acts similar to a mother-like role model to the other actors off set. Burt Reynolds plays Jack Horner, the filmmaker who discovers Eddie/Dirk.

Julianne Moore was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in this film but lost to Kim Basinger for "L.A. Confidential".

In this 2013 adaptation of the Stephen King novel "Carrie", Carrie is played by Chloe Grace Moretz and her mother Margaret is played by Julianne Moore. Margaret is a religious fanatic who raised her daughter in such away that Carrie grew up to be reserved and uninformed about life issues. Carrie is humiliated in the gym shower by bully Chris (Portia Doubleday) who seeks revenge against Carrie for getting her suspended. Carrie discovers she has the power to move objects with her mind. Carrie goes to the prom with Tommy (Ansel Elgort) against her mother's wishes but Carrie has used her powers to lock Margaret in the closet so she can go to the prom. Chris gets her revenge on Carrie at the prom by dumping a bucket of pigs blood on her. This sends Carrie into a rage and she begins using her powers for evil and kills several of her classmates.
4. Cathy Whitaker, whose husband is undergoing gay conversion therapy

Answer: Far from Heaven

"Far from Heaven" is a 2002 film starring Julianne Moore as Cathy Whitaker and Dennis Quaid as her husband Frank. The film is set in the 1950s when homosexuality was still very much taboo. Frank is arrested one night for attending underground gay clubs but he tells Cathy it was a mistake. However, Cathy catches Frank having an affair with a man and he admits to her that he has a problem and tries to cure it by undergoing conversion therapy (which is now largely debunked). However, it does little to help their marriage.

Julianne Moore was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her role in this film but lost to Nicole Kidman for "The Hours", a film for which Moore was also nominated in the Supporting Actress category.
5. Mrs. Howland, who has early onset Alzheimer's Disease

Answer: Still Alice

"Still Alice" is a 2014 film starring Julianne Moore as Alice Howland. Alice is a college professor known for her intelligence but she stumbles during a presentation and discovers she has early onset Alzheimer's Disease. Her memory quickly deteriorates and she sometimes does not recognize her own children. Her memory exercises stop working. This puts a considerable strain on her marriage to John (Alec Baldwin) who has difficulty seeing his wife in such a state. Their children also struggle to deal with the reality and with the fact that they may develop the disease when they are older.

Julianne Moore won a Best Actress Oscar for her role in this film in 2015.
6. Sarah Miles, who starts a relationship with a writer during World War II

Answer: The End of the Affair

In this 1999 film, Ralph Fiennes stars as Maurice Bendrix, a young novelist during World War II. Maurice meets Sarah Miles (Julianne Moore) and the two have an affair. However it ends by the war's end but starts up again when they reunite. Sarah's husband Henry (Stephen Rea) tells Maurice he thinks his wife is having an affair (not knowing Maurice is the other man). Maurice, who is obsessed with Sarah, has her followed mainly because he wants to know why she ended their affair years before.

7. Alma Coin, leader of District 13

Julianne Moore first played Alma Coin in the third "Hunger Games" film "Mockingjay: Part 1". Coin is the leader of District 13, where refugees from the rest of Panem have fled to after the events of the second film. Coin is a very strict and austere leader who uses security and safety as justifications for her actions.

She frequently clashes with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) who sees few differences between Coin and Panem's murderous dictator President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Katniss is primarily concerned with rescuing Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) from Snow and blames Coin for some the events that led to Peeta's endangerment. Coin and Katniss frequently disagree on how best to defeat to Snow.
8. Audrey Woods, a divorce lawyer

Answer: Laws of Attraction

"Laws of Attraction" is a 2004 romantic comedy starring Julianne Moore as Audrey Woods and Pierce Brosnan as Daniel Rafferty. Audrey and Daniel are both divorce attorneys who are total opposites, both inside and outside the courtroom. They often find themselves on opposites sides of divorce court.

In one case, they representing different spouses and travel to Ireland for work where they have a fling and accidentally marry.

"Surviving Picasso" is a 1996 film that tells the life of painter Pablo Picasso, played by Anthony Hopkins, as he spends World War II in Paris. Natascha McElhone plays Francoise Gilot, a French woman and aspiring painter who meets Picasso and spends time with him.

She often hears of Picasso's many complaints about various things, including the time his house was broken into and he was upset no one stole his painting. Julianne Moore plays Dora Maar, the real life muse and lover of Picasso whom he abused. Dora Maar was an accomplished artist and photographer in her own right.

"The Hours" is a 2002 film that is set at three different times. In 1921, author Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) is writing her famous novel "Mrs. Dalloway" as she battles depression and contemplates suicide. In 1951, Laura Brown (Julianne Moore) is a bored housewife who reads "Mrs. Dalloway" which seemingly gives her ideas of suicide. In 2001, Clarissa Vaughn (Meryl Streep) acts just like the character Mrs. Dalloway and is throwing a party for her AIDS-afflicted former lover Richard (Ed Harris). All three women at some point battle depression and their lives seems to mimic one another's.

Julianne Moore was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in this film but lost to Catherine Zeta-Jones for "Chicago".
