Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who plays the title character, Barry McKenzie, in both "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie" and its sequel, "Barry McKenzie Holds His Own"?

Answer: Barry Crocker

Barry Crocker was born November 4, 1935 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, and has had a long and successful career as an actor, singer, and comedian. "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie" was based on a comic strip by Barry Humphries. The tall, strong-jawed Crocker was thought to resemble the character in the comic strip.
2. In addition to the unforgettable Barry McKenzie, what other Australian icon made his/her movie debut in "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie"?

Answer: Dame Edna Everage

Dame Edna Everage (played by Barry Humphries) may be the most famous Australian in history. It is important to note that when the film begins, she is simply Auntie Edna, having not yet acquired her honorific title. Star of stage, screen, and television, the multi-talented Dame Edna has advanced from superstar status to become the world's first "gigastar". On intimate terms with the greats of the entertainment industry and world leaders alike, Dame Edna has hosted many television programs, including "The Dame Edna Experience", and has authored many books, including her autobiography, "My Gorgeous Life".

She announced her retirement in 2012, but has returned several times since due to demands of her adoring fans.
3. "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie" begins as Barry and his aunt prepare to leave Australia to go to Britain. What event was the cause of their departure?

Answer: The death of Barry's father

Immediately following his father's death, the lawyer reads the will, which states: "And to you, Barrington Bradman Bing McKenzie, I bequeath the sum of $2,000, on the condition that you leave for the United Kingdom immediately, to further the cultural and intellectual traditions of the McKenzie dynasty." His Aunt Edna decides to accompany Barry on his trip.
4. Barry's problems begin when he arrives at customs at Heathrow Airport. In addition to having to pay duty on a number of items purchased in Hong Kong on his way to London, what else happens to Barry at the airport?

Answer: Barry's beer is confiscated.

Barry's suitcase is opened by the customs official, and is shown to contain several cases of Foster's Lager, which is immediately confiscated, much to Barry's chagrin.
5. What does Barry usually call Britons?

Answer: Pommies

We hear Barry use this term when he calls the man collecting duties at customs a "hungry Pommy". He uses this phrase, or some variation of it, constantly throughout the film. It is also written on his t-shirt. Pommy (or Pom) is a mildly derogatory Australian term for a citizen of the United Kingdom, particularly the English.

There is a great deal of controversy over the origin of the term; etymologists say it comes from "pomegranate" by way of rhyming slang for immigrant. But folk legend says it is derived from "Prisoner Of [Her] Majesty" or "Prisoner Of Mother England." Barry has a rather low opinion of Pommies in general, but his prejudice is somewhat justified, as everywhere he goes in London he is constantly being insulted, cheated, and ripped off by the locals.
6. Barry eventually makes his way to Earl's Court, where he meets his old friend, Curly. It is here that we learn Barry's nickname. What is it?

Answer: Bazza

All of our hero's mates call him Bazza. Virtually the only person who calls him Barry is Auntie Edna. Bazza is a common nickname for Barry in Australia.
7. Barry goes with Curly to a bar, where he is spotted by a talent scout who hires him to make a commercial for what product?

Answer: Cigarettes

Barry manages to complete the commercial, for High Camp cigarettes, in only 199 takes. His subsequent romantic rendezvous with his co-star does not turn out as well.
8. Barry and Aunt Edna next go to visit an upper-class English family, the Gorts. Unknown to Barry and Aunt Edna, the Gorts have a secret plan to do what?

Answer: Force Barry to marry their daughter

Apparently overestimating the size of Barry's inheritance, the Gorts arrange for Barry to take their daughter, Sarah, to a dance, hoping that he will seduce her so they can force him to marry her. When they find out that Barry has spent the entire evening drinking beer with his Australian friends, there is a nasty row.
9. Barry escapes from the Gorts, and hitches a ride back to London with a hippie folk music band called The Disciples. On the way there, he sings them a traditional Australian folk song called what?

Answer: The One-Eyed Trouser Snake

Impressed with Barry's singing, The Disciples plan to use Barry's talents to their advantage. They trick him into signing an iron-clad contract relinquishing all his rights to his music. When Barry performs later at a nightclub, a music impresario buys Barry's contract, but a fight erupts and Barry wakes up in the hospital.
10. Barry eventually finds his way home, where Curly and Aunt Edna are relieved to see that he has returned. He meets an old childhood acquaintance named Gaylene, who now goes by the name of Lesley. While they are having a beer in a local pub, Barry goes to the restroom, where a policeman mistakes him for what?

Answer: A sexual pervert

It is not quite clear why the policeman accosts Barry, but our hero has mistakenly grabbed his Auntie Edna's QANTAS shoulder bag instead of his own, and it is full of women's clothing. Barry and Lesley have to flee the bar, with the police officer in hot pursuit.
11. While in an underground tube station, Barry and Lesley just happen to run into Lesley's ex-husband, who is a television producer making a live program about Australians living in London, which is due to air that very night. While Barry is a guest on the program, what unfortunate event occurs?

Answer: Barry suffers what might be called a "wardrobe malfunction".

While being interviewed by Joan Bakewell, he is asked what he thinks of English girls. Barry responds frankly, but in his usual incomprehensible Australian dialect. When Ms. Bakewell responds, "I don't quite see your point," an enthusiastic Barry stands up in his chair, opens a can of Foster's - and drops his pants. He evidently misunderstood Ms. Bakewell's comment.
12. Shortly after Barry's onscreen faux pas, a fire breaks out when a lamp is knocked over. The Australians, however, manage to extinguish the fire by what method?

Answer: They urinate on it.

By forming a sort of bucket brigade which passes cans of Foster's Lager to the volunteer firefighters, the Australians manage to quench the flames that threaten to engulf the studio. "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie" has frequent references to urination and vomiting, activities necessitated by Australians' consumption of massive quantities of beer.
13. What is the upshot of Barry's television exposure?

Answer: He is offered his own television series by the BBC.

Mistaking Barry's antics for the actions of "a distinguished Australian intellectual", the BBC is prepared to give him his own television program. The idea is quashed, however, by Auntie Edna, who is embarrassed by her nephew, and demands that he return to Australia.

The last line in the film, spoken by Barry on the airplane on his way home, is: "You know, Auntie, in a funny kind of way, I was just starting to like the Poms."
14. What Australian product is featured prominently in this film?

Answer: Foster's Lager

Nearly every scene in the movie shows Barry and his friends consuming massive quantities of Foster's Lager. "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie" is credited with greatly increasing the popularity of this beer, which was almost unknown outside of Australia before its release. Foster's later ran an ad campaign starring Paul Hogan which claimed "Foster's - Australian for beer".
15. Do the closing credits offer any hint that a sequel to this film was being planned?

Answer: No

Although not planned at the time "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie" was released, the unexpected popularity of the film made a sequel almost inevitable. Two years later, the equally funny and outrageous "Barry McKenzie Holds His Own" appeared, featuring many of the same characters and actors.

A third film was considered, which would have had Barry traveling to New York and fighting drug smugglers, but it was never made. Barry Humphries claims this idea was the inspiration for the incredibly popular "Crocodile Dundee". Paul Hogan had been offered the role of of Curly in the first movie, but turned it down, prompting producer Phillip Adams to speculate that, "I suspect he was concerned over his ability to work with professional actors."
