Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie was based off of a play of the same title. Who wrote the play?

Answer: Arthur Miller

It was written in 1953 as a response to McCarthyism after Miller was blacklisted.
2. Who wrote the screenplay?

Answer: Arthur Miller

The movie premiered in 1996. The actor who played the protagonist John Proctor, Daniel Day-Lewis, married Miller's daughter Rebecca afterwards.
3. Who built the house which the character John Proctor lived in?

Answer: Daniel Day-Lewis

Day-Lewis had joined a woodworker's club. He rode to the set on a horse instead of a golf cart, which the rest of the cast rode upon.
4. True or false: According to the actual events, Betty's mother was dead and buried.

Answer: False

This was an inaccuracy in both the film and the play, Betty Parris' mother was very much alive at the time and died 4 years after the events.
5. According to Abigail, why was she discharged from Goody Proctor's service?

Answer: Because she refused to be her slave

Judge Danforth and Reverend Parris both asked this question. When Elizabeth Proctor was asked if Abigail was slovenly or lazy, she refused to tell the truth ans simply said that she didn't please her and her husband.
6. What was the name of the Putnam's daughter in the real, historical events?

Answer: Ann

Another inaccuracy in the portrayals - the daughter was given the name Ruth in the movie and the play to distinguish her from her mother, who was also named Ann.
7. How many pounds did Abigail steal before running away?

Answer: 31

It was said quite clearly after she ran away. In real life, no one knows what happened to Abigail, but two of my friends claim to have found her grave near the Salem Wax Museum..
8. How old was Abigail in the play and the movie?

Answer: 17

In reality, she was 11. Miller made the character older in order to add to the storyline.
9. Which is accurate when it comes to the cause of Giles Corey's execution, the film or the play?

Answer: Play

According to http://www.ogram.org/17thc/fact-fiction.shtml, "Giles Corey was not executed for refusing to name a witness, as portrayed in the movie. The play is accurate: he was accused of witchcraft, and refused to enter a plea, which held up the proceedings, since the law of the time required that the accused enter a plea.

He was pressed to death with stones, but the method was used to try to force him to enter a plea so that his trial could proceed. Corey probably realized that if he was tried at all, he would be executed, and his children would be disinherited. (Interestingly, Miller wrote both the play and the screenplay... Who knows why he changed it to a less-accurate explanation for his punishment and execution?) "
10. Who made the pewter candlesticks for the church?

Answer: Francis Nurse

Proctor nailed the roof upon the church and hung the door, but it was Francis Nurse who made the candlesticks.
11. Where was the movie filmed?

Answer: Hog Island

Hog Island is a small Massachusetts island that used to be a bird sanctuary. The other three are vital towns in the Trials. Danvers was originally the Salem Farms, and Andover had more accusations than Salem!
12. Who were the judges in the movie?

Answer: Samuel Sewall, Thomas Danforth, John Hathorne

Only these three were in the movie, but all of these judges and more were in the real events. Sewall was played by George Gaynes, Danforth was played by Paul Scofield, and Hathorne played by Robert Breuler.
13. Which actress won the most awards as a result of this movie?

Answer: Joan Allen

She won the SEFCA Award in 1997 for Best Supporting Actress and the BFCA Award in 1997 for Best Supporting Actress. She was also nominated for the same role to win other awards.
14. Finish the quote: "Elizabeth, your justice would freeze _______."

Answer: Beer

Said by John Proctor to Elizabeth.
15. How much did the film make in its opening weekend?

Answer: $62,995 (US)

Not much, eh? Thank you for taking my quiz!
