Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What major historical event occurred at the beginning of the film?

Answer: Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba

The Bay of Pigs invasion occurred in 1968 in Cuba. It ended up failing miserably, partly because the Cubans (with Soviet backing) were aware of the plans, so they were expecting the invasion. Somewhere there had been a leak regarding the plans.
2. What secret society did Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) join at Yale?

Answer: Skull and Bones

Edward was invited to join Skull and Bones, and accepted. He went along with the initiation, but almost left at one point because he was repulsed by some of the upper classmen's behavior during hazing. Some famous real life members of this society include U.S. presidents, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush.
3. When Edward was out dancing with Laura (Tammy Blanchard), the live music was interrupted for an important announcement. What was this announcement?

Answer: England and France had declared war on Germany.

On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. And on September 3, the United Kingdom, France and Australia declared war on Germany. This sort of announcement would have probably put a damper on the festive mood.
4. During a conversation, British Intelligence Officer Arch Cummings (Billy Crudup) told Edward that to be an exceptional intelligence officer, you must have a steady mind, unwavering sense of belief in what you're doing, and what else?

Answer: "Be a hopeless romantic."

Edward and Cummings seemed to have a good friendship together. They both appeared to be aiding their governments for the same purposes. Unfortunately, we later realize that Cummings was aiding more than just his government.
5. What was the codename that the Soviets had for Edward?

Answer: Mother

The Soviets respected Edward, and realized how he was behind most of the intelligence both in the U.S. and in England, while he was working there. His Soviet counterpart was codenamed "Ulysses", and he considered Edward to be a "formidable adversary".
6. How did Edward realize his German translator was actually a spy?

Answer: She could hear fine without her hearing aid.

On one occasion when Edward was with the German translator, he realized that she could hear him fine when she was not wearing the aid. He realized that the Soviets had been able to hear everything that she had translated for Edward. She was shot, and "Ulysses" found her hearing aid in his tea pot.
7. Edward had been away from his wife, Clover (Angelina Jolie), and his son, Edward Jr., for six years. When he returned, what was one of the things that had changed?

Answer: Clover was going by the name Margaret.

Besides going by Margaret, instead of Clover, she also wanted them to sleep in separate beds in separate rooms, until they were used to each other again. He was practically a stranger to her after six years apart.
8. The CIA sabotaged coffee plantations in Cuba by dropping something by plane. What did the CIA drop?

Answer: Grasshoppers

The CIA did not want to see the Cuban government have any success. They also knew that the Soviets were behind the government, because Edward saw KGB agent "Ulysses" during a press conference. So while their efforts were patriotic, they were probably also personal for Edward.
9. What did Clover receive in the mail while at Deer Island?

Answer: Photos of Edward with Laura

Margaret "Clover" was very upset when she received the photos. She went to the main meeting hall and started shouting at Edward, in front of everybody in attendance. The photos were obviously sent by "Ulysses" to get at Edward personally.
10. Who was responsible for the leak to the Soviets regarding the Bay of Pigs?

Answer: Edward's son, Edward Jr.

While at Deer Island, Edward Jr. had overheard his father speaking with some men outside regarding plans at the Bay of Pigs. In the Congo, he fell in love with an African woman, and he ended up telling her about what he'd overheard. Unfortunately she was working with the Soviets, although she did fall in love with Edward Jr.

The Soviets tried to use the fact that Edward Jr. was the leak against Edward, but Edward wasn't willing to work for them just to prevent that being known. In other words, he'd given up his son over his country.

Edward Wilson is largely based on real-life CIA counter-intelligence agent James Jesus Angleton.

It was a long, but enjoyable movie, at least for me. Not your typical spy movie (I'm sure people wanted something more like "Casino Royale" (2006)), but nevertheless enjoyable.
