"The Gray Man" opens in the year 2003 with the character Six imprisoned in the state of Florida for the murder of his father who was physically assaulting his brother. Fitzroy tries to bond with Six by telling him that he would have done the same thing if his brother was being assaulted. Fitzroy then explains to Six that he can be a part of the CIA's Sierra program.

The New Year's Eve party at a club in Bangkok depicted in "The Gray Man" was an extravagant event. Six is tasked with assassinating a man called Dining Car who is located several floors above Six. Realizing that there would be collateral damage, Six aborts the mission and lies stating that his gun jammed.

He then creates a distraction and takes on his target in direct combat. As he is dying, Six's target tells him that he was a member of the same program as Six and his codename was Sierra Four. Four gives Six a necklace with a SSD card and tells him that there is corruption in the Sierra program.

Similar to many films involving government operatives, "The Gray Man" features a corrupt official who takes bribes, order unauthorized hits and operates outside of protocol. In "The Gray Man" this character is named Carmichael and he was played by Regé-Jean Page who had previously gained fame for appearing on the hit Netflix show "Bridgerton" in which he played the part of Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings.

Six and the young girl Claire get off to a rocky start with both of them trying to set boundaries. Throughout the film Six is often seen chewing gum, possibly as a calming mechanism. However, Claire tells Six that chewing gum is not allowed in her house and Six reluctantly agrees. The two become closer after Six has to rush Claire to the hospital for a medical condition that she has.

The extraction team is called by Fitzroy with the intention of delivering Six to Fitzroy so they can plot how to expose Carmichael's nefariousness. Unfortunately, Carmichael enlists an erratic former CIA operative named Lloyd Hansen who forces Fitzroy to give the order to kill Six.

The extraction team picks up Six in a large cargo plane outside the city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. While the plane is airborne, Six realizes that the extraction team is going to kill him and after some fighting the plane is destroyed and Six has to use a parachute to escape.

Answer: Ecuador

Laslzo Sosa is an eccentric character who uses the code 'dry cleaning' to provide weapons, cash and passports to operatives. Sosa has dozens of countries' passports readily available to forge and since Six didn't have a preference and just wanted him to work quickly, Sosa decides to use one from Ecuador. Eventually Sosa betrays Six by capturing him via a trapdoor in the hopes that he will be paid a sizable bounty.

Answer: Who you send in because you can't officially send anyone else.

The CIA Sierra program is made up of 'gray men' that are utilized by the CIA but not necessarily openly on payroll or mission reports. These gray men are assassins that can utilize questionable methods and are usually sent as a last resort when leaders can't officially send anyone else to complete the mission.

In addition to "The Gray Man", Mark Greaney wrote 10 other novels in the series from 2010 to 2020.

Margaret Cahill was played by Alfre Woodard and she was the only person that Six trusted to analyze the SSD card. Cahill was formerly the CIA London bureau chief and she had worked with Six on several missions. While in Prague, Cahill tells Six that she has cancer and only has a few months to live. Unsurprisingly, while Six is at Cahill's house in Prague it is attacked by Carmichael and Hansen's men.

Answer: Pacemaker

From Six's time being Claire's bodyguard he knew that she had a pacemaker to help regulate her heart. After Hansen and his men kidnap Claire, Six gains access to a hospital where he searches a database to find out that Claire and her implanted pacemaker are in Croatia.

Answer: Silver Bird

Knowing that the government agents watching over Claire are loyal to Carmichael and Brewer, Six undergoes a rescue mission. He writes a note telling Claire to play the song "Silver Bird" with her headphones on so she doesn't have to hear what is going on. Six eventually neutralizes those guarding Claire and the two escape as the film closes.

The song "Silver Bird" was released by Mark Lindsay in 1970 and it reached #25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
