The character of Willard Decker was originally meant to fill the role of the first officer in the planned and discarded television series "Star Trek: Phase II". He was the son of Commodore Matt Decker, who passed away in the "TOS" episode "The Doomsday Machine".

In taking over the command of the Enterprise, Decker was subsequently demoted both in rank (to Commander) and position (to first officer) in the film.

Answer: Mark Lenard

Mark Lenard also played the role of Sarek, Spock's father, and reprised this role in an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as well. This was the first time that Klingons had been seen with a ridged forehead and speaking in their own dialect. Previously, Klingons appeared to be more humanoid with regular foreheads and spoke English.

An explanation as to the difference in appearance was given in "Star Trek: Enterprise".

Kirk was carrying a book when he entered the Kobyashi Maru scenario at the start of the film. After leaving the simulator, he met Spock and thanked him for his gift and read "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" from it.

Commander Pavel Chekov's role in "Star Trek II" provided a famous gaffe in the "Star Trek" timeline, as Khan stated that he remembered Chekov from the Enterprise crew, when in fact Chekov had not yet joined the show at the time of the first-season episode "Space Seed" where Khan made his first appearance.

Scotty was standing behind Kirk and Chekov in the torpedo room and started to play "Amazing Grace" after Kirk finished the eulogy. Spock's body was then fired into space where it landed on Genesis.

"Amazing Grace" was written in the 18th Century by John Newton in the Buckinghamshire town of Olney.

USS Excelsior NX-2000 was a prototype starship that was going to be testing a new transwarp drive system. Captain Styles was to be in command of Excelsior for those tests, however the ship was unexpectedly pressed into service to prevent the Enterprise from going to the Genesis planet. Unfortunately, Scotty had sabotaged the system, and so Excelsior was unable to follow.

USS Reliant was the ship in "Star Trek II". USS Kelvin featured in the 2009 movie "Star Trek". USS Hood appeared at various times on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" TV series.

On arrival at Genesis, Captain Esteban instructrd the communications officer to advise Starfleet of Grissom's arrival. After Saavik and David beamed down to the surface of Genesis, USS Grissom was destroyed by Kruge's bird of prey.

The Pon Farr is the 7-year mating cycle that Vulcans experience. Kolinahr is the ceremony to purge all vestiges of emotion, and is also the name of the discipline that maintains that purging. Arei'mnu is the actual term used that means a purge of emotion, as used in the greater Kolinahr ritual.
