Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With the looming threat of a mysterious cloud approaching Earth and destroying everything in its path, Admiral Kirk was recalled from his role as Starfleet Chief of Operations and assigned the captaincy of the Enterprise. Whose place did Kirk usurp?

Answer: Captain Willard Decker

The character of Willard Decker was originally meant to fill the role of the first officer in the planned and discarded television series "Star Trek: Phase II". He was the son of Commodore Matt Decker, who passed away in the "TOS" episode "The Doomsday Machine".

In taking over the command of the Enterprise, Decker was subsequently demoted both in rank (to Commander) and position (to first officer) in the film.

2. At the beginning of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", three Klingon vessels were shown approaching V'Ger. Which actor (who had a more famous role in both the TV series and subsequent movies) played the Klingon captain?

Answer: Mark Lenard

Mark Lenard also played the role of Sarek, Spock's father, and reprised this role in an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as well. This was the first time that Klingons had been seen with a ridged forehead and speaking in their own dialect. Previously, Klingons appeared to be more humanoid with regular foreheads and spoke English.

An explanation as to the difference in appearance was given in "Star Trek: Enterprise".

3. Portrayed as a living machine, V'Ger considered humans to be an infestation of the Enterprise and of Earth. How did the probe Ilia refer to the humans individually?

Answer: Carbon units

Ilia was able to refer to individual humans by their names as well - referring to "Kirk unit", for example. The copy made of Ilia, however, also included her memories, so instead of referring to Decker as "Decker unit" she simply called him "Decker".

4. In "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan", which book did Spock give Kirk for his birthday?

Answer: A Tale Of Two Cities

Kirk was carrying a book when he entered the Kobyashi Maru scenario at the start of the film. After leaving the simulator, he met Spock and thanked him for his gift and read "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" from it.

Despite frequently being referred to as being illegal, Dr McCoy's present to Kirk was a bottle of Romulan Ale.

Question by Daddy19
5. While assessing a planet for suitability for the Genesis project, two members of the USS Reliant crew were captured by Khan; Captain Terrell and what former Enterprise officer?

Answer: Chekov

Commander Pavel Chekov's role in "Star Trek II" provided a famous gaffe in the "Star Trek" timeline, as Khan stated that he remembered Chekov from the Enterprise crew, when in fact Chekov had not yet joined the show at the time of the first-season episode "Space Seed" where Khan made his first appearance.

Question by reedy
6. Which hymn did Scotty play on the bagpipes, as Spock's body was sent into space at the end of "Star Trek II"?

Answer: Amazing Grace

Scotty was standing behind Kirk and Chekov in the torpedo room and started to play "Amazing Grace" after Kirk finished the eulogy. Spock's body was then fired into space where it landed on Genesis.

"Amazing Grace" was written in the 18th Century by John Newton in the Buckinghamshire town of Olney.

Question by Daddy19
7. In "Star Trek III", Kirk and crew stole the Enterprise to retrieve Spock from the Genesis planet. In an attempt to stop them, Starfleet sent USS Excelsior after them. Who was in command of Excelsior?

Answer: Captain Styles

USS Excelsior NX-2000 was a prototype starship that was going to be testing a new transwarp drive system. Captain Styles was to be in command of Excelsior for those tests, however the ship was unexpectedly pressed into service to prevent the Enterprise from going to the Genesis planet. Unfortunately, Scotty had sabotaged the system, and so Excelsior was unable to follow.

Question by Daddy19
8. In "Star Trek III", the Genesis planet had caused controversy so only specific vessels were permitted to go there. Which starship took Lt Saavik and Kirk's son, David, to Genesis?

Answer: USS Grissom

USS Reliant was the ship in "Star Trek II". USS Kelvin featured in the 2009 movie "Star Trek". USS Hood appeared at various times on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" TV series.

On arrival at Genesis, Captain Esteban instructrd the communications officer to advise Starfleet of Grissom's arrival. After Saavik and David beamed down to the surface of Genesis, USS Grissom was destroyed by Kruge's bird of prey.

Question by Daddy19
9. The actor chosen to play Kruge, the Klingon captain, was known for his roles in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Taxi". Who was it?

Answer: Christopher Lloyd

Lloyd played psychiatric patient Max Taber in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in his first major motion picture role. A recurring spot as Reverend Jim "Iggy" Ignatowski in "Taxi" made a name for him, and he is likely best known as "Doc" Emmett Brown from the "Back to the Future" trilogy.

Question by reedy
10. What was the name of the ceremony that reunited Spock with his katra in "Star Trek III"?

Answer: Fal Tor Pan

After the Fal Tor Pan ceremony, Spock showed a promising sign of a successful reintegration of his katra when he remembered Kirk's first name.

The Pon Farr is the 7-year mating cycle that Vulcans experience. Kolinahr is the ceremony to purge all vestiges of emotion, and is also the name of the discipline that maintains that purging. Arei'mnu is the actual term used that means a purge of emotion, as used in the greater Kolinahr ritual.
