Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After finding the plank in the first Resolute desk, Ben, Riley and Abigail were chased through the city by Mitch Wilkinson, in "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" (2007). Ben finally agreed to give Wilkinson the plank, but instead of handing it to Wilkinson's man, Ben tossed the plank off of a bridge. In what city did this happen?

Answer: London

Ben and Abigail retrieved the first plank from Buckingham Palace, where one of the Resolute desks was located. Since they had no camera to take a photo of the plank, Ben got one by holding the plank up as he ran a stoplight. With Wilkinson driving across the bridge beside him, Ben held the plank out to Daniel, but then tossed it over the car and into the water. Daniel got Mitch to stop the car, and then jumped off the bridge to retrieve the plank. Filming of the scene took place on Southwark Bridge, one of many which span the Thames.
2. The stories told in "The Bridge on the River Kwai", "A Bridge Too Far" and "The Bridge at Remagen", all took place during WWII.

Answer: True

"The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957), a Best Picture Oscar winner, told of prisoners in a Japanese POW camp being forced to construct a bridge for the enemy. "A Bridge Too Far" (1977) was about the Allied plan, called Operation Market Garden, to capture several bridges in Germany and the Netherlands in 1944.

The cast included Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Robert Redford and many other stars. "The Bridge at Remagen" (1969) starred George Segal, Robert Vaughan and Ben Gazzara. It told of the capture of the Ludendorff Bridge by US soldiers towards the end of the war.
3. In "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", which member of the fellowship was lost when the group crossed the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, on their way out of Moria?

Answer: Gandalf

Finding Moria overrun by Orcs, the group headed for the Eastern Gate, with a Balrog in pursuit. Gandalf was the last across the bridge (also known as Durin's Bridge), and remained there, preventing the Balrog from passing. Gandalf destroyed the bridge, causing the Balrog to fall.

Unfortunately, the Balrog's whip came up and caught Gandalf's leg, pulling him into the abyss. After Gandalf defeated the Balrog, he returned as Gandalf the White, but that was in the next movie. At that point in "Fellowship", the rest of the group thought Gandalf was dead. Two sequels followed "Fellowship", "The Two Towers" (2002) and "The Return of the King" (2003). Gandalf was played by Ian McKellan, who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for "The Fellowship of the Ring".
4. The protagonist couple in "Beetlejuice" had an unfortunate bridge experience; the furniture movers in "Funny Farm" had an interesting, more humorous one. What type of bridge did both of these scenes have in common?

Answer: Covered bridge

In "Beetlejuice" (1988), Barbara and Adam were on their way back home when a dog caused them to swerve, crashing through the side of the bridge. They looked back to see the dog standing on a plank which was the only thing keeping them from going over. When the dog jumped off, their car plunged to the water below, killing them. The exteriors were filmed in East Corinth, Vermont; the covering for the bridge was constructed just for the movie.

The Triboro Movers in "Funny Farm" (1988) were having a hard time finding the Farmer's house, so when they were told about a shortcut which involved a bridge, they decided to go that way. Upon seeing the covered bridge, Mickey told Crocker that it wasn't a bridge, it was termites holding hands. Crocker told him to have a little faith in the craftsmanship of their forefathers, and they started through. The bridge started creaking and moaning as they inched forward, and then a tire went through the bridge deck. Crocker threw it in reverse and they got out just before the bridge collapsed. As Crocker later told Andy, "a bridge nearly killed us". The scenes were filmed in Weathersfield, Vermont, at the Upper Falls Covered Bridge (or Downers Bridge), which crosses the Black River.
5. "Stand by Me" had a memorable bridge scene during the boys' journey to find Ray Brower's body. What happened during the scene?

Answer: A train came while the boys were walking across the bridge.

Vern questioned when the next train was due, but Teddy insisted they should cross the train bridge rather than go five miles out of their way to cross at the Route 136 bridge. The others were skeptical, but followed Teddy after he started across. Part of the way across, Gordie noticed that a train was coming.

He and Vern barely made it to the other side and had to jump at the last minute so the train wouldn't hit them. Ironically, the four friends were looking for the body of a boy who had been hit by a train. River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell and Wil Wheaton played Chris, Teddy, Vern and Gordie, in Rob Reiner's 1986 movie.

The scenes were filmed at the Lake Britton Bridge in Burney, California.
6. A man and a woman, who were being pursued by bad guys, arrived at a gorge with nothing to cross it but an old dilapidated rope bridge. The man thought the bridge useless and prepared to fight the bad guys (while muttering to himself about bad career choices), while the woman started hesitantly across the bridge. She nearly fell when some boards broke, but the woman grabbed a vine and ended up swinging safely across the gorge. In which movie did this happen?

Answer: Romancing the Stone

Joan Wilder was in Colombia trying to get an important map to her sister, and had enlisted the help of Jack Colton. Jack didn't know why they were being chased, but after he saw Joan swing across the gorge, he figured he could do it as well. His vine landed him just a little short, so he had to do some scrambling to get to safety. "Romancing the Stone" (1984) starred Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas as Joan and Jack.
7. While living in Paris, 13-year-old Lauren fell in love with a French boy named Daniel, much to the dismay of her mother. When Lauren found out her family was moving back to the States, she and Daniel planned to run away together to Venice. In "A Little Romance" (1979), why did they want to go to Venice?

Answer: To kiss under the Bridge of Sighs in a gondola at sunset

In Paris, Lauren and Daniel met Julius (Laurence Olivier) in the park. He told them the legend about lovers who kiss under the Bridge of Sighs at sunset loving each other forever. Faced with being separated, Lauren and Daniel just had to get to Venice, and Julius was willing to help them. Diane Lane (in her film debut) and Thelonious Bernard played Lauren and Daniel.

This charming movie also starred Arthur Hill and Sally Kellerman.
8. In which of these movies did brothers Beau and Jeff Bridges appear together?

Answer: The Fabulous Baker Boys

Jeff and Beau played brothers Jack and Frank Baker, a pair of lounge singers/pianists whose act needed a little updating. Enter Susie Diamond, the female singer who joined them and made them an in-demand act, but ultimately caused trouble between Jack and Frank. Michelle Pfeiffer earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role as Susie. Beau and Jeff are the sons of Lloyd Bridges, known mostly for playing Mike Nelson on the TV show "Sea Hunt", and Steve McCroskey in the "Airplane" movies.
9. Tony (John Travolta) and his friends liked to play around on a nearby bridge after going to their favorite club, 2001 Odyssey, in "Saturday Night Fever" (1977). When they went to the bridge the night of the dance competition, Tony accidentally fell to his death.

Answer: False

The quiet Bobby C (Barry Miller), who usually sat in his car while the other guys horsed around on the bridge, just wanted to be one of the guys. With a pregnant girlfriend and Tony's forgotten promise bringing him down, he joined Tony, Double-J and Joey on the bridge that night, but was much more careless than they were.

A concerned Tony encouraged him to come off the bridge, but Bobby accidentally slipped and fell off. The scenes were filmed on the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.
10. In "A View to a Kill" (1985), James Bond had a climactic fight with villain Max Zorin atop a famous bridge. Which bridge was it?

Answer: Golden Gate Bridge

After his plan to flood Silicon Valley was foiled by James Bond, Zorin left in his airship, grabbing Stacey on the way. James grabbed one of the airship's ropes and held on until Zorin flew over the Golden Gate Bridge. James tied the ship to the bridge, Stacey escaped and Zorin came out to take care of Bond.

After a brief fight, Zorin ended up losing his handhold and slipping off of the bridge to the water below. "A View to a Kill" was one of Roger Moore's outings as James Bond, with the always entertaining Christopher Walken playing Max Zorin.

The Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937 and spans the Golden Gate, where the waters of San Francisco Bay meet the Pacific Ocean.
