Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Who's on First?" was a routine made famous by which comedy duo?

Answer: Abbott and Costello

From the 1945 film "The Naughty Nineties", this routine remains as confusing and funny now as it was then. This is a long play on words between the two comedians and involves a baseball game. Bud Abbott played the straight man while Lou got in the jokes, all without a hitch or a clue that he understood the double meanings. 'Who' was the last name of the player on first base, so the answer to the question/statement "Who's on first?" was "Yes." The conversation got more and more muddled as it went on and has been parodied but never played quite as well as the original.

The two went on to perform this as a solo act after the film's release.
2. In the 1991 "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" film, what was T-800's famous farewell remark?

Answer: "Hasta la vista, baby."

This expression became so popular that many similar new ones were added to modern idioms. The Terminator, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, has been reprogrammed and sent back in time to protect the now ten year old John Connor so that he can fulfill his destiny to save humankind from the planned takeover by machines.
John's mother, Sara (Linda Hamilton), is aided by John (Edward Furlong) and the Terminator in escaping from prison. Since their ally is pitted against a newer and tougher shape-shifting T-1000, who has been sent to destroy John Connor, it proves very difficult to exterminate, and T-800 is forced to sacrifice himself in order to destroy the menace and let the Connors go free. His parting remark is made to them as he sinks to his 'death' with a positive thumbs up.
"Hasta la vista" = See you later.
"Hasta manana" = See you tomorrow.
"Hasta Domingo" = See you Sunday.
"Hasta la pasta" = nonsense
3. What exactly is the quote that was attributed to Mae West in the 1933 film "She Done Him Wrong"?

Answer: "Why don't you come up sometime and see me?"

Mae West, as Lady Lou, says this to Cary Grant, who plays undercover federal agent Captain Cummings. Mae was reknowned for her quick and racy comebacks. She was a very talented woman who not only acted, but wrote several screenplays, including this one. She belonged to the era of the zoftig, brassy, vixen type of femme fatale, and sometimes played opposite W.C. Fields, whose banter she could match very well.
In the later film, "I'm No Angel" her character, Tira, says to Jack Clayton (Cary Grant), "Come up and see me sometime." This may be the source of the two quotes getting mixed up.
4. "Oh, Gary, let's not ask for the moon. We have the sun." is the correct quotation from the 1942 film "Now, Voyager".

Answer: False

"Oh, Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars." is what Bette Davis said to Paul Henreid as they part, after deciding that there are other things more important than their love, such as his love for his daughter. This is the film where Jerry lights two cigarettes and hands one to Charlotte Vale, the mysterious and lovely woman he meets on the ship. This is the typical 'ugly duckling' tale of a young woman who, with the help of a therapist, grows from a timid, plain girl into a charming and attractive woman who has enough self-confidence to defy her mother and live her own life rather than be referred to as 'poor Charlotte'.
5. "One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don't know" is a line by Groucho Marx from the 1930 film "Animal Crackers".

Answer: True

Groucho Marx was notorious for his comebacks and non sequiturs in conversations. He made this aside to the audience in general, simply as a wisecrack, as he was portraying the wild game hunter, Captain Spaulding. The quotation continues, "Then we tried to remove the tusks.

The tusks. That's not so easy to say, tusks...but they were embedded in so firmly we couldn't...of course, in Alabama the Tusk-a-loosa. But, uh, that's entirely ir-elephant..." He and his four brothers made many wacky films as well as stage productions that were extremely popular when burlesque was king. Together they made "A Night at The Opera", "A Day at The Races", "Duck Soup", "The Big Store" and many others. Groucho later hosted the t.v. show "You Bet Your Life!"
6. "We rob banks." is one of the shorter quotes in the AFI's top 100. Which film was it from?

Answer: Bonnie and Clyde

Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were played by Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty in the 1967 film. They were bank robbers and proud of it. In their brief time they enjoyed making big names for themselves regardless of risk, and seemed to do all they could to become infamous, including having provocative photos taken and distributed. If anyone asked what they did, the standard response was, "We rob banks."
At the height of their careers, in 1934, they were ambushed and gunned down by police in Louisiana. It was estimated that about 130 rounds were fired at the pair. She was 23 and he 25.
7. "Badges? We ain't got no badges! We don't need no badges!..." is from which 1948 film?

Answer: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

This is said by 'Goldhat', leader of the banditos, to the three prospectors, when asked to show their badges to prove they were Federales. Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston and Tim Holt played the three men who risked their lives to find a treasure that cost them dearly. The story is one of lust, greed and betrayal. The film was directed by John Huston, son of Walter Huston.
8. "Well, nobody's perfect." is said by which actor from "Some Like it Hot"?

Answer: Joe E. Brown

Ranked #48 on the AFI list of 100 top movie quotes, this is the last line of the 1959 film. Both Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis were among the first men to play women on the silver screen. In disguise as female musicians, the two are running from the mob because they have witnessed a mob hit.

The fast pace and rowdy dialog keep this film moving very quickly, softened in several scenes by Marilyn Monroe's portrayal of Sugar. When Jack Lemmon's fiance, Osgood Fielding III (played by Joe E. Brown), a millionaire, is finally told at the end that his sweetheart is not a woman, he quips, "Well, nobody's perfect." He loves 'her' in spite of everything, and gives his well-known wide grin to show he's completely happy with the way things turned out.
9. "Listen to them. Children of The Night. What music they make." was ranked #83 on AFI's Top 100 Movie Quotes from which 1931 film?

Answer: Dracula

Dracula makes this statement about his children as a general comment, showing how pleased he is with them. Bela Lugosi set the stage for the Dracula character, after which scores of vampire films were made, some sticking to the original script from the novel by Bram Stoker, others deliberately changing the rules.

As children we learned that vampires could not stand sunlight, couldn't touch holy objects or cast a reflection in the mirror, and they were kept away by garlic. As cinema progresses it becomes more complicated and the rules change to suit the times and director. Bela Lugosi, the Hungarian actor, was allegedly buried in his cape, but he was said to have detested the part he played by that time.

While the film was being shot, Lugosi did not speak English and was given his lines phonetically.

His accent was carried through to other versions of the Dracula legend as the vampire usually has an eastern European accent. This is also possibly because the original Count Dracula, Vlad Tepes, was Romanian and would have had a similar accent.
10. "Well, here's another nice mess you've gotten me into!" is said by which comedian in a 1933 film?

Answer: Oliver Hardy

Laurel and Hardy made many films together, Stan Laurel was always the bumbling fool and Oliver Hardy, no wiser but shorter of fuse, was often the irritated heavy.
This quote ranks at #60 on AFI's top 100 list, and is from the film, "Sons of The Desert". The two friends, having faked illness, tell their battle-ax wives that the doctor recommended a Hawaiian cruise, but they plan to attend a convention of The Sons of The Desert instead. Of course, the wives find them out and everything is blamed on Stan. Their comedy was slapstick at its best, without the meanness of the Three Stooges or the rampant confusion of the Keystone Cops. Oliver Hardy often said this line to Stan Laurel in their routines, as Stan was the eternal scapegoat.
The Sons of The Desert is also the name of a large fan club for the comedy team.
