Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jack Johnson sings of using a certain fruit or veggie to flavor a food usually reserved for breakfast: "...Maybe we can sleep in, I'll make you _____ pancakes, pretend like its the weekend now..." Which fruit or veggie goes here?

Answer: banana

The song, aptly named "Banana Pancakes," can be found on Jack Johnson's album "In Between Dreams," released March 1st, 2005.
2. The band 'Presidents of the United States of America' had a hit song, singing of their future plans: "Movin' to the country, I'm gonna eat a lot of ____" Which fruit or veggie goes here?

Answer: peaches

The single "Peaches" was released in February of 1996. The song reached number eight on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Chart (U.S.) and was Grammy nominated in 1996 (even though the band admittedly borrowed lyrics from Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin' Love"). "Peaches" is ripe (pun intended) for parody; both Bill Nye the Science Guy and Weird Al Yankovich released parodies of the song.
3. Gavin DeGraw's "Chariot" has two fruits/veggies in it (or one of each). He sings: "...Your favorite [fruits/veggies] are chocolate-covered ____ and seedless ____..." Which fruits or veggies goes here?

Answer: cherries and watermelon

The single "Chariot" was released in March of 2005 and reached number 17 on the Billboard Pop 100 (U.S.). An interesting note about watermelons: Dr. Livingstone is credited with the plant's discovery in 1857 while exploring Africa, where he observed it growing wild.
4. The American folk/bluegrass song "Rocky Top" speaks of a region just outside of Gatlinburg, TN where farmers may have a hard time growing a specific fruit or veggie: "____ don't grow at all on Rocky Top, the dirt's too rocky by far, that's why all the folks on Rocky Top, get their ____ from a jar..." Which fruit or veggie goes here?

Answer: corn

According to the Osborne Brothers band, the song "Rocky Top" was released in written form December 25th, 1967 and the Osborne Brothers were the first to record it soon after. In the early 1980s the song was voted as one of the official state songs of Tennessee.
5. The Beach Boys sang of how much they love fruits or vegetables (I can't tell you the name of the song, but I will say its either "Fruit" or "Vegetable"). They crooned: "If you brought a big brown bag of them home, I'd jump up and down and hope you'd toss me a ____." Which fruit or veggie goes here?

Answer: carrot

The song, "Vegetable" was released in 1967 on the album "Smiley Smile." If you listen to the song (or look up the lyrics) it sounds as if it was written for a campaign to encourage people to eat more veggies. Near the end they sing: "...I know that you'll feel better, when you send us in your letter, and tell us the name of your favorite vegetable..."
6. "Song of the South" by Alabama became an unofficial anthem of the American southeast. In the song the lead vocalist sings of memories of southern-stlye down-home cooking: "Singing, song, song of the south! Sweet ____ pie and I shut my mouth!" Which fruit or veggie goes here?

Answer: potato

The "Song of the South" was first recorded in 1981 by American country artist Johnny Russell (reaching number 57 on the U.S. Billboard Country chart), then by Tom Hall and Earl Scruggs in 1982 (reaching number 72) and then in 1988 by Alabama, whose version would reach number one on both the American and Canadian country chart. (Just to clarify: sugar cane is a perennial grass, not a fruit or a vegetable.)
7. In the 1950s, the legendary Rosemary Clooney sang about the fruits and/or veggies with which she kept her straw hut stocked in the hit song "Mangos." The same fruit begins the song: "Mangos, ____, chestnuts from the fire, in my house of straw I have so much more..." What is the second fruit or veggie mentioned?

Answer: papaya

The song was released in March of 1957. It peaked on Columbia's U.S. and U.K. charts at number ten and number 17, respectively. An interesting note concerning papaya: it is a popular holistic remedy in its native countries, from ancient meso-America, to India, to China.

But its healing properties have also been harnessed by modern medicine. On the set of "Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom" lead actor Harrison Ford suffered a ruptured disc. To help alleviate the pain he was given injections of 'papain', an enzyme found in the leaves of unripe papaya. (http://www.baysidecapecoral.com)
8. During WWII, Glenn Miller and the Andrew Sisters made famous a song which tells a story of a young couple, asking each other to stay loyal during his overseas deployment. The chorus sings: "Don't sit under the ____ tree with anyone else but me ... NO NO NO!" Which fruit or veggie goes here?

Answer: apple

Sam Stept adapted the original music, titled "Anywhere the Bluebird Goes", from a 19th century folk song named "Long, Long Ago." The lyrics added in 1939 for a Broadway musical ("Yokel Boy") underwent revision in 1941, when America entered the war after Pearl Harbor, to reflect sentiments felt by lovers separated by overseas deployment.
9. The American punk-rock band NOFX sings about a fruit or vegetable, though its not mentioned until the very last word: "...there's something in your purse babe, my head is getting sore, maybe what we had was just green ____!" Which fruit or veggie goes here?

Answer: corn

Whatever the metaphor means, the song "Green Corn" was the first track on the band's 1991 album: "Ribbed." Perhaps the song's meaning is so ambiguous because it contains quotes from the film "Barfly" (1987).
10. Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell sang a duet, the last to be released, where they compare the world to specific fruit or veggie. The song opens: "The world is just a great big ____ and pain and fear are the spices that make you cry..." Which fruit or veggie goes here?

Answer: onion

"The Onion Song," released in 1970, encouraged people to focus on social progress to make the world a better place. Marvin and Tammi sang many popular duets during the 1960s, this one being their biggest hit (in the U.S. and U.K.). Motown Records released it last of several previously unreleased duets to help cover the costs of Tammi's medical treatments. Sadly, however, Tammi lost her battle against the malignant brain tumor shortly before the song skyrocketed through the charts. Anyone who has heard the lyrics know that, at least, it is a fitting last song by which to be remembered.
