Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. '3 Libras', 2000.

Answer: A Perfect Circle

From 'Mer de Noms', the 2000 debut of A Perfect Circle is the third single of the album, '3 Libras'. While not as hard in sound as the rest of the album, it still fared well on the Billboard Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock chart, both reaching up to number 12.

A Perfect Circle is the side project of Tool leader singer Maynard James Keenan and guitar technician Billy Howardel, they formed the band after Billy impressed Maynard with his demo tapes. Despite wanting a female singer for the band, Billy saw that Maynard fit the bill and thus, A Perfect Circle was born.
2. 'All For You', 2001.

Answer: Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson saw her biggest success in 2001 with 'All For You', a dance pop hit full of romance. Her collaboration with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis spawned what many critics and fans call her signature hit. It stayed at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks straight, showing her incredible longevity.
3. 'Royals', 2013.

Answer: Lorde

Inspired by seeing excesses of pop and hip hop stars, 'Royals' became an anthem for Millennials, by seeing no need in finding those excesses in life. New Zealand native Lorde wrote the song after seeing a picture of baseball player George Brett being handed a huge number of baseballs by fans for autograph, and by seeing hip hop stars always accompanied by luxury cars, alcohol and large watches, and saying there's no need for living with such luxury.

Lorde at the age of 17 blew the music world over with her breathy vocals and thought provoking lyrics, seizing number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
4. 'Rocket 69', 1951.

Answer: Connie Allen

'Rocket 69' was sung by the late Connie Allen in 1951, with backing from Todd Rhodes and His Toddlers. The song gained attention in 2015, after the release of post apocalyptic video game 'Fallout 4' with it's selection of old tunes from the 1950s played in the game's radio station 'Diamond City Radio'. With that title, you can probably say it sounded pretty salacious back in the old days.
5. 'Black Coffee', 2000.

Answer: All Saints

'Black Coffee' was a ballad with an ambient vibe. The sad love song tells of a first meeting between to people, and strangely falling in love at first glance. Written by songwriter Kristy Bertarelli, it made its way to All Saints and producer William Orbit, both fresh off the success of 'Pure Shores'. It was rearranged with a slick production and became another number one hit on the UK Singles for the Saints.

Despite the success of 'Black Coffee' and the album 'Saints and Sinners', All Saints was facing a tumultuous time as a group. Tensions mounted between the four members, with the Appleton sisters Nicole and Natalie wanting lead vocals for the song, but instead it went to Shaznay Lewis, the group's long time songwriter and 'de-facto' leader. Tension was clear to fans and the press, when all four members were never together in the music video, and had troubled live performances.

A year later in 2001, they announced the Saints' would dissolve, though they have reunited since 2013.
6. 'Gangnam Style', 2012.

Answer: Psy

The internet phenomenon that launched a K-Pop star to worldwide recognition. Psy became king of the world with 'Gangnam Style', a zany song with a wildly creative music video that sparked a massive fascination for the man. It is the most viewed video on YouTube, having gotten over 2 billion views, further solidifying the power of the K-Pop Wave to the world.

The song goes on about being trendy or hip, like someone who hangs out in Gangnam. Gangnam is a district in Seoul, Korea, known for its shopping and tourism.
7. 'In My Place', 2002.

Answer: Coldplay

With a sound that's upbeat and calming, 'In My Place' by Coldplay was somewhat disheartening with its lyrics on melancholy and unrequited love. Released in 2002 with their second album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head', the song was originally written for Coldplay's first album 'Parachutes', but was left out due to time constraints.
8. 'Empty Souls', 2004.

Answer: Manic Street Preachers

'Empty Souls' is the second single for Welsh band Manic Street Preachers' 2004 album 'Lifeblood'. The song was written as a response to the attacks of September 11, 2001. When released as a single, the chorus line of 'collapsing like the Twin Towers' was edited and replaced with 'collapsing like dying flowers' for radio and television broadcast.

A major success for the Preachers, who managed to get the song high at number two on the UK Singles.
9. 'Beyond the Sea', 1959.

Answer: Bobby Darin

'Beyond the Sea' is based on a French song called 'La Mer', written by songwriter Jack Lawrence. The most popular version came around in 1959, with Bobby Darin at helm. A massive hit, reaching up to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number eight on the UK Singles chart.

It also gained stature in the 2000s. In 2008, 2k Games released 'BioShock', a game set in an underwater dystopian city in 1960, and 'Beyond the Sea' was featured in the soundtrack.
10. 'Caribbean Blue', 1991.

Answer: Enya

1991 was another fruitful year for Irish new age icon Enya, with 'Caribbean Blue' from 'Shepherd Moon'. The song's prominence came from its beautiful music video, depicting a few actors along with Enya in an oil painting type setting, a truly breathtaking stroke of art in my book.

It didn't rank as high as her other singles, reaching number 13 on the UK Singles and number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100.
