Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Had UK top ten hits with "Buffalo Gals" (1982) and "Double Dutch" (1983).

Answer: Malcolm McLaren

McLaren may be better remembered for being the manager of the Sex Pistols, but he did have quite a successful recording career himself releasing hip hop, funk and disco tracks as well as a whole album of opera fused with R&B. "Buffalo Gals" made an impression on several artists, most notably Eminem and Sublime, both of whom have sampled it on their tracks.
2. Birthname Brian Warner, hit the UK top five in 2001 with his cover of "Tainted Love".

Answer: Marilyn Manson

Manson had maintained a cult following for some years before his cover of the Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" in 1995 catapulted him into the mainstream. With his four octave vocal range, he is a captivating singer, who is also talented in other fields.

He has held several art exhibitions and received praise for his watercolours, and has also appeared in TV shows such as "Californication" and "Sons Of Anarchy". He also has his own brand of Swiss made absinthe, which won a gold medal at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
3. Member of the Doobie Brothers from 1975 to 1982. Found solo success with "I Keep Forgettin' " (1982).

Answer: Michael McDonald

Multiple Grammy award winner McDonald initially joined the Doobie Brothers as a temporary member while vocalist Tom Johnston recovered from illness, but the partnership was so successful that he ended up staying, singing on well known tracks such as "Takin' It to the Streets" (1976) and "What A Fool Believes" (1979) which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA.

He has also had a Billboard Hot 100 number one, performing a duet with Patti LaBelle, the 1986 hit, "On My Own".
4. Along with Gerald Casale, the only constant member of Devo between 1973 and 2019.

Answer: Mark Mothersbaugh

Devo's biggest hit was "Whip It" in 1980, which reached number 11 in Canada, and although the following years have been lean, chart wise, the band has a huge cult following and are well known for their theatrical stage shows. Away from Devo, Mothersbaugh is best known for writing all of the music for the children's TV show, "Rugrats" between 1991 and 2004.
5. Lead vocalist for Sugar Ray, who had their big hit in 1999 with "Every Morning".

Answer: Mark McGrath

McGrath is certainly best known for his work with Californian rockers Sugar Ray, but has also appeared with "supergroup", The Wondergirls, alongside various members of bands such as The Cult, Thirty Seconds To Mars and Stone Temple Pilots. McGrath has also done some TV work, appearing on "Celebrity Big Brother" in USA in 2017 as well as hosting "Don't Forget the Lyrics!" in 2010.
6. Real name of the artist that had his first Billboard Hot 100 chart topper in 2002 with "Lose Yourself".

Answer: Marshall Mathers

Mathers is of course better known to the world as Eminem and since releasing his debut album in 1996 has become one of the most influential forces in hip hop and rap music and "Lose Yourself" also won an Oscar for Best Oroginal Song, making Eminem the first rapper to receive this award.

In 2018, with the release of his "Kamikaze" album, he became the first artist ever to have nine consecutive albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200 in USA.
7. Folk rocker, breakthrough hit with his band was "Little Lion Man" in 2009.

Answer: Marcus Mumford

We have British folk legend Laura Marling to thank for Mumford and Sons as the band were her backing musicians before deciding to form their own group, with Marcus switching from drums to vocals. In 2012, Mumford married actress Carey Mulligan, known for "An Education" (2009), "Suffragette" (2015) and "Mudbound" (2017), who had been his childhood pen pal, until they lost touch.
8. Wu-Tang Clan member. Had a Billboard Hot 100 number three hit in 1995 with a version of Aretha Fraklin's "You're All I Need to Get By", with Mary J. Blige.

Answer: Method Man

Everything Method Man seems to touch turns to gold. He has had recording success with Wu-Tang Clan, including a Canadian and USA Billboard 200 number one album and solo success including four Billboard 200 top ten albums. He was heavily involved in the video game released by Wu-Tang Clan, "Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style" (1999) as well as playing his part in their clothing line, Wu Wear and is also an accomplished actor, most notably playing the part of Proposition Joe's nephew, "Cheese" Wagstaff in "The Wire" (2003-2008) before being murdered by Slim Charles.
9. Motley Crue guitarist since 1981. Real name is Robert Deal.

Answer: Mick Mars

Mars was a founding member of Motley Crue back in 1981, and although the band stopped touring in 2015, they continue to write and record music. Mars is a fan of the Fender Stratocaster, the iconic rock guitar favoured by many, and regularly plays a home made model, customised with pieces from various Strats through the years.
10. Rapper that had a Billboard 200 number one album in 2011 with "Blue Slide Park". Died of an overdose in 2018.

Answer: Mac Miller

Miller may not have managed huge singles chart success during his lifetime, but his album sales told a different tale, with each of his five albums reaching the top five on the Billboard 200 in USA. Miller was quite open about his struggles with addiction and often made reference to them in his lyrics, but it still came as something of a shock when he died in 2018 as a result of mixing opiates, cocaine and alcohol. Following his death, thousands of fans honoured his life at Blue Slide Park in Pittsburgh, the park which lent its name to his debut album.
