Written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Edward Holland Jr., this song was offered to, and turned down by The Marvelettes. It became the first number one hit for The Supremes, three years after they were first signed by Berry Gordy of Motown Records.

Answer: Last Kiss

Written by Wayne Cochran in 1962, this song was dedicated to Jeanette Clark, a 16 year old who, along with two of her friends, lost her life in a car accident the weekend before Christmas, on a highway near Cochran's cabin. The version that made the charts in '64 was performed by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers.

Answer: We'll Sing in the Sunshine

Written and performed by Gale Garnett, this song peaked at only number 4 on the charts. However it did take home the Grammy for Best Folk Recording of 1964.

Mary Wells, the first woman signed to Motown Records, also gave them their very first number one hit with this recording. It was written by Smokey Robinson.

Although performed many different times, this version of Richard Berry's song was performed by the Kingsmen. The Kingsmen started their career as a garage band, playing for high school dances and parties. "Louie, Louie" was their first recording.

Three Wilson brothers, a cousin and a friend formed the original Beach Boys, a group renowned for their vocal harmonies almost as much as for their surfing songs. This was their first number one hit, released by Capitol Records in June of '64.

"She Loves You" was the fourth big UK hit for the Beatles, where it was released in August of '63. It was number one on the U.S. charts for two weeks in March of '64.

"I Want to Hold Your Hand" was the Beatles first big hit in North America. Released by Capitol Records, on Dec. 26/63, it hit number one on Jan. 18/64, and stayed there for seven weeks. The timing was perfect, since they were scheduled to appear on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in February of '64.
