Answer: Hard to Say I'm Sorry

Originally known as The Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago formed in the 60s. They have been the opening act for performers like Jimmy Hendrix and Janis Joplin, before becoming well known in their own right. This huge hit was off their album 'Chicago 16', which sold over a million copies.
2. What was the #9 hit for the year 1982? "I heat up, I can't cool down. You got me spinnin', 'Round and 'round. 'Round and 'round and 'round it goes, Where it stops nobody knows. Every time you call my name, I heat up like a burnin' flame. Burnin' flame full of desire, Kiss me baby, let the fire get higher."

Answer: Abracadabra

Steve Miller started playing guitar at age 4, and formed his first band at age 12. Apparently 'Abracadabra' was a platinum-selling, breakthrough hit for him, but I'm sorry to say that it's one that I can't remember!
3. What was the #8 hit for the year 1982? "Say uh, oh yeah life goes on, Long after the thrill of livin is gone. Say uh, oh yeah life goes on, Long after the thrill of livin is gone. They walk on."

Answer: Jack and Diane

From the album "American Fool", this catchy tune by John Cougar Mellencamp was released under the name John Cougar. Mellencamp would later add his last name to his stage name, and then eventually drop the Cougar and become known as John Melencamp. "American Fool" was his breakthrough album.
4. What was the #7 hit of the year 1982? "When I was a young boy, Said put away those young boy ways. Now that I'm gettin' older, So much older I love all those young boy days. With a girl like you, With a girl like you, Lord knows there are things we can do baby, Just me and you."

Answer: Hurts So Good

Also from the album, "American Fool", "Hurts So Good" was an even bigger hit for John Cougar (Mellencamp). Mellencamp went on to create a bit of a stir in 1985, when he was one of the first to refuse to let tobacco and alcohol companies be sponsors for his tours.
5. What was the #6 hit for the year 1982? "You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, When I met you. I picked you out, I shook you up, and turned you around, Turned you into someone new. Now five years later on you've got the world at your feet, Success has been so easy for you. But don't forget it's me who put you where you are now, And I can put you back down too."

Answer: Don't You Want Me

Often referred to as the first superstars of 'synth pop', Human League was started in the late 70s by two computer operators in England. "Don't You Want Me' was a number one hit in the U.K. and was only slightly less successful in North America.
6. What was the #5 hit for the year 1982? "______________________, Live together in perfect harmony. Side by side on my piano keyboard, Oh Lord, why don't we? We all know that people are the same, wherever you go."

Answer: Ebony and Ivory

One source I read said that "Ebony and Ivory" was written by Paul McCartney, but another source said it was written by McCartney in partnership with Stevie Wonder. Given the incredible writing talents of both of these artists, either scenario is possible - their vocal talents certainly blended wonderfully.
7. What was the #4 hit for the year 1982? "Does she walk, does she talk, does she come complete? My home-room, home-room angel, just pulled me to my feet. She was pure like snowflakes, no one could ever stain, The memory of my angel could never cause me pain. The years go by I'm looking through a girly magazine, And there's my homegrown angel on the pages in between."

Answer: Centerfold

Formed in 1967, J. Geils Band was an incredibly successful show band throughout the 70s - unfortunately that success didn't always translate to top forty hits. From the album "Freeze Frame", "Centerfold" was one of their biggest hits
8. What was the #3 hit for the year 1982? "I love rock n' roll, So put another dime in the jukebox, baby. I love rock n' roll, So come an' take your time an' dance with me."

Answer: I Love Rock 'N Roll

Often referred to as a female Elvis, Joan Jett was the first woman to own her own recording company, Blackheart Records. "I Love Rock 'N Roll" was a huge hit for her on this label, spending 2 months at number one on the charts. This was after she was refused a recording contract with 23 different recording lables.
9. What was the #2 hit of the year 1982? "It's the ______________, it's the thrill of the fight, Risin' up to the challenge of our rival. And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night, And he's watchin' us all in the ______________."

Answer: Eye of the Tiger

Sylvester Stallone liked the band Survivor, so he asked them to write a song for "Rocky III". "Eye of the Tiger", written by Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan, was the result, giving the group their biggest hit ever. Stallone was so pleased with the song, that he had them write another for "Rocky IV". "Burning Heart" was the result, but it was not nearly as big a hit.
10. What was the #1 hit for the year 1982? "I'm saying all the things that I know you'll like, Making good conversation. I gotta handle you just right, You know what I mean. I took you to an intimate restaurant, Then to a suggestive movie. There's nothing left to talk about, 'Less it's horizontally."

Answer: Physical

Olivia Newton-John is one of the few pop artists who was able to successfully survive a radical image change. Just like her character Sandy, from "Grease", Newton-John transformed herself from a sweet and innocent little girl, to a sultry and very sexy woman belting out very suggestive lyrics.

Her fans obviously loved the change, because "Physical" held the number one spot for a number of weeks.
