Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What number one album featured the hit "Centerfold"?

Answer: "Freeze Frame" by the J. Geils Band

The J. Geils Band released "Freeze Frame" late in 1981 and it rose to the top of the charts in 1982. Most people think that J. Geils was the singer of the band, but Peter Wolf was actually the singer. Jay Geils (note the difference in spelling) played guitar in the band.
2. What girl band featured Jane Wiedlin, Charlotte Caffey, Belinda Carlisle, and Kathy Valentine? These ladies had a number one album in 1982.

Answer: The Go-Go's

The Go-Go's released "Beauty and the Beat" in July of 1981 and the album peaked at number one on March 6, 1982. The album yielded the hits "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat".
3. What artist recorded the soundtrack to "Chariots of Fire"?

Answer: Vangelis

Vangelis was born Evangelos Odyssey Papathanassiou in Valos, Greece. His modern, electronic score to a movie set in the 1930's seemed a bit far-fetched, but it seemed to work. The album reached number one on April 17, 1982.
4. What supergroup had a self-titled, number one debut album in 1982? Hint, the band's name is a continent.

Answer: Asia

Asia was the supergroup comprised of members of Emerson, Lake and Palmer (Carl Palmer), Yes (Steve Howe), King Crimson (John Wetton), and The Buggles (Geoff Downes). Their hit "Heat of the Moment" launched the album to number one on May 15, 1982.
5. What Paul McCartney album was number one during 1982?

Answer: Tug of War

"Tug of War" is the album that united Mr. McCartney with Stevie Wonder on the hit "Ebony and Ivory". Paul has sold over 25 million albums as a solo artist. Not too shabby, but nowhere near the 164.5 million albums sold by his other band, The Beatles.
6. Which Fleetwood Mac album featured the MTV hits "Hold Me" and "Gypsy"?

Answer: Mirage

Mirage was released in June of 1982 and reached number one on August 7. The album was critically and financially successful, reaching platinum status on August 25, 1982, but most consider "Tusk" and "Rumours" the better Fleetwood Mac albums.
7. By what artist name was the number one album "American Fool" recorded?

Answer: John Cougar

It seems Mr. Mellencamp could never settle on what name to use, recording albums by all those listed. The album "American Fool" had the hits "Jack and Diane", "Hurts So Good", and "Thundering Hearts". The album reached number one on September 11, 1982.
8. Whose album was "Business as Usual"?

Answer: Men at Work

The Australian group Men at Work released "Business as Usual" in the summer of 1982 and it reached number one on November 13, 1982. The album featured the hits "Who Can It Be Now" and "Down Under". Men at Work was formed in Melbourne by the Scotsman Colin Haye and the Australian Robert Strykert as an acoustic duo in 1979. The group won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1982.
9. Of all the albums in this quiz, which album spent the most weeks atop the charts?

Answer: Business as Usual

"Business as Usual" spent fifteen weeks atop the charts during the winter of 1982. "American Fool" stayed for nine weeks. "Asia" was on top for nine weeks as well. "Beauty and the Beat" only remained at number one for six weeks.
10. Of the albums listed, which produced the most Top 40 singles? All Billboard singles charts apply to this question.

Answer: Asia

"Asia" produced five Top 40 singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Singles chart. "Heat of the Moment" reached number one, "Only Time Will Tell" reached number eight, "Sole Survivor" reached number ten, "Wildest Dreams" reached number 28, and "Here Comes the Feeling" reached number 40.
