Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "1, 2, 3, Red Light" was a hit single and a 1968 album title by which Bubblegum genre group?

Answer: 1910 Fruitgum Company

Six months after releasing their debut album, "Simon Says", the 1910 Fruitgum Company released "1, 2, 3, Red Light". Frank Jeckell was a guitarist when the band originally formed in 1965 as Jeckell and The Hydes. Two years later they changed their name and signed with Buddah Records. They released "Simon Says" which went to the US Top Ten.
"Simon Says" and "1, 2, 3, Red Light" both sold well over a million copies. In 1969 they released their last album with Buddah called "Hard Ride". Compilation albums have been released subsequently and reformed versions of the band continued to tour. 1910 Fruitgum Company performed at the Caravan of Stars show in 2007.
Music Explosion had a 1968 hit with "Little Bit o' Soul". The Ohio Express had a Top Forty with "Beg, Borrow and Steal" and The Lemon Pipers had a major hit with "Green Tambourine" in 1968.
2. Which instrumental group released a US Number Five single titled "Red River Rock" in 1959 as a follow up to their Top Forty single "Crossfire"?

Answer: Johnny and the Hurricanes

Johnny and the Hurricanes were originally called The Orbits when they formed in Ohio in 1957. Sax player Johnny Paris got together with some high school friends and began backing a local Rockabilly artist. The musicians signed with Twirl Records as Johnny and the Hurricanes and recorded "Crossfire" in an empty theater to enhance the echo quality of the recording.

When "Crossfire" charted at Number 23 Johnny and the Hurricanes released a number of successful singles beginning with "Red River Rock" followed by "Beatnick Fly", "Reveille Rock" and other instrumentals.

The group developed a big following in Germany. In 1962 they played concerts in Hamburg with a then unknown group called the Beatles opening for them. The Champs had success in the late fifties with "Tequila". "Torquay" and "Bulldog" were released by The Fireballs. Bill Black's Combo released an instrumental version of "Don't Be Cruel".
3. The Cyrkle had a 1966 US Number Two hit with "Red Rubber Ball". What country was the band from?

Answer: United States

The Cyrkle was comprised of college students from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, who performed at fraternity parties as The Rhondells. They were discovered by Brian Epstein, changed their name and opened for several Beatle concert dates including the Dodger Stadium venue. After the success of "Red Rubber Ball" The Cyrkle had another successful single with "Turn-Down Day".

Their debut album, "Red Rubber Ball", was followed by a second album titled "Neon" and they recorded the soundtrack for a movie called "The Minx" in 1967.

After releasing various unsuccessful singles they disbanded in late 1967.
4. Which California native left the band Montrose then recorded a song titled "Red" on his eponymous 1977 solo album before fronting another band from 1985 to 1996?

Answer: Sammy Hagar

Sammy Hagar composed his first song, "Bad Motor Scooter", while he was working with Montrose. He left the band after they recorded the "Paper Money" LP to go solo.
When "Red" became successful he earned the nickname "The Red Rocker". By 1981 he had scored a major hit with "There's Only One Way to Rock" followed in 1984 with "I Can't Drive 55". Van Halen invited Sammy to audition for David Lee Roth's replacement slot and with Hagar fronting the band Van Halen produced four multi-platinum albums.
Queen and Bad Company were some of the bands British native and singer Paul Rodgers worked with. Jeff Beck accompanied Paul Rodgers on the 1993 album "Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute to Muddy Waters". Fellow Brit David Coverdale was the singer for Deep Purple from 1973 to 1976 before going solo then working with Whitesnake in 1977.
5. UB 40 had a hit with "Red Red Wine" in 1983. Which singer composed the song and recorded it on his 1967 "Just for You" album?

Answer: Neil Diamond

Neil Diamond's single release of "Red Red Wine" included a choir but only reached Number 62 on the US charts. Ironically the flip side was "Red Rubber Ball". "Just for You" was Neil's second studio album. It included "Cherry, Cherry", "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon", "Shilo", "Solitary Man" and "I'm A Believer", made popular by The Monkees.
UB40 was a Reggae influenced pop band that formed in Birmingham, England, in 1978. Their first album was titled "Signing Off". They charted many singles including "Red Red Wine" and cover versions of "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "I Got You Babe".
"Brown Eyed Girl" was a 1967 US Number Ten single by Van Morrison. "Ten Little Indians" was a 1967 single release from Harry Nilsson and James Taylor recorded his self-titled debut album in 1968.
6. "Li'l Red Riding Hood" by Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs topped the US Billboard charts for two weeks in August, 1966.

Answer: False

"Summer in the City" by The Lovin' Spoonful kept "Little Red Riding Hood" at the Number Two slot for two weeks. Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs' debut hit, "Wooly Bully", also peaked at the Number Two slot a year earlier despite selling over three million copies.

After "Wooly Bully" the group released "Ju Ju Hand" and "Ring Dang Doo" but neither single managed to capture the success of "Wooly Bully". The entire band called it quits so Domingo "Sam" Zamudio assembled another group from members of the club band at New York's Metropole Cafe prior to recording and releasing "Little Red Riding Hood". Zamudio went solo in 1970 and released an album called "Sam, Hard and Heavy" for Atlantic Records.
7. Which 1982 Prince album contained the 1983 hit single "Little Red Corvette"?

Answer: 1999

The single version of "1999" didn't do well when it was released from the album of the same name, peaking at Number 44. After "Little Red Corvette" was released from the LP and made the Top Ten "1999" was re-released and made it to Number 12 in the US. Dez Dickerson played the guitar solo on "Little Red Corvette" and provided backing vocals on "1999". "Let's Pretend We're Married" and "Delirious" were two other US singles from the "1999" album. "Automatic" was released as a single in Australia. "For You" was released in 1978. "Lovesexy" was a 1988 Prince album and "The Black Album" came out in 1994.
8. Who released the US Top Ten single "Lady in Red"?

Answer: Chris de Burgh

Chris de Burgh's single, "Lady in Red", reached the top of the charts in Canada, Ireland, the UK and Norway but peaked at Number Three in the US. Chris de Burgh was born in Argentina and his family traveled extensively because his father was a diplomat. By 1974 the family had settled in the UK and Chris signed a record deal with A and M Records. None of his efforts charted in the US through the seventies but when "Lady in Red" was released from his 1986 "Into the Light" album it became his only US hit. Peter Cetera released "Glory Of Love" in 1986. "No One Is To Blame" was a release from Howard Jones the same year. Phil Collins released "Take Me Home" in 1986.
9. Which group from Florida released the Number Two 1966 single "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron"?

Answer: The Royal Guardsmen

A six-piece band from Ocala, Florida, known as The Posmen changed their name to The Royal Guardsmen in an effort to become associated with the British Invasion. They released a 1966 flop titled "Baby Let's Wait" but when they followed with "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" they had a national hit.

They released the Top Twenty "The Return of the Red Baron" in 1967 and followed with more Snoopy themed songs. When they re-released "Baby Let's Wait" in 1968 it made the Top Forty. By the mid-seventies the Snoopy craze had passed and when "Snoopy for President" was released in 1976 it failed to chart. Missouri native Bob Kuban and The In-Men took "The Cheater" to Number 12 in 1966. "I See the Light" was a 1966 release from The Five Americans, a band that formed while in college in Oklahoma.
