Question 1 of 10
1. From the moment the Drongo Brothers erected their big top, strange and inexplicable phenomena began to happen in the hitherto peaceful and idyllic village. Some people started selling postcards of a hanging while others painted passports brown, but perhaps the strangest occurrence of all was the bizarre sight of the village's beauty parlour being full of sailors. All three of these sights bore an uncanny resemblance to scenes mentioned in the opening verse of what Bob Dylan song in which the circus was in town? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Vincent Van Drongo was the most artistic of the brothers, so it was he who was responsible for designing the posters that were hung about the village advertising the circus. But the local Mayor, Mr. George Martin, insisted they be removed when he pointed out that the advertised attractions such as, a show on trampoline, a band beginning at ten to six, a somersaulting Mr. H and a waltzing horse named Henry had been plagiarised from which song he produced for a band known as The Beatles? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Performance night had finally arrived and the village folk had filled the seats and were waiting with excited anticipation. P. T. Drongo entered the circus ring, removed his top hat and bowed to the rapturous applause of the audience. When the clapping abated he returned his top hat to his head and with outstretched arms proudly announced:

"You've heard of Oxford Circus
You've heard of Piccadilly Circus
Well this is the Drongo Brothers' Rock and Roll Circus".

The audience were shocked by such a brazen act of theft. They all knew too well that this was the spoken introduction to an album by which band, with a simple change of the performers name to that of the Drongo Brothers?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. After such an inauspicious beginning to proceedings, the audience were of the same belief that things could only improve. They soon learned that nothing could have been further from the truth when P. T. Drongo continued:

"Following in the traditions of the Drongo Brothers' Circus, our first act tonight was to be our performing monkeys, but the rumours you have all been hearing are true. Yes, we have no bananas and the monkeys refuse to enter the ring on an empty stomach. Fear not though my good people, for we have procured the services of some other entertainers who call themselves The Monkees. So please make welcome Davy, Micky and Michael."

Nerves had obviously gotten the better of P. T. Drongo as he forgot to mention the name of which Monkee?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. A large hoop was wheeled to the centre of the circus ring where it was doused in a flammable liquid and set alight.

"I would like you all to join me in a minute's silence", implored P. T. Drongo, "in remembrance of our late brother Pyro who sadly passed away many years ago practising his awe inspiring act. The details are still too harrowing to be discussed, suffice it to say that, like the lyrics sung by his Country and Western hero the 'Man in Black', Pyro 'fell in to a burning ring of fire'."

Who exactly was Pyro's hero?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Felix Drongo, the keeper of the big cats, walked to the ring and whispered into the ear of his brother P. T. After a brief conversation and much gesticulation, Felix went back to from whence he came. Just between me and you, Felix had informed his brother that he would not be able to perform with his star attraction Leo that night as he had accidentally administered a double dose of tranquilizer pills that he routinely gave him to prevent his head from being bitten off when he stuck it inside Leo's jaw. The resulting effect was exactly the same as which song by Solomon Linda which was originally titled "Mbube"? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Mahout Drongo was a sad and dejected man. He sat alone crying in his caravan as the village Mayor, Mr. George Martin, had earlier in the day coaxed Mahout's elephants into leaving the circus with the promise of greater fortunes.

"Working for peanuts is all very fine
But I can show you a better time"

Those were the exact words that Mr. Martin spoke to the elephants. Mahout thought it highly hypocritical that Mr. Martin had earlier accused the Drongo Brothers of plagiarism when these very words were taken from which Beatles song?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Determined to have at least one animal act on the night, P. T. Drongo riffled through his fat wallet in search of a business card he had kept for emergency purposes. He found it hidden amongst the crisp, clean notes of the night's takings.

J. Barnes and Co.
Circus Animals
Immediate Delivery
Phone: 555-1982

Within fifteen minutes of placing his call, the package was delivered. But P. T. was dismayed to find that, rather than containing real animals, the parcel consisted of one-hundred copies of a recorded album titled 'Circus Animals' by whom?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. "This show is an absolute disgrace" bellowed the voice from the back row of the bleachers. "You do not deserve to associate yourselves with the sacred circus profession, and I am one who is well qualified to know. For many years I performed my own circus act before growing weary of travelling from town to town, and so I faked my own demise. My death was recorded as a fact however in a novelty song by Ray Stevens in 1985 in which he claims I was "splattered all over the upper bleacher." Perhaps you shall remember me when I mention my name. I am..."? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. P. T. Drongo had only one card left to play in order to convince the villagers that their attendance had not been for naught. He huddled his brothers together and ordered them to their caravans to prepare themselves for the dreaded 'Plan Z'. For the next five minutes he engaged the crowd with an apologetic monologue before announcing:

"There is all but one thing remaining for the Drongo Brothers to present to you good people. So, without further ado, I quote the title of the well known Stephen Sondheim composition, from the stage musical 'A Little Night Music', when I say it is time to..." ?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Desolation Row

**A World's First Not To Be Missed**

Be there when history is made as the People's Poet and Voice of a Generation, Mr. Bob Dylan, dares to do the unimaginable and records all but one song of an entire album with (gasp) an electric rock'n'roll band. Having already offended the purest of folk purists on his previous half electric/half acoustic album 'Bringing It All Back Home' (known in some parts as 'Subterranean Homesick Blues'), Mr. Dylan will go one step further on his next recording 'Highway 61 Revisited'. Only time will tell whether this bold and brave move will pay dividends or mark the beginning of the end for Mr. Dylan. The early mail indicates that this could prove to be a musical masterpiece of the twentieth century. Rumour has it, that like so many stories that have come before, the first four words to be heard on the album will be "once upon a time" from a track to be titled 'Like a Rolling Stone'. Thenceforth Mr. Dylan will lead his listeners through his unique style of blues-folk-rock with scores of references to historical, biblical, cultural and fictional characters. All this is expected to culminate with an eleven minute epic to be known as 'Desolation Row' featuring an all-star cast of many: Einstein, Cinderella, Cain and Abel, Casanova, Robin Hood and a fighting Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot to name but a few. And for all you folk purists who plan to vent your spleen with pen and paper, I leave you with a bootlegged sample of the closing lines of this song:

"Right now I can't read too good
Don't send me no more letters, no
Not unless you mail them from
Desolation Row."

Answer: Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite

**Come One - Come All**

"For the benefit of Mr. Kite
There will be a show tonight
On trampoline"

Witness the pure delights of the quartet of Liverpudlian lads known as The Beatles. Be amazed as they take their already widely acclaimed catalogue of recorded material to hitherto unscaled heights with their brand new album 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. Due for release in the month of June in the year 1967, this album promises to break the mould and set the new standard for all musicians who follow in the footsteps of the Fab Four. You might be deceived into thinking that 'Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds' is the only gem (pun intended) to be found on this recording, but you will be pleasantly mistaken. Further exploration will unveil a composition from the pen of Mr. John Lennon titled 'Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite', a song that was inspired by a poster that Mr. Lennon had purchased advertising 'Pablo Fanque's Circus Royal' of 1843. While the circus might have come and gone, thanks to the efforts of Mr. Lennon's Beatles and their music producer, Mr. George Martin, its performance has been recorded for future prosperity. This creative partnership have achieved a carnival like atmosphere for the middle eight section of the song through the recording of carousel organs. Not being completely satisfied with the original sound, the tapes were chopped into pieces and thrown in the air before being randomly reassembled.

"A splendid time is guaranteed for all".
3. Performance night had finally arrived and the village folk had filled the seats and were waiting with excited anticipation. P. T. Drongo entered the circus ring, removed his top hat and bowed to the rapturous applause of the audience. When the clapping abated he returned his top hat to his head and with outstretched arms proudly announced: "You've heard of Oxford Circus You've heard of Piccadilly Circus Well this is the Drongo Brothers' Rock and Roll Circus". The audience were shocked by such a brazen act of theft. They all knew too well that this was the spoken introduction to an album by which band, with a simple change of the performers name to that of the Drongo Brothers?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

**You Are Cordially Invited**

Messrs. Jagger, Richards, Jones, Wyman and Watts, request the pleasure of the company of ___ on the 11th of December 1968, to join them and their troupe of trilling troubadours under the Big Top as they perform 'The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus'. Be sure to wear your Sunday best as this event will be filmed for a BBC television special.

"And we've got sights and sounds and marvels to delight your eyes and ears, and you'll be able to hear the first one of those in a few moments."

Join The Rolling Stones and their handpicked ensemble featuring:
'The Jumping and Juggling' Jethro Tull
'The Wonder of the World' Taj Mahal
The 'Highwire Hopping' Who
'The Magnificent' Marianne Faithfull and
'The Death Defying' Dirty Mac, the world's first supergroup comprised of John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchell.

There is no guarantee that The Rolling Stones will be satisfied with the final product, and the release of this film and its accompanying album might not be realised until 1996.
4. After such an inauspicious beginning to proceedings, the audience were of the same belief that things could only improve. They soon learned that nothing could have been further from the truth when P. T. Drongo continued: "Following in the traditions of the Drongo Brothers' Circus, our first act tonight was to be our performing monkeys, but the rumours you have all been hearing are true. Yes, we have no bananas and the monkeys refuse to enter the ring on an empty stomach. Fear not though my good people, for we have procured the services of some other entertainers who call themselves The Monkees. So please make welcome Davy, Micky and Michael." Nerves had obviously gotten the better of P. T. Drongo as he forgot to mention the name of which Monkee?

Answer: Peter

**Wholesome Family Entertainment**

"Here we come
Walkin' down the street
We get the funniest looks from
Everyone we meet."

Hey, hey, they're The Monkees, Americas response to the British Invasion. This 'pre-fab four', the brainchild of Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, and comprising Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, has been assembled especially for a television show to begin airing in 1968. But if you have any preconceived notion that this quartet is just a pack of precocious primates, be prepared to change your mind. Hilarious hijinks and side-splitting slapstick is sure to abound with their unique and off-beat humour. And who knows what the future may hold for The Monkees? Albums, tours, a movie, possibly even a 'mania' named in their honour may be just around the corner.
The details are still too harrowing to be discussed, suffice it to say that, like the lyrics sung by his Country and Western hero the 'Man in Black', Pyro 'fell in to a burning ring of fire'." Who exactly was Pyro's hero?

Answer: Johnny Cash

**STOP PRESS*STOP PRESS*STOP PRESS**

In a bizarre example of life imitating art, tragedy struck The Drongo Brothers' Travelling Circus today when Pyro Drongo, the troupe's fire-breathing acrobat, was fatally burnt while practising his 'Ring of Fire' stunt. While declining to comment on circumstances surrounding the death of his brother, ringmaster P. T. Drongo did have this to offer:

"Pyro was a long time admirer of Johnny Cash and his music and named his stunt after his favourite song. He knew everything there was to know about 'Ring of Fire' such as, it was written by June Carter, Johnny's future wife, in collaboration with fellow Country and Western artist Merle Kilgore and was originally released as a single by June's sister Anita. He said that after Anita had failed to have a hit with the song, Johnny made a few minor changes to it and added the mariachi style brass sections to his recording. You want to know stats, Pyro had those memorised as well. The song was released on the compilation album 'Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash' in 1963 and in the same year reached the number one position on the 'U. S. Billboard Hot Country Singles' and peaked at number seventeen on the 'U. S. Billboard Hot 100' in its single form".

Answer: The Lion Sleeps Tonight

**From The African Jungle To The Broadway Stage**

The chronological journey of a song.

1939 - Solomon Linda, employee of Gallo Record Company of South Africa, mostly improvises on the song he had written the previous decade with the title 'Mbube', the Zulu word for lion. He is backed by The Evening Birds choir and the song becomes a watershed moment in African a cappella style music.

1951 - Folk artist Pete Seeger, along with his group The Weavers, record 'Mbube' as a single under the title 'Wimoweh'. This is a misinterpretation of the Zulu 'uyimbube', you are the lion, from the chorus of the Solomon Linda original.

1961 - Doo-wop group The Tokens record a new version of the song with additional lyrics and an original musical arrangement. The song is released as a single under the title 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' and spends three weeks at the number one spot on the 'U. S. Billboard Hot 100'.

1962 - Solomon Linda dies a penniless man of kidney failure.

1994 - Along with original compositions by Elton John and Tim Rice, Walt Disney Pictures use 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' in a scene in their animated feature film 'The Lion King'.

1997 - 'The Lion King' musical makes its Broadway debut, once again using 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' as one of its musical numbers.

2004 - Descendants of Solomon Linda file a legal suit against Walt Disney Pictures claiming royalties of $1.6 million for the use of the song.

2006 - An undisclosed settlement figure was reached between Linda's descendants and the owners of the rights to 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight', Abilene Music.
7. Mahout Drongo was a sad and dejected man. He sat alone crying in his caravan as the village Mayor, Mr. George Martin, had earlier in the day coaxed Mahout's elephants into leaving the circus with the promise of greater fortunes. "Working for peanuts is all very fine But I can show you a better time" Those were the exact words that Mr. Martin spoke to the elephants. Mahout thought it highly hypocritical that Mr. Martin had earlier accused the Drongo Brothers of plagiarism when these very words were taken from which Beatles song?

Answer: Drive My Car

**The Greatest Show On Earth**

It's 1965 and the Beatles have all grown up, and their album "Rubber Soul" proves it. Gone are the tame and innocent lyrics of the past such as "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah'" and in come a more mature, thoughtful and sometimes experimental batch of songs. But it nearly wasn't to be. The opening track of the album, "Drive My Car", was originally more of the same with a chorus along the lines of:

"You can give me golden rings
You can give me anything
'Cause baby, I love you"

But when Paul played this to John they both agreed it was terrible. At John's suggestion this was changed to "Baby you can drive my car", a common euphemism for the act of sexual intercourse in Blues music.
8. Determined to have at least one animal act on the night, P. T. Drongo riffled through his fat wallet in search of a business card he had kept for emergency purposes. He found it hidden amongst the crisp, clean notes of the night's takings. J. Barnes and Co. T. was dismayed to find that, rather than containing real animals, the parcel consisted of one-hundred copies of a recorded album titled 'Circus Animals' by whom?

Answer: Cold Chisel

**Standing Room Only - Tickets At Door**

Direct from the smoke filled, beer sodden venues of the Oz Pub Rock circuit, where the sweat drenched punters are packed in like tinned sardines, comes Cold Chisel. In a once in a lifetime event, Cold Chisel will perform their critically acclaimed 1982 release 'Circus Animals' in its entirety. This is the album that reached the number one position on the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart and was named at number four in the '100 Best Australian Albums' book compiled by music journalists Toby Creswell, Craig Mathieson and John O'Donnell. Can't wait for the show to begin? Do yourself a favour as the man in the hat would say, and put the vinyl disc on your turntable and set the volume to loud.

The vodka soaked vocal chords of lead singer Jimmy Barnes are at their rawest on the album's opening track 'You Got Nothing I Want', an angry, backhanded swipe at a music label representative. Accompanying this song are other Oz rock staples such as 'Bow River', 'My Baby' and the much loved and oft covered 'When the War Is Over'.
Perhaps you shall remember me when I mention my name. I am..."?

Answer: Hugo the Human Cannonball

**Obituary Notices**

Hugo the Human Cannonball was born to be a circus entertainer. His Daddy was always on hand at every performance to help the audience count from ten to one. But on that "hot sticky August day", neither Hugo, nor his Daddy, could have foretold that things would go awry. All the usual safety precautions were strictly obeyed, including the donning of Hugo's trademark "chromium football helmet." But as Hugo was fired from the cannon that was "thirty feet long" and "soared through the air ... like an Air Force fighter jet", only one thing entered his mind; "he was gonna miss the net." Life was one big blast for Hugo and it seems fitting that he has gone out with a bang.

A memorial service will be held for Hugo the Human Cannonball tomorrow which will be attended by singer/songwriter Ray Stevens. Mr. Stevens has written a dirge which he intends to perform at tomorrow's service before recording it for his forthcoming album 'I Have Returned', due for release in 1985.
10. P. T. Drongo had only one card left to play in order to convince the villagers that their attendance had not been for naught. He huddled his brothers together and ordered them to their caravans to prepare themselves for the dreaded 'Plan Z'. For the next five minutes he engaged the crowd with an apologetic monologue before announcing: "There is all but one thing remaining for the Drongo Brothers to present to you good people. So, without further ado, I quote the title of the well known Stephen Sondheim composition, from the stage musical 'A Little Night Music', when I say it is time to..." ?

Answer: Send in the Clowns

**Final Performance - All Tickets Sold**

The original Broadway run of Stephen Sondheim's 'A Little Night Music' will come to an end tonight at the Majestic Theatre. Having originally premiered at the Shubert Theatre before moving to its current location, this will be performance number 601. If you haven't seen this show yet and don't have a ticket for tonight's performance, you will miss out on seeing Glynis Johns in the role of Desiree performing the song especially written for her by Sondheim, 'Send in the Clowns'. Fear not though, many fine talents have expressed interest in making future recordings of this song. Who you ask? Well, how about Frank Sinatra, Judy Collins, Barbara Streisand and some joker who calls himself Krusty the Klown.
