Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Beatles: "___ Submarine"

Answer: Yellow

The song "Yellow Submarine" was released in 1966. It was part of the album entitled "Revolver". It was written chiefly by Paul McCartney. Ringo Starr sang the lead vocals. It climbed into the second position in the US Billboard Hot 100. Of all the Beatles' songs that were sung by Starr, "Yellow Submarine" was the most popular.

Although originally written as a nonsense song, it received various interpretations and has come to symbolize the "psychedelic set's desire for escape", as "Time" magazine said.
2. Nat King Cole: "___ Colored Sky"

Answer: Orange

The song "Orange Colored Sky" was written by Milton DeLugg and Willie Stein. Nat King Cole recorded it in the summer of 1950 with Stan Kenton's orchestra. Despite the fact that Cole's version is the most well known, the first recording had occurred a month before Cole's and had Janet Brace singing, with the song's co-writer Milton DeLugg conducting the orchestra. Since then, many other artists recorded their own versions of the song, including Natalie Cole, Nat King's daughter.
3. Elvis Presley: "___ Christmas"

Answer: Blue

The song "Blue Christmas" was written by Billy Hayes and J.W. Johnson. The first recording of the song happened in 1948. The singer was Doye O'Dell. Elvis recorded it nine years later, in 1957. His recording was included in the album "Elvis' Christmas Album". Other famous artists who recorded their own versions of the song were Russ Morgan, Billy Eckstine and The Beach Boys.
4. Everly Brothers: "That ___ Haired Daddy of Mine"

Answer: Silver

The song "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" was originally recorded by Gene Autry, an American cowboy entertainer. Autry wrote and performed the song with his friend, Jimmy Long, in 1935. The Everly Brothers recorded it 23 years later, as part of their album "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us". Simon and Garfunkel also recorded the song two times, in the albums "Old Friends" and "Live 1969".
5. Fleetwood Mac: "___ Dust Woman"

Answer: Gold

The song "Gold Dust Woman" was recorded by Fleetwood Mac in 1976. It was released one year later, as part of their album entitled "Rumours". In both the UK and the US editions, it was a B-side song. In the UK version, it was B-side to the single "Don't Stop" and in the US edition it was B-side to the single "You Make Loving Fun".
6. The Jimi Hendrix Experience: "___ Haze"

Answer: Purple

The song "Purple Haze" was written by Jimi Hendrix. It was released in March, 1967. A biographer of Hendrix, Harry Shapiro, stated that Hendrix incorporated a lot of ideas into this song. It is rumored that Hendrix wrote the song while on an LSD trip, based on lines such us "excuse me while I kiss the sky", but no definite connection between the song and drugs can be established.
7. The Rolling Stones: "Paint it, ___"

Answer: Black

The song "Paint It, Black" was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It was released as a single in 1966. The US version of the Stones' album "Aftermath" featured the song as its opening song. In both the UK and the US, the song became very popular, climbing to the top of both the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100.

In 1967, the band The Animals, headed by Eric Burdon, recorded its own version of the song. Some years later, Burdon, now working with the band War, recorded the song once more.
8. Chris de Burgh: "The Lady in ___"

Answer: Red

The song "The Lady in Red" was released in 1986. It was part of de Burgh's album "Into the Light". Chris de Burgh later said that the song was inspired by the time he first met his wife, Diane, and the fact that most men cannot remember their wives' attire at the time of their first meeting.

The song made de Burgh very popular as a performer. However, not everyone was fond of the song, since in a 2000 poll it was ranked among the ten most irritating songs of all time.
9. The Moody Blues: "Nights in ___ Satin"

Answer: White

The song "Nights in White Satin" was released in 1967. It was part of the album "Days of Future Passed". It was written by Justin Hayward and it was inspired by the satin bedsheets he had received from a girlfriend as a gift. Because of the lyrics, the song has become associated with unrequited love.

In the final years of the twentieth century, the English magazine "Record Collector" claimed that it was not Justin Hayward who had written the song, but rather an Italian group called The Jerry Roll.

However, the so-called The Jerry Roll proved to be a French band, which had recorded the song in Italy before the original version reached that country.
10. Creedence Clearwater Revival: "___ River"

Answer: Green

The song "Green River" was released in 1969. It was originally released as a single in July, 1969, but one moth later it was included in the album with the same name. Songwriter John Fogerty said that the inspiration for the song came from a place where he had vacationed named Putah Creek, which is located in California.

The title "Green River" was derived from the soft drink with the same name.
