Compleat the Song Title Trivia Quiz

I was asked to put together a playlist for a friend's summer party. The only rule was no Beatles. But I'm a superfan so I created a playlist that contains Beatles songs within the titles of other songs. Can you compleat the songs?

The party required music that covered the lifetime of the guest of honour so we started with some golden oldies. First up was "( There's) A Fool Such As I" by Elvis Presley followed by " Me Rhonda" by the Beach Boys and finishing with "I'm Into Good" by Herman's Hermits.

Next we have a few songs from the 1970s. We start with a couple of slow ones. First up is "When " by Leo Sayer followed by " Once More" by The Carpenters. Then we up the tempo slightly with "Children of the " by T.Rex before cranking it up with a guaranteed dance floor filler, " Survive" by Gloria Gaynor.

On to the 1980s and I wanted to keep people dancing so I started with Stevie Wonder's tribute to Martin Luther King, "Happy ". Then it's time for another sing-along chorus; "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And )" by R.E.M.

Into the 1990s and we go for a pop ballad to get the slow dance aficionados moving, " Without Wings" by Westlife. That simply has to be followed by a power ballad so it's time for "November " by Guns n Roses.

The 21st century needs to deliver the big finale so it's a couple of bangers to finish. Firstly it's Afroman's " I Got High" and our closer is "Super Freaky " by Nicki Minaj.

Always leave them wanting more.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

"(Now and Then There's) A Fool Such As I" was first recorded by Hank Snow in 1952. Elvis Presley covered it and his release reached the top of the UK singles chart in 1959. "Now and Then" was the final release by The Beatles. Put together from a 1977 demo by John Lennon, instrumental parts and vocals recorded by the surviving Beatles in 1995 and finished by Paul McCartney for release in 2023, it also reached number one in the UK singles chart.

"Help Me Rhonda" by the Beach Boys was first released as "Help Me Ronda" on the 1965 album, "The Beach Boys Today!". It was re-recorded with an added "h" for the same year's album, "Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)". This second version was released as a single and went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. "Help!" was the title track from the 1965 Beatles movie and album. It was a number one hit in multiple countries including The Netherlands, Spain, UK and the US.

"I'm Into Something Good" was the debut single by Herman's Hermits and hit the top of the charts in the UK and in Ireland in 1964. "Something" from the "Abbey Road" album is frequently included on lists of the greatest songs of all-time. It has been covered by artists as diverse as James Brown, Frank Sinatra and Liberace, the latter ensuring, as Harrison laconically admitted, that the song would be "one of them that ends up in an elevator."

"When I Need You" by Leo Sayer was a chart-topper on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK singles chart in 1977 as well as in Canada, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Israel. "I Need You" was a track written by George Harrison and included in The Beatles' 1965 movie and album "Help!".

"Yesterday Once More" by The Carpenters was released as a single in 1973 and reached the top ten of multiple charts around the world including Canada where it reached number one. "Yesterday", another track from The Beatles' 1965 album "Help!", was at one time listed in "Guinness World Records" as the song that had been recorded by more artists than any other with more than 2000 versions. It was never released as a single in the band's native UK but reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the US in 1965.

The 1972 glam rock single "Children of the Revolution" by T.Rex featured Beatle Ringo Starr on drums as well as Elton John on piano. It hit number two on the UK singles chart. "Revolution" was recorded and released in a number of versions in 1968. The original, the B-side to the single "Hey Jude", was a fast-paced rocker. "Revolution 1" was a slower acoustic take that appeared on "The Beatles (The White Album)" while "Revolution 9" was an avant-garde sound collage that appeared on the same album.

The 1978 smash hit "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor has become a disco classic and an anthem of female empowerment. Though it is known as a romantic break-up song, it was initially written by Dino Fekaris as a response to being fired by Motown Records. "I Will" was another track from "The White Album". It only featured three of The Beatles with George Harrison not present when it was recorded.

"Happy Birthday" by Stevie Wonder was written to support the campaign to make Martin Luther King's birthday a national holiday in the US. Released in 1981 it achieved its aim when the new holiday was signed into law two years later. The Beatles' "Birthday" emanated from a jam session and was written and recorded in a single day. It was the opening track of the second disc of "The White Album".

"It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" by R.E.M. is known for its fast-paced lyrics that singer Michael Stipe described as "a collection of streams of consciousness". It was first released on the 1987 album "Document". "I Feel Fine" by The Beatles continued their run of number one hits in the UK and the US in 1965. Notable for its inclusion of feedback at the start of the song, it was a favourite of John Lennon as he had been trying to include its background riff in multiple previous Beatles songs without success.

The Irish boy band Westlife matched the achievements of the Spice Girls by taking all of their first six singles to the top of the UK singles chart. "Flying Without Wings", released in 1999, was the third in that run. "Flying" is a rare song that is credited to all four Beatles as writers, the first to do so. It was also the only instrumental that they released. It featured in the TV movie and EP, "Magical Mystery Tour" (1967)

"November Rain" by Guns n Roses was from their 1991 album "Use Your Illusion I". At nearly nine minutes long, it was the longest song to reach the top ten of the US Billboard Hot 100 in the 20th century. "Rain" was the B-side to "Paperback Writer" and was an early example of the kind of experimentation that The Beatles could introduce to their recordings once they had decided to stop playing live. The guitar and bass tracks were recorded at a fast tempo and then slowed for the final release to create a different texture. They also included backwards-played vocals at the end of the song - an accidental discovery from when John Lennon spooled his recording from the day the wrong way round.

Afroman's "Because I Got High" was an early example of a song that "went viral". A comedy song about how the narrator's life was crumbling due to overuse of drugs, it had first been released on the album of the same name in 2000. But later, thanks to filesharing and exposure on certain radio shows, it became an overnight success in late 2001, reaching the top of several charts across Europe. John Lennon wrote "Because" after listening to Yoko Ono play Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" with the chords reversed. It was released on The Beatles' "Abbey Road" album in 1969, the very last track to be recorded in full for the album.

"Super Freaky Girl" by Nicki Minaj samples the 1981 hit "Super Freak" by Rick James, which was also sampled by MC Hammer for his megahit "U Can't Touch This". It reached number one in New Zealand, Australia and the US in 2022. "Girl" was the last track to be recorded for The Beatles' 1965 album "Rubber Soul". Written mostly by John Lennon it also includes Greek-inspired guitar parts written by Paul McCartney when on holiday in the country.
