Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the lead singer in the Bad Brains?

Answer: HR

Darby Crash (1958-1980) was in the Germs, Choke was in Negative FX, Last Rights and Slapshot and Roger Miret is the lead singer in Agnostic Front.
2. What slogan was associated with Washington DC's Dischord Records?

Answer: Flex Your Head

It was also the title for a Dischord compilation LP released in 1982.
3. What's the song "Glue" by SS Decontrol about?

Answer: Scene unity

It's a song about how the Boston Crew should stick together - like glue.
4. Who played guitar for the Vatican Commandos?

Answer: Moby

Moby played guitar with the Vatican Commandos and also sang with the mighty Flipper for a while when Will Shatter was in prison.
Dave Grohl played drums in Mission Impossible, Dain Bramage and Scream during the eighties. Several succesful (dare I say famous) musicians started out in hardcore.
5. Before Henry Rollins was in Black Flag, he was in...

Answer: SOA

He sang with SOA (State Of Alert) in 1980-1981, when he was still called Henry Garfield.
6. Who did some backing vocals on the "Walk Together, Rock Together" album by 7 Seconds?

Answer: Ian Mackaye

7 Seconds were from Reno, Nevada, but they recorded the album in Washington DC, where Ian Mackaye lives. He sang on several songs from that session.
7. Who agreed to sing back-up vocals on Government Issue's "Boycott Stabb" album but never actually did?

Answer: Jello Biafra

Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra agreed to sing on the album, but GI's singer John Stabb didn't want people to buy the album just because Jello was on it, so the whole thing never happened.
8. Which of these bands/projects did NOT feature Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn?

Answer: The band named All

Ginn is still doing all kinds of strange musical projects, but he was never in All. He did release their records, though. All was basically the Descendents with a different singer.
9. Who played bass guitar with Minor Threat in 1982-1983, when Brian Baker switched to second guitar?

Answer: Steve Hansgen

Minor Threat's 5-piece line-up was awesome, but they became a 4-piece band again a few months before they broke up.
10. Which of these bands released the album "Kill From The Heart" in 1983?

Answer: The Dicks

They released the album on Black Flag's SST Records in 1983. It featured the band's raw punk-blues hybrid and Gary Floyd's insane vocals. It's out of print, sadly.
11. What was originally on the cover of "Victim In Pain", Agnostic Front's 1984 debut album?

Answer: A picture taken in a Nazi death camp

This shocking image was later replaced by a completely black cover - very Spinal Tap indeed! Hardcore punk has a long history of controversy, especially on/near the East Coast.
12. Who was the singer in Washington DC band The Faith?

Answer: Alec Mackaye

Alec, who is Ian Mackaye's younger brother, also sang with the Untouchables and Ignition during the eighties.
The Faith formed in 1981 and broke up in 1983. In Washington DC they were nearly as popular as Minor Threat.
13. When Minor Threat broke up for the first time (in late '81), Ian Mackaye started singing with this short-lived band.

Answer: Skewbald

Skewbald, who were also called Grand Union, lasted for several months. Minor Threat got back together in 1982.
Ian Mackaye played bass with the Teen Idles in 1979-1980 and he sang with Embrace in 1985-1986. He was never in Rites of Spring.
14. "Why can't I walk down the street free of..." Finish this Fugazi lyric.

Answer: ...suggestion?"

The song is called "Suggestion". It's about a woman who sees men watching her all the time and begins to feel like she's a sexual object.
15. Which of these bands released the 1981 album "Hardcore 81"?

Answer: DOA

This great Canadian band is sometimes credited with coining the term "hardcore". Well, in reference to music at least.
I know Canada is not part of the United States, but DOA played the US many, many times.
