Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From "Burn Down The Mission": "Deep in the woods, the __________ are out today, my wife cried when they came to take me away".

Answer: Squirrels

Is it only me that thinks it strange that squirrels would come to take him away? :-) Seriously, though, this classic song is from the album "Tumbleweed Connection", released in the UK in 1970. Strangely, given the excellent content of the album, it produced no UK hit singles.
2. From "Two Rooms At The End Of The World": "Borne our swords like __________ knights on the highway".

Answer: Steel

Another well-known song, the title of the song was used when several of Elton's peers put together an album to celebrate his works. The song itself came from the 1980 album "21 at 33".
3. From "Wicked Dreams": "It's written clear across the room, in silent words the __________ could understand".

Answer: Blind

"Wicked Dreams" is the closing track from Elton's 1997 album "The Big Picture". The album produced the singles "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" (the double-A side with "Candle In The Wind 1997"), "Recover Your Soul" and "If The River Can Bend".
4. From "Legal Boys": "Your accountant called this morning, there was __________ in his heart".

Answer: Springtime

The song is from the 1982 album "Jump Up", and is notable in that the lyrics for the song were written by one Tim Rice. Elton and Tim went on to create the Oscar-winning music to the Disney film "The Lion King" some 12 years later.
5. From "Dan Dare (Pilot Of The Future)": "If he'd been here now, holy cow, my stars might have been read on the planet __________".

Answer: Mars

Taken from the 1975 album "Rock Of The Westies", which produced one major hit in the US, "Island Girl" got to no.1 there, although it didn't reach the top 10 in the UK.
6. From "Indian Sunset": "And the red sun sinks at last into the hills of __________".

Answer: Gold

In my view a glorious song, this hails from the 1971 album "Madman Across The Water". The album produced no UK chart hits, although it did produce two in the US - "Tiny Dancer" and "Levon".
7. From "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters": "I thought I knew, but now I know that __________ trees never grow in New York City".

Answer: Rose

I always thought roses grew on bushes rather than trees. Might be wrong! Anyway, this song comes from the album "Honky Chateau", released in 1972. The album produced two singles - "Rocket Man" and "Honky Cat".
8. From "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters (Part 2)": "Inner city __________ argue for the right to self-defence".

Answer: Prisoners

Taken from the album "Reg Strikes Back" from 1988, this song is a follow-up to the song in the previous question. Amazing that they should write a sequel to a song some 16 years later! The album itself produced three singles, "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That", "Town Of Plenty" (not in the US) and "A Word In Spanish" (not in the UK).
9. From "Skyline Pigeon": "I want to hear the __________ bells of distant churches sing, but most of all please free me from this aching metal ring".

Answer: Pealing

From Elton's first solo album "Empty Sky" in 1969. This song has been said to be the first that Elton and Bernie Taupin felt they were completely happy with the way it turned out.
10. From "Belfast": "The enemy is not at home, a jealous green streaks down this faulty __________".

Answer: Diamond

Taken from the album "Made In England", released in 1995. The album produced the singles "Believe", "Made In England" and "Please".
11. From "I Don't Care": "I got __________ piling up the hall, I got paint peeling off the wall, I got you, I'm a happy man".

Answer: Bills

Taken from the album "A Single Man" from 1978. The album produced two singles, "Part Time Love" and the classic "Song For Guy". The lyrics for this song were written by Gary Osborne.
12. From "The Emperor's New Clothes": "And our __________ were rusty but we wore them proudly".

Answer: Halos

Taken from the album "Songs From The West Coast" from 2001. The album also produced the top 10 hit "I Want Love", plus two others - "This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore" and "Original Sin".
13. From "Spotlight": "But I'll show this __________ is more than ready, I sure got something to prove".

Answer: Kid

Taken from the 1979 album "Victim Of Love", an album that took Elton briefly into the realms of disco. Dismissed by critics, the album didn't do particularly well. Elton had no hand in the writing of this song - the music was by Stefan Wisnet and Gunther Moll and the lyrics were by Pete Bellotte.
14. From "I Fall Apart": "And I fall apart, with this threat of __________ hanging in my heart".

Answer: Indecision

From the album "Leather Jackets", an often forgotten album from 1986. The album actually produced two singles, although neither did particularly well. The first was "Heartache All Over The World" and the second was "Slow Rivers", a duet with Cliff Richard.
15. From "Duets For One": "Look at you, could I have been so foolish and so __________".

Answer: Green

From the "Duets" album. All the songs on the album were, unsurprisingly, duets except the last one - the song "Duets For One" which was performed by Elton alone. The lyrics for this song were written by Chris Difford. The album itself produced three singles - "True Love" with Kiki Dee, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" with RuPaul and "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" with Marcella Detroit.
16. From "Shoot Down The Moon": "Just as long as you're around, we live on __________ time".

Answer: Borrowed

From the album "Ice On Fire" from 1985. The song contained four singles - "Nikita", "Cry To Heaven", "Wrap Her Up" and "Act Of War". "Wrap Her Up" contained the uncredited extra vocals of George Michael, and "Act Of War" was a duet with Millie Jackson.
17. From "Blue Avenue": "You linger on my lips like __________, you laid the traps in this house".

Answer: Confession

From the album "Sleeping With The Past" from 1989. This very beautiful song is also a very sad one and is about a relationship break-up. The album itself produced several UK singles - "Healing Hands", "Sacrifice", a year later "Sacrifice/Healing Hands" (!) which was Elton's first UK solo number 1 and "Club At The End Of The Street/Whispers".
18. From "Ticking": "At St. __________ every Sunday, Father Fletcher heard your sins, 'Oh he's unconcerned with competition, he never cares to win'".

Answer: Patrick's

A very sad song about a boy who suddenly flips and holds a bar full of people hostage with a gun. The song is from the album "Caribou", released in 1974. The album produced the singles "The Bitch Is Back" and the world-famous "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me".
19. From "Country Comfort": "Now the old fat goose is flying cross the sticks, the __________'s done in clay between the bricks".

Answer: Hedgehog

Another song from the fantastic "Tumbleweed Connection" album of 1970.
20. From "Have Mercy On The Criminal": "Have you heard the __________ at night, somewhere on the hill".

Answer: Dogs

Taken from the album "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player" from 1973. The album produced two singles - "Daniel" and "Crocodile Rock".
21. From "One More Arrow": "He said 'I want to grow up and look like __________ __________'".

Answer: Robert Mitchum

Taken from the album "Too Low For Zero", released in 1983. The album was his first real success after the peak of his chart successes in the 70s and included four UK hits, two of which reached the top 5.
22. From "Fascist Faces": "If the boy had been blessed he'd have been arrested, on a charge of wearing red __________".

Answer: Shoes

Taken from the album "The Fox" from 1981. The album produced just one single, "Nobody Wins", which didn't do particularly well in the UK.
23. From "I Think I'm Going To Kill Myself": "A rift in my family, I can't use the car, I gotta be in by __________ o'clock, who do they think they are?".

Answer: Ten

Taken from the album "Honky Chateau" from 1972. This song is quite fascinating, as despite the lyrics about wanting to commit suicide the music to the song is incredibly fast, bubbly and happy!
24. From "Understanding Women": "I could drive to __________ on understanding women".

Answer: Mexico

Taken from the album "The One", which was released in 1992. The song produced four singles in the UK, the top 10 hit "The One", plus "Runaway Train" (with Eric Clapton), the haunting "The Last Song" and "Simple Life".
25. From "Cage The Songbird": "The cellophane on the flowers, the __________ still in her hand".

Answer: Telegram

Taken from the 1976 album "Blue Moves", Elton's second double album. The song itself is a tribute to Edith Piaf, and unusually there was a second person credited with doing the music alongside Elton - one of his band members, Davey Johnstone. The album produced three singles in the UK, the well-known "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word", plus "Crazy Water" and "Bite Your Lip (Get Up And Dance)".

The last of these was a double A-side, with the other song being "Chicago" by Kiki Dee.
