Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Founded in 1948, which American vocal group had success with records such as "Mood Indigo" and "Graduation Day"?

Answer: The Four Freshmen

The Four Freshmen evolved out of a barbershop harmony group started by two brothers attending Butler University. The were noted for their mellow, close harmony, jazz style of singing. Their big break came in 1950 when Stan Kenton saw them perform and got them an audition at Capital Records. Over the years they have been nominated for six Grammy Awards.
2. "It's Four in the Morning" was a hit for Faron Young, but who wrote it?

Answer: Jerry Chesnut

Released in 1971 this waltz time ballad was the last number one hit on the Country charts for Faron Young. In addition to this Jerry Chesnut has written "Good Year for the Roses" and "T-R-O-U-B-L-E".
3. "Positively 4th Street" is a well known Bob Dylan Title, but which is another '4' song of his?

Answer: 4th Time Around

"4th Time Around" appears on the 1966 album, "Blonde on Blonde". Written by Dylan, it is often seen as a parody of The Beatles "Norwegian Wood". John Lennon himself expressed the opinion that it was meant as a parody, but Bob Dylan has never commented on this.
4. The Four Seasons were popular throughout the 1960s. Who was their lead singer?

Answer: Frankie Valli

With hits such as "Sherry" and "Big Girls Don't Cry", both of which were number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons were popular throughout the 1960s. They then dropped into relative obscurity until a musical, "Jersey Boys", based on their songs premiered in 2005.

When this transferred to Broadway it proved a massive hit, garnering several Tony Awards. Touring productions have played in London, Toronto. Melbourne and Sydney.
5. The Boo Radleys were quite fond of the number four. One of their songs is "Four Saints", which is another?

Answer: 4AM Conversation

The Boo Radleys took their name from a character in "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Formed in 1988 they released six studio albums between then and their break up in 1999. Only one, "Wake Up" had commercial success, reaching number one on the album charts.

Their highest single chart position was nine with "Wake Up Boo" from the "Wake Up" album. "4AM Conversation" was an album track that was never released as a single.
6. "Four Walls" is a country song that many people have recorded. Who had the 1957 number one hit with it?

Answer: Jim Reeves

All of the above recorded the song, but Jim Reeves had the Country chart number one in 1957. It was also a crossover hit for him reaching number 12 on the Pop chart. The song was written by Marvin Moore and George Campbell. Ronnie Milsap recorded it after Jim Reeves died. He included it on a tribute album of ten songs, all of which were hits for Jim.
7. The Four Lads were popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Where were they from?

Answer: Canada

The four founder members of The Four Lads grew up together in Toronto and attended the same choir school, which is where they learned their close harmony singing. Their first gold record came in 1953 with " Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" and they followed that up with "Moments To Remember" in 1955 and, in the same year, "Standing on the Corner".
8. The Four Tops are most associated with which sound?

Answer: Motown

The Four Tops are among the groups who defined Motown in the 1960s. Unlike many of the other groups, such as The Temptations and The Miracles, they had a baritone, Levi Stubbs, as their lead singer rather than a tenor. For many years most of their records were written by the formidable writing team of Holland-Dozier-Holland.

They were responsible for such hits as "Reach Out I'll Be There" and "I Can't Help Myself".
9. Which '4' song is this lyric from? "But it all tumbled down when we ambushed the town In the night how the metal was flying Well we blew it to hell, Really did our job well But just the women and kids did the dying"

Answer: Born on the Fourth of July

Written and recorded by Tom Paxton, "Born on the Fourth of July" is not the patriotic anthem the title would suggest. In fact it is a very powerful anti war song. The best known version is the recording by Bruce Springsteen.
10. Noted for quite complex recordings, which British group made "House of Four Doors"?

Answer: The Moody Blues

Written by John Lodge, this song appeared on the 1968 album "In Search of The Lost Chord". On this album it is in two parts, with the two parts being separated by another track. On later compilation albums it has been released as an entire track. Even by Moody Blues standards this is a very complex recording featuring instruments as diverse harpsichord, cello, flute and mellotron.
