3. This is a German punk rock band who's existed since the beginning of the eighties. They've somehow made their way and still have lots of fans, although they are likely to cause some controversy now and then, especially when talking about soccer. Hint

Question 4 of 10

Their music is also a kind of punk rock, and their songs include "Schrei nach Liebe", "Drei-Tage-Bart", "Männer sind Schweine", "Westerland" and "Gehen wie ein Ägypter" ("Walk Like An Egyptian"). Question 5 of 10
5. I've heard several people describe this singer as the "German Phil Collins". I don't know if it's true, I've never been really interested in neither of them. But he's been around for years, and no doubt he's one of Germany's most famous singers. He had smash hits like "Männer", "Bochum", "Vollmond" and "Was soll das?", and he celebrated a great comeback last year (2001/2002) with his No. 1 hit album "Mensch". Do you know his name? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. This singer is also one of the "rock stars of old" in the German music scene. His first single "Du" (1971) was an immense success, and he's been famous ever since. The 1984 album "Caramboulage", featuring songs such as "Karneval der Nacht", "Mensch aus Stahl" and "Er hat sich gewehrt", might have been his greatest success. He also created the radio drama "Tabaluga", a story for children about a little dragon who has to grow up and learns to come to terms with life, featuring the unforgettable songs "Ich wollte nie erwachsen sein", "Eis im September", and "Der Baum des Lebens" (among others). Do you know who he is? Hint

7. This is one of my favorite bands. They consist of a Irish lead singer and four other German band members. Ever heard of them? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Last but not least: One of the most successful German Hip Hop bands. The only Hip Hop band I like, to be honest. They're really quite funny. Their greates hits are probably "Sie ist weg" and "Populär", other songs include "Die da" and "MfG". There are four band members - if you never heard of them, you might guess the band name if you know the German word for "four" :) Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This German rock band is surely one of the most successful bands of the world. They have existed for nearly thirty years now, and they're really famous all over the world. Their songs include No. 1 hits like "Wind of Change", "Still Loving You", "Send Me An Angel", "Rock You Like A Hurricane", and "Holiday". They are called The...

Answer: Scorpions

They're from Hanover. Lead singer Klaus Meine turned 55 on May 25, 2003, but he's still acting like he was twenty years younger. Quite a common phenomenon with those rockers :)
2. I've been told that this band has enjoyed quite a success in the U.S. Their lyrics are German, their music is some kind of Industrial Metal, and their show is simply amazing - a lot of pyrotechnics. They released their first hit single, "Engel", in 1997. Other songs are "Heirate Mich", "Du Hast", "Du Riechst So Gut", "Sonne", and "Mutter". Do you know which band I'm talking about?

Answer: Rammstein

Of course, Rammstein. If you happen to know the other bands I've given in the multiple choice answers, don't be too upset about my putting them next to Rammstein. I know they're not exactly on the same level... Rammstein's lead singer is called Till Lindemann. The songs "Heirate Mich" and "Rammstein" were featured on the soundtrack of the 1997 David Lynch movie "Lost Highway".
3. This is a German punk rock band who's existed since the beginning of the eighties. They've somehow made their way and still have lots of fans, although they are likely to cause some controversy now and then, especially when talking about soccer. Their songs have included "Return of Alex", "All die ganzen Jahre", "Alles aus Liebe", "Unsterblich", "Paradies", "Was zählt", and the hilarious "Zehn kleine Jägermeister". Have you heard of them?

Answer: Die Toten Hosen

Three of the five band members are called Andreas, but they all have nicknames; like, the lead singer is known as Campino. They're from the area which is known as the "Ruhrpott" in Germany, that is, the area around Cologne (Ruhr Area). The people there are famous for their slang, called "Kodderschnauze" (impossible to translate that!) - "kodderig" is an adjective used in Northern Germany; it means "insolent" or "impertinent", so you can imagine what they talk like :) If you know a little German and wonder at the band's name... it's probably derived from the German idiomatic expression "hier ist total tote Hose", meaning "there's nothing going on here", "dead boring".
4. This band has repeatedly labeled themselves "The best band of the world". They also came up during the eighties and have earned themselves quite a reputation. They're known for breaking taboos (they had a song about sodomy, for instance) and for causing quite a fuss everywhere they go. Their music is also a kind of punk rock, and their songs include "Schrei nach Liebe", "Drei-Tage-Bart", "Männer sind Schweine", "Westerland" and "Gehen wie ein Ägypter" ("Walk Like An Egyptian"). Who are they?

Answer: Die Ärzte

The "doctors'" lead singer is called Farin Urlaub (that's a pseudonym - if you spell it differently, you get "Fahr in Urlaub", which means "go on vacation"...); he started a solo career about two years ago and was quite successful. One of their songs, "Männer sind Schweine", had a quote from "Some Like It Hot" in it (the dubbed version, of course, so I can't give it to you here).

Answer: Herbert Grönemeyer

Impossible to imagine the German music scene without Grönemeyer. His music doesn't really appeal to me, but his lyrics are often very intelligent and give you something to think about. When I went to church last Christmas, the vicar actually centered his sermon around the lyrics of "Mensch"! Or was that two years ago...? Whatever, Grönemeyer also played the main role in a movie about the composer Robert Schumann a few years ago (co-starring Nastassja Kinski), and he was really good.

Answer: Peter Maffay

German comedian Jürgen von der Lippe includes an impression on him in each of his shows. Peter Maffay's often been made fun of by comedians because of his accent (he's of Romanian origin), which is simply predestined to be imitated. His songs, however, often include social criticism, dealing with topics such as loss of individuality, poverty, or violence.

His "Tabaluga" story has been turned into a musical and went on tour in 1999.
7. This is one of my favorite bands. They consist of a Irish lead singer and four other German band members. Their first hit single, "Supergirl" (1999), stayed on top of the hit list for several weeks. Other songs include "Josephine", "Waiting There For You", "Life Is A Dream", and the beautiful "Weep". Ever heard of them?

Answer: Reamonn

Named after lead singer Rea Garvey. They've just released a new single called "Star" (as of June 2003). Together with German singer Xavier Naidoo they recorded a cover version of Falco's "Jeanny" in 2001 - one of the best cover versions I've ever heard. Keep a look out for them, they're really fantastic!
8. This German rock band (well, Crossover, to be exact) came up in 1998 with their smash hit "Open Your Eyes", followed by the singles "Rain" and "Lords of the Boards". More recent songs include "Don't You Turn Your Back On Me", "Kumbayah" (with comedian Michael Mittermeier), and "Living In A Lie". Do you know what they are called?

Answer: Guano Apes

I think they're known in the U.S., too. I'm pretty sure I saw their album "Proud Like A God" in a CD store when I was in Florida. The lead singer is called Sandra Nasic. Maybe that's also part of their fame - there are not too many band who do Crossover who have a female lead singer.
9. She was one of Germany's most famous singers during the eighties. Her smash hit "99 Luftballons" went around the world (and I always hated it!). There's an English version of the song called "99 Red Balloons". Other songs include "Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann" and "Leuchtturm". Give me her name.

Answer: Nena

I can't stand her, but Nena is really famous. She recently celebrated her comeback, re-released all her old songs (remixed), and she re-recorded "Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann" together with Kim Wilde and with half of the lyrics translated into English.
10. Last but not least: One of the most successful German Hip Hop bands. The only Hip Hop band I like, to be honest. They're really quite funny. Their greates hits are probably "Sie ist weg" and "Populär", other songs include "Die da" and "MfG". There are four band members - if you never heard of them, you might guess the band name if you know the German word for "four" :)

Answer: Die Fantastischen Vier

One of them, Thomas D, has also started a solo career, and he recorded the song "Wish (Komm zu mir)" together with actress Franka Potente for the soundtrack of the Tom Tykwer movie "Lola rennt" ("Run Lola Run"). For me, the band's masterpiece is "MfG", because it's so, well, original. The lyrics only consist of abbreviations ("ARD, ZDF und USA..." and so on). It has become very common in Germany to replace sentences or expressions with abbreviations. MfG, for example, stands for "Mit freundlichen Grüßen", which is the standard complimentary close for a business letter (something like "Yours, sincerely"), and many people are annoyed by that. This abbreviation mania is what the song is about.

I hope I got you interested in some of the bands :)
