Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I worked as a rock critic before becoming the lead singer/guitarist of my own band, whose members were all English, except for me. At the height of my band's fame, our guitarist and bassist died of drug overdoses within a year of one other. I am the mother of two children, one with lead singer Ray Davies of the Kinks, and one with lead singer Jim Kerr of Simple Minds. Who am I?

Answer: Chrissie Hynde

The debut album of Chrissie Hynde's band, The Pretenders, has been listed by both Rolling Stone Magazine and VH1 as one of the best albums of all time. Ray Davies was also the father of The Pretenders' first hit, "Stop Your Sobbing," originally an early Kinks song.

Chrissie Hynde was a student at Ohio's Kent State University in 1970 at the time of the Kent State riots. A dedicated animal rights activist, Hynde was arrested in 2001 for protesting the Gap's use of black market leather from India. The arrest may have had something to do with the fact she and other protesters were INSIDE the store at the time.
2. With my androgynous look, primitive musicianship, and wild live performances, I chanted, screamed, and sang my poetry, effectively paving the way for punk music. My debut album was named in Rolling Stone's Top 100 list as one of the all-time greatest albums, but my only top 20 single, co-written with Bruce Springsteen, didn't come out until later. Who am I?

Answer: Patti Smith

Patti Smith began her live shows by reciting her poetry, which she read increasingly faster until the rock music started and she broke into song. Her critically acclaimed debut album, "Horses" came out in 1975. In 1977 she, broke her neck when she feel fourteen feet from a stage to the concrete floor. She recuperated and went on to record her Billboard #13 hit (written with Springsteen), "Because the Night" in 1978.

Incidentally, guitarist/singer/songwriter Joan Jett was founder of the first all-girl hard rock band, The Runaways. Sinead O'Connor is one of the many women artists listed in this quiz who did not have to rely on their sexuality to sell their music. With her unrevealing clothes and (often) shaved head, O'Connor could also be considered androgynous and, while she writes most of her own songs, her biggest hit was the Prince song, Nothing Compares 2U.
3. In the '90s, I became known as the world's top female DJ/producer/musician. I am a classically trained pianist who also plays saxophone, violin, and bass. I use a pseudonym and am probably best-known for my work as a member of the band "Faithless" with Rollo Armstrong, Maxi Jazz, and others. Who am I?

Answer: Sister Bliss

After discovering house music in 1987, Sister Bliss blossomed into one of the foremost English DJs, and most renowned female DJ in the world. Sister Bliss is forthcoming in interviews but rarely speaks onstage. Her real name is Ayalah Bentovin. Her band mate Rollo is the brother of singer Dido (who got her start singing background vocals for "Faithless" and later sang lead on their great collaboration, "One Step Too Far.")

Mira Aroyo is a member of the alternative dance band Ladytron. Ellen Allien is a Berlin-based DJ.
4. As the drummer for a seminal 1960s underground rock band, I played standing up and used mallets instead of drumsticks. Many consider me to be the first female rock musician. I went by the nickname "Mo." Who am I?

Answer: Maureen Tucker

In 1965, drummer Maureen "Mo" Tucker became the first female rock musician (not behind a microphone) when she joined the proto-glam rock band The Velvet Underground after their first drummer quit. At the time, 21-year-old Maureen "Mo" Tucker had only been playing drums for two years.

Patti Smith is the proto-punker known as the "poet laureate of punk rock." Shelia E. is the '80s drum virtuoso and solo artist. Janet Weiss is the hard-rocking drummer of the band Sleater-Kinney.
5. In the U.S., only one of my singles ("Help Me") ever broke the top 20, but I am considered to be one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the late 20th century. I started as a folksinger and am an innovative guitarist, with songs written in over 50 different tunings. A visual artist at heart, my own paintings or photographs grace the covers of all of my albums. Who am I?

Answer: Joni Mitchell

Amazing, isn't it? As great a song as "Big Yellow Taxi" is, in the U.S. it only charted #24. In the U.K., however, her classic "Big Yellow Taxi" (1970) peaked at #11. While Mitchell only had one Top 20 (TWENTY) U.S. hit, she did have three others in the Top 40 (FORTY): Free Man in Paris (1974) #22,,Big Yellow Taxi (1974) #24, You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio (1972) #25, and Snakes and Ladders (1988) #32.

Rolling Stone magazine hails Joni Mitchell as one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Her exceptional, confessional lyrics and beautiful melodies have inspired countless notable artists, including: Prince, Norah Jones, Indigo Girls, Jackson Browne, Rickie Lee Jones, Billy Joel, Ani Di Franco, Fiona Apple, and Heart. As a singer, Mitchell once had a range of over four octaves, but a lifetime of chain-smoking (since the age of nine) has since roughened her voice. Her "favorite line in all of literature" is from the Rudyard Kipling novel, Kim: 'My people are the wisest people in the jungle, my people have always said so.'"
6. I was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I am known as royalty in my genre. Some have called me the greatest vocalist of all time. Born in Tennessee and raised in Detroit, I was promoted to soloist in my father's gospel choir when I was 12. My first acting role, small but memorable, was in a comedy starring Dan Aykroyd (and others).

Answer: Aretha Franklin

Known for her astounding singing voice, Aretha Franklin has enjoyed multiple million-selling singles and has co-written several of her songs, including the 1968 hit "Think." In 1970, Franklin released a staggering four albums. Her cameo in the hit Belushi & Aykroyd film, "Blues Brothers" (1980) rekindled her career. As a testament to Franklin's talent, at the 1998 Grammy Awards, she replaced opera star Luciano Pavorotti at the last minute to sing Puccini's "Nessun Dorma."

Several parallels exist between the lives of Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner. Both were born in Tennessee. Franklin is known as the Queen of Soul; Turner is often referred to as the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll. They both enjoyed big career comebacks in the 80s, and both were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Tina, however, was not inducted until four years after Franklin, her father was not a preacher, and she is known more for her sizzling performances than for the power of her singing voice.
7. In 2002, Time Magazine named me "America's Best Songwriter." My music is a blend of folk, rock, and Southern blues. As a singer-songwriter, I received critical acclaim for my music for many years but did not achieve commercial success until the age of 48, with the release of my album, "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road." My first album was called "Ramblin'on My Mind." I am from Louisiana and sing with a Southern twang. My father was an Inaugural poet who read at Bill Clinton's 1993 Inauguration.

Answer: Lucinda Williams

Lucinda Williams has been called the "female Bob Dylan" (but she sings better.) Though she made her first album in 1979, Williams' big break did not come until 1998, when she released her multiple Grammy award-winning successful album, "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road." Interestingly, Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams share similar circumstances in their musical careers (both took up guitar at age 12, both had commercial success late in life, both have a rock-country-blues flavor to their music), but Bonnie Raitt's father was a Broadway musical star, not a poet. Also, Raitt hails from California, not Louisiana, and she was 40 (not 48) when one of her albums (Nick of Time-1989) finally soared to the top of the charts.
8. I am a songwriter, producer, performer, and talent scout with a genius IQ. I have penned a number of hit singles for R&B artists and others, but I am best known for my solo work. My great sense of humor shines in my music, and one of my trademarks is my giggle. I prefer that people not use the word "misdemeanor" in connection with me. Who am I?

Answer: Missy Elliott

Missy Elliott used to bill herself as Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, but has since gotten rid of the "Misdemeanor." She began her musical career as a singer in a short-lived R&B group called Sista. As a solo rap artist, her first five albums all went platinum. Growing up in Virginia, Missy Elliott was known to write out songs on her bedroom wall. Co-producer/songwriter Timbaland has been her good friend since childhood. Her single, "Work It" (from the album Under Construction - 2002) holds an unusual record.

It stayed at #2 for ten straight weeks without ever going to #1 -- the only other song to do that since Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You" in 1981.
9. I was the bass player for a popular '80s alternative rock band. Vocally, I was mostly relegated to singing back-up, but in the next group I formed, I became the lead singer (and instrumentalist), and that band did very well, too. I was also a cheerleader in high school.

Answer: Kim Deal and Tina Weymouth

Who would have thought it? Both Kim Deal and Tina Weymouth were cheerleaders in high school. After the initial break-up of her band, the Pixies, bassist Kim Deal launched a new band called The Breeders, with Deal on lead vocals and guitar. This band also did very well, with the single "Cannonball" going platinum in 1993. Bassist Tina Weymouth, formerly of the Talking Heads, continued her musical success with the Tom Tom Club, which had a top 40 hit, "Genius of Love" in 1982. Coincidentally, both bassists were also cheerleaders in high school.

Kim Gordon -- bass player for the no wave/post-punk band Sonic Youth -- has never said she was a cheerleader. Canadian-born Melissa Auf der Maur did play bass for two successful rock bands (Hole and Smashing Pumpkins), but she wasn't the lead singer. Jennifer Finch is former bassist for the '90s all-girl punk band L7.
10. I am best known as a singer, but have also acted in movies and written music, including songs for a famous Disney film. In 1999, I was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. One of my albums was titled "Beauty and the Beat!" Here are lyrics from two songs for which I am most famous: "My eyes light up when you call my name, 'cause I know you're gonna treat me right" and "Let's break out the booze and have a ball." Who am I?

Answer: Peggy Lee

The lyrics are from "Fever" and "Is That All There Is?" respectively. Born in 1920, jazz/swing/pop singer Peggy Lee pushed the envelope of popular music. She was one of the first recording artists to incorporate Latin rhythms into her music, and she often chose songs written by "non-commercial" composers. Best known for her rich, inviting voice, Lee was also a talented lyricist whose compositions include songs for Disney's "Lady and the Tramp" (1955), (in which she also performed the voice of the dastardly Siamese cats.)

Belinda Carlisle is the lead singer of the Go-Go's, which also had a 1981 album called "Beauty and the Beat." Lee's album, "Beauty and the Beat!" came out in 1958.
