Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This woman was one of the first women in rock music with her debut album in 1967. She was also one of the first women to join "The 27 Club" in 1970. Who was she?

Answer: Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin was a rock star in the 1960's. She had a powerful, angry singing voice. She is famous mostly for cover songs like "Me and Bobby McGee,""Piece of My Heart" and "Cry Baby." Most of her cover songs became more popular than their original counterparts. She also wrote the song "Move Over" which was covered by glam rock bands Slade and Cinderella.

She died at age 27 in 1970, around the same time as other rock stars such as Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison who also died at age 27. This is what made people start the "27" club for significant musicians at who died at 27.
2. This Cuban singer's "Rhythm is Going to Get You" to "Get on Your Feet." Who was she?

Answer: Gloria Estefan

Gloria Estefan was a Latin pop star. She was famous for songs that were catchy, fun to dance to, and uplifting. If you are feeling depressed, the perfect thing to do is get on your feet and listen to "Get On Your Feet." In her prime, she was beautiful and she was a great singer and dancer. Her band Miami Sound Machine accompanied her vocals very well and will have you dancing if you wish. She has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, making her the most famous musical product ever to come from Cuba. I feel like most pop stars should learn a lot from her.

Her hits include dance songs like "Conga," "Get on Your Feet," "Rhythm is Going to Get You," and "1-2-3" as well as ballads like "Coming Out of the Dark" "Don't Wanna Lose You," "Anything For You," and "Words Get in the Way." There is a musical play dedicated to her called "On Your Feet."
3. I am absolutely sure that this singer had huge success with her band's hits "Don't Speak" and "It's My Life" as well as solo hits like "Hollaback Girl" and "The Sweet Escape." Who was she?

Answer: Gwen Stefani

The reason I'm absolutely sure is because the name of her band was No Doubt. No Doubt was an alternative rock band from the mid 1990's. They were most famous for their album, "Trapped Kingdom" which has sold over 16 million copies worldwide. Their signature song was "Don't Speak," which was number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for 16 weeks and was number one on many other charts too. Other hit songs from that album were "Spiderwebs" and "Just a Girl." Seven singles were released on that album, all of which charted somewhere.

After that album, their popularity died down. However, their greatest hits album included a cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life" which became a hit.

After No Doubt broke up, Gwen Stefani had a successful solo career. Her first solo album "Love. Angel. Music. Baby." sold over seven million copies worldwide and had the hits "What Are You Waiting For?" "Rich Girl," "Hollaback Girl," "Cool," and "Luxurious." Her second solo album, "The Sweet Escape," was also a hit thanks mostly to its title track.

Stefani is believed to have sold over 30 million albums worldwide when you combine her work with No Doubt and her solo work. VH1 ranked her at #13 on their list of the 100 best women in music.
4. This woman and her sister Nancy certainly had the music in them. They formed a rock band which had hard rock hits like "Barracuda" as well as successful pop ballads like "What About Love?" What is the name of the singer?

Answer: Ann Wilson

Steve Fossen formed the band Heart in 1967. Ann Wilson joined the band in 1970 and sister Nancy joined in 1974. Heart started off as a rock band. They found success in the 1970's with hits like "Magic Man" and "Barracuda." The latter has one of the most iconic guitar riffs ever created.

In the 80's, their popularity declined. So they re-invented themselves as a ballad band in 1985. With the help of producer Ron Nevison, Heart created the number one hits "Alone" and "These Dreams" as well as many other top 10 hits including "What About Love," "Never," and "Nothin' At All." Heart were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

Her hits include "I Will Always Love You," "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors," and "9 to 5." Some of these songs also became hits for other artists."I Will Always Love You" was a huge hit for Whitney Houston. The White Stripes' cover of "Jolene" charted in the top 20 on the UK top 100 chart.
6. This woman was born in America, but she wrote songs in Spanish. Her signature album is "Amor Prohibido" which translates to "Forbidden Love" in English. Her signature song is "Como la Flor" which translates to "Like a Flower." She was murdered at age 23 by the so-called president of her fan club. What is her first name?

Answer: Selena

Selena was one of the most popular and influential Latin pop stars of all time. When she was six years old, her father discovered that she was an incredible singer, and encouraged her to get into music. She would often sing at his restaurant until it closed down. In 8th grade, her father took her out of school so she could start her music career. Her teachers were not happy about this, but her father didn't care.

Selena released her debut album in 1989. That album peaked at number seven on the U.S. Regional Mexican Albums chart.

A nurse name Yolanda Saldivar started a fan club in San Antonio after attending a Selena concert.

Selena made her breakthrough album in 1992 with an album called "Entre a Mi Mundo" which in English would be called "Enter My World." This album went six times platinum and had the signature song "Como la Flor."

In 1994 Selena released her most popular album "Amor Prohibido." This album was certified double-diamond by RIAA and had several number one hits including the title track, "Foto's y Recuerdos" or "Photographs and Memories," and "No Me Queda Mas" or "There's Nothing Left For Me." This album was in Billboard Magazine's top 100 albums of all time.

In 1995, Saldivar shot Selena after Selena had demanded that Saldivar hand over the financial statements of her fan club.
7. This woman named her first three albums after the age she was when she recorded them. One of her biggest hits also has one of the craziest song titles ever because most people know that water puts out fire not vice-versa. Who is she?

Answer: Adele

Adele is a highly successful soul songwriter from the UK. With only three albums at the time this quiz was created, she had already sold over 100 million albums worldwide. That means each of her albums on average has sold 33 million copies worldwide! 10 million sales of one album is considered a massive success. Her albums are titled "19," "21," and "25," all of which are the age she was when she recorded that album. "21" is her most successful album so far, and one of the most successful albums anyone has ever recorded. That album earned a record-tying six grammies and is the 4th-highest selling album ever in the UK. In the U.S. the album is certified diamond and Adele is the first woman in history to have three songs in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart simultaneously and she is also the first woman to have two albums simultaneously in the Billboard top 200. Her hit songs include "Rolling in the Deep," "Someone Like You," and the strangely titled "Set Fire to the Rain."

She has been criticized for her weight but says that she makes music for ears, not eyes.
8. This woman was the lead singer of Til Tuesday. Then she had a solo career. Who was she?

Answer: Aimee Mann

Aimee Mann was the lead singer of Til Tuesday. Til Tuesday are an 80's pop group known for their hit song "Voices Carry," a song about a boyfriend trying to oppress his girlfriend. Til Tuesday broke up in 1990, and then Mann continued on as a solo artist.
9. This pop-country singer taught us all that screaming "Man!" is a great way to feel proud of your femininity. She was at one point married to legendary producer Mutt Lange. Who is she?

Answer: Shania Twain

Shania Twain is a country singer/songwriter from the U.S. She is one of the top selling artists of all time. Her third album, "Come on Over" has sold over 40 million copies world wide, making it one of the top 10 selling albums of all time at the time this quiz was created.

This album has many hit songs like "That Don't Impress Me Much," "From This Moment On," and her best song and probably most popular song, "Man! I Feel Like a Woman." I'm not sure if that title is intentionally ironic or not. She also has an album called "The Woman in Me," which has sold over 20 million copies world wide, and "Up!" which was certified diamond and has the song "I'm Gonna Getcha Good." To have three out of five albums be this successful is pretty darn impressive.
10. This woman was known for one of the most popular songs ever written, in which she shouts "Tin roof rusted." She also encouraged you to "Roam if you want to." Who was she?

Answer: Cindy Wilson

Cindy Wilson was one of the lead singers of the B-52s. The B-52s were a co-ed pop band that often used call-and-response vocals between a man and a woman, the man being Fred Schneider. They were most famous for their 1989 hit song "Love Shack," which is about a real building in Athens Georgia.

As the song said, this building is right off the Atlanta Highway. Keyboardist Kate Pierson used to live in that building. The building did indeed have a tin roof. And to avoid being a one-hit wonder, the B-52s also had a hit song called "Roam."
