Hard Core Van Halen 1 Trivia Quiz

This is my first quiz and I hope it's a good one. Van Halen is the greatest band in the world and this is the first of many and focuses more on the early days, and even pre-stardom.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Van Halen's first manager?

Answer: Marshall Berle

Milton Berle is a famous comedian; Marshall is his nephew and got the band signed by Ted Templeman (who is with Warner Bros). Mick Jones was a producer for two of the albums.
2. Who helped construct 5150, Ed's recording studio in his backyard?

Answer: Don Landee

Eddie was in that studio every day. Don was Ed's engineer and helped create "1984". Alex even said that he (himself) only participated in playing on the album, he didn't create it at all. Eddie did it all.
3. Which two albums went diamond internationally (which means exceeding 10 million album sales) on the same day?

Answer: "1984" and "Van Halen"

It's kind of funny considering that "Van Halen" had no hit singles on the album. You would think that an album with hit singles on it would go diamond, say "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge"? "1984" had four hit singles. "Jump' was the Billboard number one single and "I'll Wait" and "Panama" were put in the top 15. "Hot For Teacher" was a huge success on MTV.
4. How many official signature guitars has Eddie had from 1978 to 2006?

Answer: 3

All these guitars sound amazing. I just couldn't believe a piece of wood could make such an incredible sound. The three great guitars were: Ernie Ball Music Man Wolfgang, Peavey Wolfgang, and Charvel EVH art series. He also endorsed Kramer Guitars, but no signature series was made.
5. Who is the oldest in the band?

Answer: Alex

Alex was born in 1955, same with Mike but a few months later. Dave came after that, then Eddie is a whole year younger.
6. Where did Alex and Eddie grow up after they came to America?

Answer: Pasedena, California

Yes, they all didn't grow up together, they met when they were in their early teens. Dave moved there with his father who was a successful surgeon and Mike moved to nearby Arcadia, California. Eddie and Alex moved to Pasedena when they weren't even teenagers, from Amsterdam.
7. What was the name of Eddie and Alex's first band, that played classic rock music?

Answer: The Trojan Rubber Company

This was their first ever name. They weren't with the boys from Van Halen, they were with a bassist named Dennis Traverse. Ed handled lead vocals as well as guitar.
8. According to Alex Van Halen, who was Eddie's preferred choice of a guitarist to listen to?

Answer: Eric Clapton

According to "The Van Halen Story: The Early Days", Eddie used to listen to Eric all the time. Eddie can sit there and play anything that Eric ever did.
9. When Eddie and Alex found a new bassist (whose name was Mark Stone) and picked a name, it was already in use by a famous band. Name them.

Answer: Genesis

They didn't even know about the great Genesis. Cream, Crazy Horse and Rush were (and still are) known bands. They then scrapped the name Genesis and named themselves Mammoth.
10. Finally the final question of this quiz. According to Alex Van Halen on the DVD "The Van Halen Story: The Early Days", how did they recruit Diamond David Lee Roth?

Answer: They used rent his PA system and they got sick of paying him money so they decided to recruit him because they'd be good for each other

The PA story is true. They used to pay him ten bucks and they'd get the PA when Dave's band (Red Ball Jet) wasn't playing. Alex got sick of paying him and thought Eddie could showcase his talents more if he could focus more on guitar than singing so they recruited him.

This was the first quiz I will make on Van Halen and there will be plenty more to come.
