Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Apolitical Blues" appears on which album?

Answer: 0U812

Eddie has, in several interviews, expressed severe disappointment in the 1982 album "Diver Down". "Fair Warning", the album before "Diver Down", did not fare well commercially and Roth pressured the band to do covers in order to ensure commerical success. Eddie said he would rather bomb with his own songs than be successfull with other people's material. Since "Diver Down", "Apolitical Blues" is the only cover the band recorded and officially released after the album "Diver Down".
2. Of the following, which album had the fewest singles released in the US?

Answer: Women and Chldren First

"Diver Down" had the most singles released, at five. "Women and Children First" only had a one track released as a single, that being "And the Cradle Will Rock ...".
3. On one of the songs from "OU812", Eddie used a Fender Statocaster with lots of reverb and Sammy Hagar played additional guitar. What's the song?

Answer: Finish What Ya Started

"Finish What Ya Started" is notable among Van Halen fans for being a vast stylistic departure in terms of guitar playing from the rest of Van Halen's songs.
4. Jan Van Halen, the father of Eddie and Alex, plays clarinet on what Roth era album?

Answer: Diver Down

Jan Van Halen plays clarinet on "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)" from 1982's "Diver Down".
5. Which album features a brief instrumental officially untitled, but known as "Growth" or "Tank"?

Answer: Women and Children First

At the end of "In a Simple Rhyme", the last song on "Women and Children First", there is a 20 second instrumental known as "Growth". Michael Anthony also refered to the recording as "Tank" in an interview. Originally, Van Halen's plan was to take "Growth", develop the recording into a full song, and open their next album with the recording.

However, this plan never came to fruition, as the next album was "Fair Warning" which opened with "Mean Streets". The band never returned to "Growth".
6. Eddie recorded a brief instrumental song that he only used a synthesizer to create. The song in question was originally over thirty minutes long, and cut down to just over a minute. You can identify what song I am talking about by this information: this is the only instrumental by the band that only features synthesizers. What album does this instrumental song appear on?

Answer: 1984

The song in question is "1984", the title track to the album "1984". Eddie edited the thirty minute recording down to just a minute and sequenced the song as the opening track to "1984". Eddie originally entitled the song "Valerie Bertinelli", named after his ex-wife.
7. In 1997, Sammy Hagar released his first solo album, "Marching to Mars", since his split from Van Halen in 1996. One of the songs featured on the record Hagar had written in the early 1990s and performed live with Van Halen in concert, but the band never officially released the song. Name the song.

Answer: Amnesty is Granted

Sammy Hagar wrote "Amnesty is Granted" and performed the song live with Van Halen in concert. Meat Loaf of "Bat Out of Hell" fame recorded the song as a duet with Hagar in 1995 for his "Welcome to the Neighbourhood" album.
8. Between 1978 and 1995, Van Halen has released four guitar instrumentals on four different albums. What was the last of the guitar instrumentals released by the band from that timespan?

Answer: 316

Van Halen's first guitar instrumental is "Eruption" from "Van Halen" in 1978. Van Halen's second guitar instrumental is "Spanish Fly" from "Van Halen II" in 1979. Van Halen's third guitar instrumental is "Little Guitars" from "Diver Down" in 1982. Van Halen's fourth guitar instrumental is "316", named after March 16, which is Eddie's son's birthday. "316" appears on their 1991 album, "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge"
9. Van Halen recorded a song entitled "Last Night" for possible inclusion for the 1978 "Van Halen" album. The band did not use the song until 1982's album "Diver Down", which used the same instrumental recording but had different vocals. Name the song.

Answer: Hang 'Em High

"Last Night" dates from Van Halen's club days.
10. What was Van Halen's first album to include keyboards?

Answer: Women and Children First

The opening song to "Women and Children First", "And the Cradle Will Rock ....", features a small electric piano section, which marks the first time that instrument appeared on a Van Halen recording.
