Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did hardcore band Minor Threat's singer Ian MacKaye get riled with Slayer over their cover of "Guilty Of Being White"?

Answer: He deemed it "offensive"

Tom Araya cheekily changed the lyric to "guilty of being right", possibly to wind up politically-correct MacKaye, and managing. Slayer's tongue-in-cheek approach to accusations of white-supremacy have endlessly annoyed their detractors, and amused their fans.
2. Which U.K. punk classic did Anthrax, Bathory and Motorhead all cover?

Answer: "God Save The Queen" - Sex Pistols

Lemmy claims to have a close affinity to punk, saying Motorhead are "closer to The Damned than Black Sabbath...nothing to do with Judas Priest". Guns N' Roses did both "New Rose" and "Down On The Farm" (with Mockney accent) and Metallica did "So What?".
3. Which band didn't wear armour on stage?

Answer: Anthrax

Omen singer J.D. Kimball had a great stage presence, armour or not. Carnivore's armour was somewhat futuristic and very D.I.Y.. Anthrax never wore it, although Neil Turbin might have liked to, bearing in mind that his image was allegedly a problem for the band.
4. Which band (arguably) gained notoriety due to one-man-band Burzum's Varg Vikernes wearing their t-shirt during his murder trial?

Answer: Von

Von were largely forgotten until that rather morbid resurgence. They released two demos ("Satanic" and "Satanic Blood") then disbanded in 1992. Varg was arrested in a Venom shirt. He was in Dark Funeral before Burzum or Mayhem.
5. Who slammed Celtic Frost's reforming in a 2006 interview?

Answer: Tom Angelripper (Sodom)

Tom G Warrior got his revenge. When played an unidentified Sodom track, he commented "a third-rate SLAYER copy with a bad accent and embarrassing lyrics." Angelripper also slammed Venom reforming. Priestly played on "Morbid Tales" and "Cold Lake". Fenriz is a notorious Frost devotee.
6. On which punk label did crusty/grind merchants Amebix release "Arise!" before moving to Heavy Metal Records for "Monolith"?

Answer: Alternative Tentacles

Amebix stuck out like a sore thumb on Jello Biafra's punk roster. SST was started by Black Flag's Greg Ginn and deals mostly with hardcore, St. Vitus being one exception. Crass is run by anarcho-punk band Crass, and Clay was home to legends Discharge, GBH and English Dogs.
7. Who was Sepultura's "Bestial Devastation" split with?

Answer: Overdose

Ann Boleyn (Hellion) released Sepultura's album "Morbid Visions" in the US. Dorsal Atlântica were around the same time as the first thrash explosion, but got nowhere abroad, maybe due to singing in Portuguese. Wagner "Antichrist" Lamounie left Sepultura to join Sarcófago, and is now an Economics professor at a Brazilian university!
8. Who produced Anthrax's "Soldiers Of Metal" single?

Answer: Ross The Boss (Manowar et al)

Canedy is a prolific metal producer and did later work with Anthrax. Scene veteran Dan Lilker played on the track, and with umpteen other bands. Benante played on one track "Soldiers..", but not the other, "Howling Furies", which featured Greg D'Angelo.
9. Which band didn't feature on the soundtrack to 1986 film, "River's Edge"?

Answer: Holy Terror

The dark, murder-drama starred Keanu Reeves and Dennis Hopper. Metal Blade released the soundtrack, which also featured hardcore band The Wipers. Hugely underrated Holy Terror were still a fledgeling outfit in 1986, but released the brilliant "Terror And Submission" a year later, and "Mind Wars" in 1988.
10. Which German band recorded an ode to Birmingham legends called "Black Sabbath" on their eponymous debut album in 1987?

Answer: Mekong Delta

Weirdoes Mekong Delta were touted as a "supergroup" at the time. They were actually "Aaarrg! Records" owner and members of Living Death moonlighting. They are connected to both Rage and Stratovarious through various members, most notably Jörg Michael, who has played with everybody.
11. What's the name of the instrumental on Détente's debut album "Recognize No Authority"?

Answer: "Catalepsy"

"The Hellion" is by Judas Priest, "March Of The Crabs" by Anvil, and "Transylvania" by Iron Maiden. Hellion vocalist Ann Boleyn joined Detente for a short period in 2008. One of the band's most striking features was Dawn Crosby's voice, but the instrumental works too.
12. Under what name, taken from a classic of English literature, was Crimson Glory originally known?

Answer: Beowulf

The author of "Beowulf" is unknown, but it's very metal in its themes. "Macbeth" was written by Shakespeare, "The Shadow Line" by Conrad and "Paradise Lost" by Milton. There have been lots of metal bands called Macbeth, and one very successful Paradise Lost. Never heard of a Shadow Line.
13. Which band didn't veteran Algy Ward play with?

Answer: Venom

He formed Tank in 1980 after leaving The Damned. He produced Warfare and played some guitar for them. He never played in Venom, but was in a band called Warhead, namesake of the Venom classic single.
14. Where were Spanish-speaking heavy metal band Baron Rojo formed in 1980?

Answer: Madrid, Spain

Drummer Hermes Calabria was born in Montevideo. They recorded a couple of classic albums in London, and played the Reading Festival with Iron Maiden, Y&T and Twisted Sister in 1983. In Europe they played with Motorhead, Mercyful Fate, and Metallica even opened for them.
15. Which Mercyful Fate track got them into the P.M.R.C. "Filthy Fifteen" chart in eleventh place?

Answer: "Into The Coven"

They were beaten by W.A.S.P., Def Leppard, Madonna and Prince (who was number one)amongst others. They beat Venom and Black Sabbath, and were the highest-charters to be berated for lyrics dealing with "the occult". Most artists were chastised for singing about sex and violence.
