Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This quiz will start from to beginning, to end chronologically. Arguably, the first death in Heavy Metal was when on September 17th, 1970, this singer/guitarist took nine sleeping pills after a concert, choked on his vomit, was found senseless in his German hotel by his girlfriend, and died the next morning.

Answer: James Marshall Hendrix

Rock/Heavy Metal legend Jimi Hendrix was born with the name Johnny Marshall (Allen) Hendrix. It's debatable whether Jimi Hendrix was an artist in the Heavy Metal realm, but his work was similar to the genre and influenced many bands that followed.
2. One time a guitarist for Quiet Riot, and later guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads' death on March 19th, 1982, shook the Heavy Metal realm. How did he die?

Answer: airplane crash

Acclaimed by critics as of the best electric guitarists of his time, Randy Rhoads died while Ozzy Osbourne was touring in Florida. One of the men traveling with them commandeered a small airplane in a nearby barn, and with Rhoads, flew the airplane around the fields that the airplane was needed to tend. The pilot lost control of the airplane and flew into a barn killing them both.
3. Metallica's first bassist, Cliff Burton, died on September 27th, 1987 in a bus accident in Sweden. True or False?

Answer: False

The correct year that Burton died was 1986. Cliff died on tour with Metallica in Sweden. In the morning the band were in their tour bus on the road between one show and another. The band was sleeping when the driver lost control of the vehicle on the slick Swedish roads.

The bus teetered over, throwing Cliff out, rolling on top of him, and crushing him. Burton was acclaimed by critics as one of the best bassists of his time. After his death, Metallica recruited Jason Newsted from Arizona's Thrash Metal band Flotsam & Jetsam, and Newsted stayed with Metallica until the year 2000.
4. Before their release of "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas", Mayhem's lead vocalist Per Ohlin (going under the pseudonym 'Dead') committed suicide. What was the date?

Answer: Spring of 1991

April 8th 1991, Per Ohlin killed himself with a shotgun. Rumor is that the shotgun and ammunition that Ohlin used was given to Euronymous by Varg in the days when the pair of them were friends. Euronymous found him and it's rumored that he took pictures of Ohlin's dead body for their "Dawn Of Black Hearts" album, there are rumors of cannibalism following the suicide of Ohlin. With Ohlin's suicide, Attila Csihar took over lyrical duties and there he remains to this day. Ohlin's suicide marked the beginning of violence in the Black Metal realm and Mayhem became heavily involved with a closely knit clan of Black Metal artists known at the time as the Inner Circle.

The Inner Circle claimed responsibility for many of the church burnings, murders and other crimes in Norway at the time.

Other bands that were involved with the Inner Circle were Darkthrone, Emperor, Burzum and most likely a few more.
5. On the 10th of August 1993, Mayhem's guitarist Oystein Aarseth (more commonly known as Euronymous), was stabbed about 25 times around the head, back and neck, dying in his own apartment. Who was Euronymous' infamous murderer? Hint: I'm looking for his name given at birth.

Answer: Kristian Vikernes

Varg Kvisling Larsson Vikernes, born Kristian Vikernes and commonly known as Varg Vikernes in person and Count Grishnackh on Burzum's releases, was Oystein Aarseth's murderer. Prior to the killing, Vikernes was at first Aarseth's friend and then grew suspicious of him when Varg grew to know him better and began to feel that Aarseth was not into the ideology of the Black Metal scene; hence not being true to the scene. Aarseth grew wary of the Count as his nature toward Aarseth grew more violent. Rumors then came to Vikernes that Aarseth was going to hire somebody to kill him. On the night of August the 13th, 1993, Count Grishnackh and Snorre Ruch, guitarist from Thorns, traveled to Oslo, Norway to talk to Euronymous about a record deal. Euronymous let Vikerves inside his apartment, leaving Ruch on the landing outside of the apartment complex.

A fight between the Count and Aarseth broke out and Varg got to a weapon (a knife) before Aarseth did, and then murdered Aarseth. Following the murder, Vikernes and Snorre fled back to their homes in Bergen, throwing the bloodied knife in a lake halfway to Bergen.

A few days later they were arrested (they both left many fingerprints at the scene, and Varg left a copy of the record deal on Euronymous' coffee table) and two months later the pair were imprisoned. Snorre for 8 years, as an accomplice to murder, and Vikernes, for the maximum of 22 years.
6. Two years after this band released their album "Chameleon", drummer Ingo Swichtenberg committed suicide on March 8th, 1995. Which band is it that I'm referring to?

Answer: Helloween

His schizophrenia, the failed attempts he made to play in another band, the stress he was getting from the past situation of Helloween, and his worries about the future of the band when Kai Hansen (Helloween's first singer) left, led him to commit suicide.
7. Chuck Shuldiner was fighting a brainstem tumor for years when it finally took his life on December the 13th, 2001. He was with the Death Metal band, appropriately named Death, at the time he died. Which position in the band did he hold?

Answer: guitarist and vocalist

Vocalist and guitarist Chuck Shuldiner was with Death since 1983 (then the band was called Mantus). Chuck's side project in 1996 led him into creation of a more melodic band, Control Denied, but then he returned to Death for their "Sound Of Perseverance" album, bringing with him Shannon Hamm and Richard Christy from Control Denied. Chuck was diagnosed with the tumor in 1999 and battled it for two more years until death claimed him in the middle of December 2001.
8. This man was a drummer for Ozzy Osbourne. He died on March 27th, 2002, from cancer. Who is he?

Answer: Randy Castillo

The other three men were also drummers for Ozzy Osbourne. Deen Castronovo has also drummed for Geezer Butler's band, Geezer. Tommy Aldridge was also in Whitesnake and Ted Nugent. Lee Kerslake played for Ozzy, and Uriah Heep.
9. Drowning Pool were touring on Ozzfest in 2002 when their singer, Dave Williams, was found dead in their tour bus on August the 14th. How did he die?

Answer: heart disease

Dave Williams' cause of death was a mystery until an autopsy revealed his heart disease. Since their album, "Desenitized", Drowning Pool have Jason 'Gong' Jones doing vocal duties for them.
10. December 7th, 2004, a murder took place in Alrosa Villa, Colombus Ohio, where Pantera founder, and at the time, Damageplan guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was shot about five times at point blank range. Who was his murderer?

Answer: Nathan Gale

Rumored to be infuriated with the breakup of Pantera, Nathan Gale broke into Alrosa Villa through the backdoor, stole on stage and shot Abbott in the head, and then allegedly shot Vinnie Abbot, Darrell's brother (and drummer for both Damageplan and Pantera), in the hand.

The club bouncer followed Gale from backstage and Gale shot and killed him too. Following the murder of the bouncer, Gale fired into the crowd killing two more, wounding three, one of the slain crowd being Nathan Bray. Police later found him backstage holding a hostage. Policeman James Niggemeyer fired a deadly shot, killing Gale and saving the hostage from potential death.
