Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The late great Warren Zevon sang about a goon named Buddy. It was released as "The Hockey Song". What is its more popular title?

Answer: Hit Somebody

This song always makes me a little sad - hockey is not about fighting. But it is a great song and my daughter listens to it on the way to most of her games.
2. What Guns 'n' Roses song is ubiquitous at the start of many hockey games? It might be played before or after the national anthem.

Answer: Welcome to the Jungle

Maybe it is a New England thing, but I hear this at the Monarchs, at the Bruins and at college games.
3. What Leadbelly classic, as performed by Ram Jam, has been banned at college hockey games?

Answer: Black Betty

I have to admit, I just don't understand why this was banned; maybe I'm just too old. The Leadbelly original is a great piece of blues and the Ram Jam cover is fun.
4. Another favorite singer, gone far too soon, is Stan Rogers. Stan sang songs about being Canadian. A good friend introduced me to this gem I had missed. Which Stan Rogers song is about a hockey player and coach?

Answer: Flying

This song really makes me smile, even if it is a bit sadly. I see so many kids dreaming about a chance at the NHL and know that only a few of them will make it to Juniors let alone the pros.

And take a listen to his other songs. The incorrect answers are all Stan Rogers songs that sort fit a hockey theme
5. This is more of a kids hockey group, though they do play live at rinks. You'll find their name someplace at the rink.

Answer: The Zambonis

Another hockey friend introduced me to the joys of The Zambonis. They sing about a "Hockey Monkey", their "Hockey Mom" and "Breakaways". And of course, they have a song about driving the Zamboni.
6. Time for your chance to be on the Jumbotron. What 80's disco hit is playing?

Answer: Y.M.C.A.

I remember when the Village People were raising eyebrows and disco was was first in the clubs. Watching all the little kids forming the letters along with their Moms (why not the dads too) makes me laugh. Then again, I'll stand up and dance with kids and the other Moms.

(the rest of the songs are from Saturday Night Fever, the quintessential disco movie)
7. I've never heard this quirky song by Opus outside the rink. I'll give you a hint "All together now Nanananana". Which song is it?

Answer: Live is Life

Another Jumbotron special, this is very catchy and very nearly an earworm. Good pump up the crowd music.
8. John Ondrasik took his stage name from a penalty call. Which one?

Answer: Five For Fighting

And he seems like such a peaceable guy too.

All of these are real penalty calls.
9. Time for another classic to get you up and dancing. And on the JumboTron?

Answer: Cotton Eye Joe

I first heard Cotton Eye Joe while at public skate, but thought it was cute and oddly familiar. I've seen it danced to at weddings and Girl Scout gatherings. Why it is intermission music at hockey games escapes me, but it is fun.
10. For many years, the Boston Bruins used this amped up version of a classic ballet piece as their theme music. Name it?

Answer: Nut Rocker

All four choices are adapted from classical pieces, but only "Nut Rocker", based on Tschaikovsky's "Nutcracker", makes me think of hockey, the Boston Bruins and Bobby Orr.
11. For the TV fans, which show had its theme music replaced in 2008 after a licensing dispute?

Answer: Hockey Night in Canada

Whenever we can, we watch the "Hockey Night In Canada" feed. There has been much outcry over the show losing its theme song, titled appropriately enough "The Hockey Theme".

Don Cherry, former Bruins coach, is an announcer on "Hockey Night in Canada". He wears the most outrageous jackets and ties.
12. What pop ballad about breaking up is used to taunt the visiting team, especially if they lost?

Answer: Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Good Bye

Not the best sportsmanship, but I admit to humming this ditty from Steam after some games. The "Baha Men" and "Who Let the Dogs Out" are also making the rounds, but usually after a scrum for the puck.
13. The Arrogant Worms are a Canadian group that has a number of humorous songs including one about hockey. What is its name?

Answer: Me Like Hockey

The song is not for the younger set, but my 16 year old thinks it is funny and so do I.
14. Kathleen Edwards is another favorite Canadian singer songwriter. She has a song with a hockey theme. She is playing defense in which song?

Answer: Hockey Skates

I don't think you'll be hearing this one at the rink anytime soon, but I love the lyrics anyway.
15. What is another heavy metal anthem that gets too much play at the hockey rink?

Answer: Enter Sandman

I never knew what the intro to this was until my goalie son started learning "Enter Sandman" on his electric guitar. I still don't like it either.
Unlike "Welcome to the Jungle", nothing about this piece speaks to me of hockey.
