Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song starts with the lines: "When I was young I never needed anyone And makin' love was just for fun Those days are gone"?

Answer: All by Myself

"All by Myself" was written by Eric Carmen and first performed in 1975. A legal agreement was made to share the royalty fees with the estate of the composer Sergei Rachmaninoff as the verse is based on the second movement of his second Piano Concerto.

It was also a hit single by Celine Dion in 1996 and has featured in albums by many other artists.
2. Which song, written by Neil Sedaka and Phil Cody, and released by Andy Williams and later by the Carpenters, refers to a game of cards played by one person?

Answer: Solitaire

The song starts with the lines:

"There was a man, a lonely man"

Neil Sedaka used it as the title track for his 1972 album. Andy Williams reached number four with it in the UK, the last top five UK single of his career.
3. Which singer wrote and performed the song "Only the Lonely (Know the Way I Feel)" in 1960? He later became a member of the Traveling Wilburys, before his early death in 1988 at the age of 52.

Answer: Roy Orbison

Traveling Wilburys consisted of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. They produced two studio albums, strangely titled "Traveling Wilbury's Vol 1" released in 1988 and "Traveling Wilbury's Vol 3", released in 1990.

Initially the band members pretended to be unknowns, using pseudonyms for the first album credits but were soon recognised and had to admit the truth.
4. What song was the UK Christmas Number One in 1974? The band also had a hit with "Tiger Feet".

Answer: Lonely This Christmas

The song was performed by the glam rock band, Mud, with lead vocalist Les Gray. Appearing on the UK "Top of the Pops" show, the guitarist Rob Davis was covered in tinsel and Les Gray sang the song to a ventriloquist's dummy. It is still regularly played on the radio during the Christmas season.
5. What song did Andrew Gold write and record that included the lines "When they said he was an only son, He thought he was the only one"?

Answer: Lonely Boy

From the album "What's Wrong with this Picture", and released as a single in 1977.

Some think the song is autobiographical but Gold denies this, despite several true facts in the lyrics. It was his biggest single success in the US, reaching number seven. In the UK, it reached number eleven. His highest single in the UK was "Never Let Her Slip Away" which reached number five in 1978.
6. Who, according to the Beatles song, "died in the church and was buried along with her name. Nobody came. Father Mckenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave. No one was saved"?

Answer: Eleanor Rigby

The other names are also in Beatles titles:
"Hey Jude" was a number one in both the US and UK in 1968.
"Dear Prudence" was a track from the "White Album", written for Prudence Farrow, the sister of Mia Farrow.
"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" from "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album, which was successfully covered by Elton John.
7. According to Petula Clark, "When you're alone and life is making you lonely. You can always go" where?

Answer: Downtown

Released in the UK in November 1964, "Downtown" only reached number two, but reached number one in the US in January 1965, the first song by a UK female artist since Vera Lynn to do so.
8. Which Elvis song has a live version in which Elvis can't stop laughing, despite the sad nature of the song?

Answer: Are You Lonesome Tonight

Originally a big hit for Elvis in 1960, it is the version recorded "Live in Las Vegas" that has become well-known. In this, he changes some of the lyrics and has a laughing fit.
9. "Alone Again (Naturally)" was a major UK and US hit for which singer-songwriter?

Answer: Gilbert O'Sullivan

It reached Number One in the US in 1972. He also wrote and performed "Clair", about the love of an uncle for his young niece, which ends with her giggling.
10. Which musical does the song "The Lonely Goatherd" appear in, although in different scenes in the original stage version and the film?

Answer: The Sound of Music

The song includes yodelling.
In the film it is part of the puppet show put on by the children.
