Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Written by Civilla Martin, this popular hymn is based on Matthew 10:29-31 and includes the phrase "...and I know He watches me".

Answer: His Eye Is On The Sparrow

When Civilla saw the steadfast faith of an ill friend who was confined to bed, she was inspired to write this hymn.
2. Ludwig van Beethoven wrote the music and Henry van Dyke the lyrics. What hymn tied these two "van" men together?

Answer: Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

As Henry surveyed all the majesty and beauty in the Berkshire Mountains, he was moved to pen the lyrics about all the joys in life. We have the mountains, the valleys, the flowers, sunshine and so much else to find joy in, but, especially the Grace of God and His forgiveness.
3. "What a fellowship, what a joy divine..." is the beginning of this hymn co-authored by Anthony J. Showalter and Elisha A. Hoffman.

Mr. Showalter based his lyrics on Deuteronomy 33:27, but needed some assistance to finish and so he turned to Mr. Hoffman who had written over 2,000 gospel hymns.
4. Being very active in the Salvation Army and an ordained evangelist for the Methodist Episcopal Church, George Bernard wrote this popular hymn as he contemplated the cross of Christ.

Answer: The Old Rugged Cross

As he studied further about the cross, George said, "I saw the Christ of the Cross as if I were seeing John 3:16 leave the printed page, take form and act out the meaning of redemption." It was by this experience and others in his life that he came to pen this hymn.
5. "There's a land that is fairer than day..." begins this hymn written in 1868 by Sanford F. Bennett.

Answer: Sweet By-and-By

Joseph P. Webster, who wrote the music, inadvertently gave his friend Sanford the idea for this hymn. Mr. Webster, a musician, was of a sensitive nature and during a bout of depression, Sanford asked Joseph what was the matter. "It's no matter," Joseph replied, "it will be all right by and by." And a popular hymn was born.
6. Known as the "Good Samaritan of Port Hope", Joseph Scriven originally wrote this hymn as a poem of encouragement to his mother.

Answer: What a Friend We Have in Jesus

On the eve of his wedding day, Joseph's bride was found drowned. This crushed him. He left his homeland of Ireland and moved to Port Hope, Canada. He found Jesus to be his best friend and decided to give his life to be a friend and a help to others.
7. George Duffield Jr. wrote the lyrics to this hymn after witnessing the death of a friend who was mortally wounded in a corn-shelling machine accident.

Answer: Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus

Dudley Tyng was a young preacher who had just finished preaching to a group of about 5,000 young men. The following day, Dudley went out to check on his corn-shelling machine and his arm got pulled into the machine and nearly severed. As he lay mortally wounded, he begged of those around him "Sing, sing, Can you not sing." His last admonition to his friends was to "Tell the people to stand up for Jesus."
8. This well-loved hymn, hastily written by William Newell on an old envelope, begins "Years I spent in vanity and pride, knowing not my Lord was crucified, knowing not it was for me He died..."

9. With the church organ broken and in need of a hymn for a Christmas Eve service, Joseph Mohr and Franz Gruber collaborated on this simple yet beautiful hymn.

Answer: Silent Night

It was finished just in time for the service and accompanied by a guitar.
10. Orphaned at the age of six, James Montgomery later came to the Lord and wrote the poem that we now know as a popular Christmas-time hymn that invites us to "Come and worship, Come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King."

Answer: Angels, from the Realms of Glory

The first verse calls the angels to go to the whole world with the news of Jesus' birth. And this is true for all believers, especially during the Christmas season we should tell others the story of Messiah's birth. Hope you have enjoyed my second installment of selections from our church hymnal. God bless!
