Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1987, a year after the band released the first Hagar album "5150", Sammy recorded a solo album. Eddie played on bass on this album. Hagar, in order to promote the album, had a contest in which one of his fans would be able to name his new album. What was the lady's name, who won?

Answer: Kim Musgrove

Kim Musgrove won Hagar's "Name My Album" contest of 1987. As a prize, Kim got to tour the band's recording studio, 5150, and hear partially completed tracks from the upcoming "OU812".
2. What famous rock icon did Sammy Hagar have as a next door neighbor during the late 1980s and early 1990s?

Answer: Jerry Garcia

On the 1995 tour, Hagar was going to replace his solo song "Eagles Fly" with "Give to Live". Then Jerry Garcia died, and so Hagar would play "Eagles Fly" as a tribute to Garcia. He said that though Garcia and himself weren't real close, whenever they saw each other they would always talk.
3. According to the Gene Simmons book "Kisstory", what song did Eddie and Alex help Kiss record a demo for?

Answer: Christine Sixteen

The four songs were from Kiss's fifth album, "Love Gun". "Plaster Castors" is a tribute to groupies, "Then She Kissed Me" is a rather bizarre recording of the Phil Spector song "Then he Kissed Me", and "Love Gun" is of course the title cut to the 1977 record. Supposedly in the same book Simmons says Eddie almost joined Kiss in the early 1980s.
4. In order for Hagar to join Van Halen, Warner Brothers had to strike a deal with Hagar's label Geffin. How many records were left on Geffen's contact that Hagar still had yet to record when Hagar joined Van Halen?

Answer: Three

Warner Brothers talked Geffin down from three albums to one, the 1987 "I Never Said Goodbye", along with a percentage of the profits from "5150".
5. In 1985, "Back to the Future" became a huge hit. There is a scene where Michael J. Fox plays a tape that has "Edward Van Halen" written on it. The song on the cassette was an untitled song that Eddie wrote for a movie. What was the movie?

Answer: The Wild Life

In the film, Michael J. Fox puts a tape into a cassette player, turns the music up as loud as he can, places the headphones on his father's head, and scares his father into pursuing his mother. It is unknown when the song was written for "The Wild Life".
6. What was the highest charting position of the band's 1995 single "Can't Stop Loving You" on the UK Singles Chart?

Answer: 33

The song is a direct homage to Ray Charles and his song "I Can't Stop Loving You". The single did quite well stateside, peaking at number two on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks.
7. The band brought in an additional musician to provide backup vocals on three songs from their "Best of Both Worlds" album. What is that musician's last name?

Answer: Lukather

Eddie brought in Steve Lukather, formerly of the band Toto, to provide backup vocals on the new songs. Like Jimmy Page in the 1960s, during the 1970s and 1980s Lukather was a major session musician, playing with hundreds of artists and appearing on over a thousand records.

In 1989, he released the album "Lukather", which Eddie Van Halen participated in the making of. He also played on "Beat It" with Eddie. In 2004, Van Halen released a double-disk compilation entitled "Best of Both Worlds". Like the 1996 comp "Best of Van Halen - Vol I", this album featured new songs, this time with Sammy Hagar.

The band brought in an additional musician to provide backup vocals on the three new songs.
8. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album famously includes a solo by Eddie Van Halen on the song "Beat It". When Michael Jackson's camp contacted Eddie, originally he thought it was a prank call but finally was convinced that Jackson wanted him to provide a guitar solo. Who originally telephoned Eddie Van Halen inviting him to play on "Beat It"?

Answer: Quincy Jones

Quincy Jones, the producer of "Thriller", made the call. Eddie played the solo free of charge. Steve Lukather also played on the song "Beat It" and the album "Thriller".
9. Of the four albums released with Sammy Hagar, how many went to number one on the Billboard Top 200 charts?

Answer: 4

With Roth, Van Halen has two albums certified diamond, meaning they have sold over ten million copies (this is "Van Halen" and "1984"). However, only with Hagar did the band begin having number one albums. All four of Hagar's albums with Van Halen went to number one.
10. What is the last name of Van Halen's third lead singer?

Answer: Malloy

Mitch Malloy was only Van Halen's lead singer for a few months in 1996 and recorded a handful of demos with the band However, after David Lee Roth appeared with the band in the 1996 MTV awards show, Malloy decided to call off the deal.
